Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the range of instruments employed in the assessment of critical thinking. Critical thinking is conceptualized as a higher-order cognitive process involving the analysis, application, evaluation, and synthesis of information. The study adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, drawing on 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025 and indexed in Scopus (Q1–Q4) and SINTA (S1–S4). The articles were retrieved through database searches using Google Scholar, GARUDA, and SINTA, employing keywords such as “critical thinking instruments,” “development,” and “critical thinking assessment.” The review process comprised three stages: identification, screening, and eligibility assessment. Articles were initially screened based on their titles and abstracts, and duplicate records were subsequently removed. The analysis encompassed a wide range of critical thinking assessment instruments, including written tests (e.g., multiple-choice, essay-based, and complex true–false formats) as well as non-test instruments, such as psychometric scales, computer-based assessments, dialogic instruments, and rubric-based qualitative assessments. The findings indicate that no single instrument is capable of comprehensively capturing all dimensions of critical thinking. Rather, each instrument demonstrates particular strengths and limitations in assessing specific components, such as analysis, evaluation, and reasoning. Accordingly, the selection of assessment instruments should be carefully aligned with the research objectives, the instructional context, and the specific critical thinking indicators to be measured.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to evaluate the quality of items in retention and transfer tests related to additive and addictive substances. Using Rasch modeling, the study seeks to enhance the management of learning evaluations and improve our understanding of student abilities and question quality. Methodology: The research utilizes the Rasch Model to analyze retention and transfer test instruments on science topics involving additives and addictive substances. Conducted with Winstep software, the analysis focuses on the performance of 92 purposively sampled 8th-grade students during their first semester of junior high school. The study examines retention and transfer abilities, comprehensively evaluating the test items. Main Findings: The Winstep program analysis reveals that, according to the Rasch model, the average ± MNSQ Outfit values for both items and persons are 0.92. The Outfit ZSTD values for items and persons are -0.12 and -0.01, respectively. The instrument's reliability, measured by Cronbach's alpha, is 0.60, indicating moderate reliability. The research findings demonstrate that each item in the instrument is valid and reasonably reliable, with all 20 items deemed suitable for assessing student performance in retention and transfer tests. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study offers a detailed examination of retention and transfer test instruments' quality using the Rasch Model, providing valuable insights for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of these assessment tools. The research significantly improves educational assessments in science education, particularly in evaluating students' understanding of additives and addictive substances.

Abstract

Prospective biology teachers need to be well prepared, not only in terms of biology content but also their teaching skills, including lesson study. This study aims to developing a biology lesson study book based on scientific approach. The research method used is research and development by adopting the ADDIE model. The research instrument used was a questionnaire to measure the responses of experts, teachers and students to the quality of the book. This research also pays attention to qualitative (suggestions and comments) and quantitative data. The results showed that the book was considered feasible by experts. Teacher and student responses also showed a positive impact on the use of the book. The test results also showed an increase in learning outcomes. So, the book can be used in classroom learning.

Abstract

Meta-skills and metacognition are 21st century skills. The correlation between metacognition and meta-skills has never been studied before. Even though both have a relationship based on concept studies. Therefore, this study aims to predict the extent to which metacognition can influence meta-skills. This quantitative research is correlational research conducted on 30 undergraduate students of Biology Education, Universitas Jambi. Students' metacognition was measured using a test. Students' meta-skills were measured using a questionnaire whose scores were transformed into interval data. The results were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results of data analysis showed there is a correlation between students' metacognition and meta-skills (p = < 0.01). There is a significant regression equation [F (1. 58) = 14.28, p < 0.01] with an R2 of 0.20. Students' meta-skills can be predicted using the regression equation y = 33.63 + 0.46x. The regression coefficient (B = 0.46) indicates that an increase in metacognition score by 1 number will increase students' meta-skills score by 0.46.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a biology learning model book based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to meet the demand for effective teaching resources in biology education. The ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) was used to ensure a systematic development process. An initial survey involving 80 respondents revealed that 86.5% of respondents "strongly needed" the book, while 13.5% "needed" it, indicating a significant demand among prospective biology teachers. The book underwent a rigorous validation process, including two rounds of expert review, where the first validation yielded a score of 67 (not valid) and the second validation improved to 82 (valid). Additionally, trials were conducted in two phases: a small group trial with 6 students and a large group trial with 15 students. Results from the small group trial showed that 50% of respondents rated the book as "Good," 33% rated it as "Very Good," and 17% rated it as "Fair." In the large group trial, 60% of respondents rated the book as "Good," while 40% rated it as "Very Good." The book effectively integrates HOTS principles, which have been shown to enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These findings affirm that this guidebook not only addresses the urgent need in biology education but also has significant potential to improve educational quality by providing a structured approach to implementing HOTS in the classroom.

