Abstract

Volcanic soil is a part of interest for physical, chemical, and morphology studies of soil derived from volcanic ash, which is known to be fertile and is one of the most productive soils in the world. They are also known to have a high environmental carrying capacity, as evidenced by the dense population in the area around the volcano. The soil contains many minerals, one of which is magnetic minerals. However, there is no document so far that records the value of the magnetic susceptibility of volcanic soil on the surface of Mount Singgalang. This study aims to determine the abundance of magnetic minerals based on their magnetic susceptibility values. To achieve this goal, the rock magnetism method is applied with the Bartington magnetic susceptibility meter type MS2B sensor instrument. Magnetic susceptibility values can be used as initial characteristics to understand past volcanic processes and explain environmental changes. This method is very effective, inexpensive, sensitive, fast, and non-destructive. The results showed that the value of the magnetic susceptibility of volcanic soils varied with a value range of 93.3 - 352.5 (x10−8 m3/kg). Based on this value, it is assumed that the magnetic mineral properties are antiferromagnetic. The average frequency dependent susceptibility (χfd) (%) ranges from 0.831 - 2.090 %, indicating that the measured volcanic soil contains almost no superparamagnetic grains and is generally dominated by multi-domain grains.

Abstract

Clay in West Sumatra has been developed as an industrial material, one of which is a natural dye for batik. The use of clay as a natural dye was previously known to have magnetic minerals contained in clay so as to produce color and resistance to fabrics. Currently, no one has investigated the types of magnetic minerals found in clay and their effect on color resistance in batik cloth, so this study aims to determine the types of magnetic minerals in clay and their effect on color resistance in batik cloth. Clay samples were taken from two areas in West Sumatra, namely Pesisir Selatan and Sijunjung. Samples were characterized from the extraction of clay using X-Ray Diffraction, where measurements were taken before and after the dyeing process on the fabric. The results showed that the types of magnetic minerals found in the clay before and after dyeing the fabric were Maghemite. In addition, the non-magnetic mineral found in clay is Quartz. The color resistance test on the CL-SPPS-210314-2 fabric sample did not change color, on the contrary, the CL-PSBSJJ-210421 fabric sample experienced quite a change from the original color of the fabric or before washing.

Abstract

Understanding the concept is very important in learning physics. Many studies show that students' understanding of physics concepts is at a low level, including Newton's law of motion in class X SMA. While misconceptions in students are at a high level. Misconceptions can occur because the concepts embedded in students are not the same as expert opinions. The aims of this study were; (1) to determine students' conceptual understanding of Newton's laws of motion, (2) to determine student attitudes towards learning physics and (3) to determine the correlation between students' understanding of physics concepts in Newton's law of motion and students' attitudes towards study physics. The sample or subject in this study were 61 grade X students who had studied Newton's laws of motion. Research data collection was carried out in two ways, namely tests and questionnaires. The instrument for collecting data on understanding Newton's law concepts is the diagnostic four-tier test Newton’s law. The instrument to determine students' attitudes towards learning physics is a questionnaire adopted and then modified from the CLASS (Colorado Learning Attitude about Science Survey). The test data were analyzed statistically and the questionnaire descriptively. The results showed that the students' understanding of Newton's law concepts was very low. The majority of students have misconceptions, especially on Newton's first, second, and third Newton law. Based on the analysis of students' attitudes, it was found that; there are still 29% students who do not like physics lessons and are not interested in increasing the time to study physics. Then, Correlation between student’s understanding of physics concept and attitude towards learning physics, the result showed that the both variable had a correlation value of 0,420. Which means that the both variable has a moderate correlation with a positive direction.
