Abstract

This article examines the commodification of hybrid performing arts in Bali tourism, especially the “Bali Agung - The Legend of Balinese Goddesses” performed regularly at Bali Safari and Marine Park, Gianyar. Data were collected by observation techniques, interviews, and literature review, then discussed with commodity theory and cultural tourism ideology. The study shos that hybridity in this performance is evident from the blended of cultural elements of Bali, China, and Western technology. Hybrid tourism performing arts produced can be communal and institutional in ownership. The hybrid tourism performing art is communal because it is created without copyright so it belongs to the people of Bali, while the hybrid performing arts is institutional because it is created with copyright so that ownership and pro t is only enjoyed by the industry that ‘recreated dan performed’ it. Although di erent, communal and institutional hybrid tourism performing arts have been able to become arts that give new color to the rich variety of Balinese art and culture.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper discusses the potential of marine tourism in Bali and its contribution toward the development of sustainable tourism. While marine and cultural tourism form two distinct categories, in Bali there are many cultural activities that take place on beaches, or coastal areas that become unique tourist attractions. Therefore, in this paper, I willalso introduce an expanded view of marine tourism that would include, for instance, the observation of processions and rituals on beaches. Exploring the interconnections between marine and cultural tourism may help us come upwith new strategies for the sustainability of tourism in Bali as a whole. In addition to aiming at sharing the experiences of Bali in managing and promoting its marine tourism potential, this paper also seeks feedback on better waysto manage marine tourism in order to achieve tourism sustainability for the island.

Abstract

AbstractA Western-style of theatre has developed in Bali since the turnof the twentieth century, but it has rarely attracted scholarly attention. Studies on the performing arts in Bali have mainly focused on Balinese (traditional) dance and drama. This should come as no surprise given that Balinese dance and drama have developed as a broad and inseparable part of Balinese custom and religious practice. Against this phenomena, this article traces the development of Western-style theatre in Bali through the artistic activities of the prominent playwright, performer and director, Abu Bakar. From the 1960s until the present, Abu Bakar has been an active promoter of Westernsty letheatre in Bali as well as in the main cities of Java andeven in Singapore. He has also has helped students and theatre groups around Bali to study and perform theatre. Initially, Abu Bakar established his own theatre group, Poliklinik, which hascontinued to stage performances as well as collaborating with young people or student theatre study clubs. His extensiverecord of artistic activity has been recorded in newspaper reports and reviews and these form the main source of documentation in this article. By examining qualitative data collected from newspaper archives and interviews, including with Abu Bakar, this article proposes a contemporary historyof theatre or modern drama in Bali.

Abstract

AbstractIn the last two decades there have been pessimistic views on the futureof Balinese language and literature. These views hold that the youngBalinese generation is not interested in Balinese literature anymore and isreluctant to speak their mother tongue; hence the argument is that soonthis language and literature will be extinct. Close observation, however, shows that there is much evidence to indicate that toward the end ofthe twentieth century or early twenty first century the life of Balineseliterature has been lively, making it possible to argue that this literaturehas entered a new golden era. This article examines and discusses howvigorous Balinese literature has been by showing the lively literary readingand appreciation activities, the growing number of literary writing andpublication, and the emergence of literary appreciation through electronicmass media, especially ‘kidung interaktif’ programs on radio andtelevision stations. This study also discusses the contribution of Balineseliterature to the process of knowledge production and application ofsocial and critical theories.

Abstract

Over the last ten years (2009-2018), the average number of modern Balinese literary books published reached 10.9 titles per year. This data is derived from the number of books nominated for the annual Rancage Literary Award over the last ten years. This research identifies and discusses opportunities and challenges in the development of the publication of modern Balinese literary books nowadays. The research focuses on identifying the supporting factors and challenges of the publication of modern Balinese literary books. Research methods applied in this study were library studies and limited ethnographic research through interviews, especially with stakeholders of modern Balinese literature including writers, readers and book agencies. Data were analyzed by Escarpit’s theory of sociology of literature that proposes the study of literature in the entire environment of literary creation, distribution and consumption. This study concludes that the provincial government of Bali, publishers, literary communities and authors all play an important role in overcoming challenges and taking advantage of opportunities for increasing the publication of modern Balinese literature. Keywords: modern Balinese literature, book publishing, Rancage award, literary community