Abstract

Biology learning in Indonesia is still predominantly teacher-centered, limiting students’ opportunities to actively develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and other 21st-century competencies. Students often receive information passively, resulting in low engagement and limited ability to apply concepts in real-life contexts. Therefore, innovative learning models are needed to support more meaningful and student-centered learning. This study aims to review the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in Biology education and analyze its contribution to the development of students’ 21st-century skills. The study employed a literature review method by analyzing 20 research articles published between 2022 and 2026. Articles were obtained through Google Scholar searches and selected based on relevance to Biology education, focus on PjBL implementation, and open-access availability. Data collection involved identification, screening, selection, and documentation of related studies, while data analysis used a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings indicate that PjBL effectively improves students’ cognitive achievement, conceptual understanding, scientific literacy, creativity, and critical thinking skills. In addition, PjBL enhances collaboration, communication, problem-solving abilities, learning motivation, and life skills through contextual and authentic project activities. Students become more actively involved in investigating real-world problems, designing solutions, and producing meaningful learning outputs. Furthermore, the integration of STEM approaches, digital media, blended learning, and Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) strengthens the effectiveness of PjBL in Biology learning. Overall, PjBL is highly relevant for supporting the Merdeka Curriculum and improving the quality of Biology education in developing 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

Literasi informasi merupakan kemampuan penting yang harus dimiliki oleh peserta didik di tengah pesatnya perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi. Peserta didik harus tahu apa yang mereka butuhkan dari berbagai macam informasi dan banyaknya sumber informasi. Peserta didik juga diharapkan mampu mencari, menilai, dan menggunakan informasi dengan baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji serta menganalisis hasil-hasil penelitian terdahulu terkait kemampuan literasi informasi peserta didik sekolah menengah. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah literature review dengan menganalisis dan mengkaji sepuluh artikel ilmiah yang relevan dan terbit pada rentang tahun 2017-2025, yang diperoleh dari jurnal ilmiah nasional bereputasi. Data penelitian disajikan dalam bentuk tabel dengan teknik analisis data yaitu deskriptif. Analisis data dilakukan dengan teknik analisis isi yaitu menelaah tujuan penelitian, metode, indikator literasi informasi, serta temuan utama dari setiap artikel. Hasil analisis kajian literature review yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan literasi informasi peserta didik di sekolah menengah umumnya berada pada kategori sedang hingga baik, terutama pada aspek identifikasikebutuhan dan akses informasi. Namun, masih perlu penguatan pada aspek evaluasi dan pemanfaatan informasi. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulakan bahwa pengembangan literasi informasi peserta didik di sekolah menengah perlu meningkatkan strategi pembelajaran pada proses pembelajaran guna meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran di tingkat sekolah menengah

Abstract

Polidaktili merupakan kondisi bawaan ketika seseorang memiliki jumlah jari tangan atau jari kaki lebih dari lima akibat gangguan pembentukan atau diferensiasi jaringan pada masa perkembangan embrio. Polidaktili diklasifikasikan menjadi tiga jenis utama, yaitu preaksial, postaksial, dan sentral. Kasus polidaktili juga terjadi di Jambi, namun data tentang kasus polidaktili dan pola pewarisannya masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan pola pewarisan polidaktili pada beberapa kasus di wilayah Jambi. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kasus melalui wawancara, dokumentasi, dan observasi langsung terhadap individu yang mengalami polidaktili. Data dianalisis untuk menentukan pola pewarisan berdasarkan kemunculannya pada generasi berikutnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ditemukan tipe polidaktili preaksial dan postaksial. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa alel penyebab polidaktili dapat diwariskan secara de novo dan baru muncul pada generasi tertentu.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential 21st-century skill in science and biology education. However, students’ critical thinking skills are often still relatively low due to learning processes that are less focused on investigation and active problem-solving. Inquiry learning has been widely implemented as an approach that encourages students to ac-tively construct knowledge and develop higher-order thinking skills. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the inquiry learning model on students’ critical thinking skills through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles were collected from Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish application, covering publications from 2022 to 2026. A total of 20 articles that met the inclusion cri-teria were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the inquiry learning model had a positive impact on students’ critical thinking skills at elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels. The most widely used form was guided inquiry, which effec-tively improved critical thinking through observation, investigation, experimentation, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. In addition, the model enhanced science process skills, collaboration, and student engagement in learning.

Abstract

Literasi media merupakan kompetensi penting bagi siswa di era digital. Problem Based Learning (PBL) dipandang sebagai pendekatan pembelajaran yang relevan untuk mengembangkan kemampuan literasi media siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efektivitas PBL dalam meningkatkan literasi media siswa melalui studi literatur. Metode yang digunakan adalah literature review terhadap 15 artikel jurnal nasional terakreditasi yang dipublikasikan dalam rentang tahun 2020–2025. Artikel dipilih berdasarkan kriteria relevansi dengan topik literasi media dan PBL serta memuat hasil penelitian empiris, dan ditelusuri melalui basis data Google Scholar. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menelaah model pembelajaran, jenis media yang digunakan, serta hasil penerapan PBL. Hasil kajian menunjukkan adanya pola temuan yang konsisten bahwa penerapan PBL yang dipadukan dengan berbagai media pembelajaran seperti media pansi, media pohon, modul digital, magic box, konten digital, media audiovisual, aplikasi pembelajaran, media matematika, puzzle, video, media sosial, YouTube, serta game pembelajaran cenderung meningkatkan kemampuan literasi media siswa. PBL mendorong keterlibatan aktif siswa dalam pemecahan masalah kontekstual, yang berdampak pada peningkatan kemampuan analisis, evaluasi, dan pemanfaatan konten media secara kritis. Simpulan penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa PBL merupakan model pembelajaran yang efektif dan adaptif dalam meningkatkan literasi media siswa di era digital, serta memiliki potensi luas untuk diterapkan dalam berbagai konteks pembelajaran
