Abstract

Land cover change is one of the major contributors to environmental degradation and can significantly alter the physical environment. These alterations in the physical environment may have substantial implications for human health. One of the notable health impacts associated with such changes is the increased incidence of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis cases are linked to the proliferation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which thrives in environments with high humidity levels. This study employs linear regression analysis to examine the influence of various types of land cover—namely, plantation areas, mixed agriculture, residential zones, and rice fields—on tuberculosis incidence. Additionally, the study incorporates Human Development Index (HDI) and economic growth rate as proxies for human development in Lampung Province. The findings, based on t-test statistical analysis, reveal that plantation land cover (P-value = 0.045) and the rate of economic growth (P-value = 0.001) have a statistically significant effect on tuberculosis incidence in the region. In contrast, other land use types and the Human Development Index do not exhibit a significant relationship with the number of tuberculosis cases. Based on these results, it is recommended that the government formulate credible and evidence-based regulations concerning future land use planning.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia refers to elevated blood glucose levels above the normal range. It is caused by glucose accumulation in the blood that fails to enter cells, insulin hormone dysfunction, and hereditary factors. This condition can impair organ function. Several studies have shown that Momordica charantia contains compounds that stimulate the regeneration of beta cells, thereby increasing insulin production. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ethanol extract from M. charantia fruit in lowering blood glucose levels and to observe any toxicity symptoms induced by the extract in mice, to assess its safety. The research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) involving six treatment groups with five replications each: K(-) without alloxan or test substances, K(+) induced with alloxan and treated with glibenclamide, and P1 to P4 induced with alloxan and administered M. charantia extract at doses of 5, 50, 300, and 2000 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Observed parameters included mean body weight, blood glucose levels, toxicity symptoms (behavioral changes), organ weight, and macroscopic examination. Results indicated that the ethanol extract of M. charantia effectively reduced blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced male mice. Group P4 (2000 mg/kg BW) showed the most significant reduction (129.5 mg/dL). No significant toxicity symptoms were observed in organ weight or macroscopic structure, suggesting that the ethanol extract of M. charantia is safe for use.

Abstract

Caulerpa racemosa is one of the green macroalgae that is widely distributed in the coastal areas of Lampung Province and needs to be explored as a phytopharmaceutical ingredient because it is thought to have bioactive compounds. In this study, we also used taurine, which is known to prevent cell and tissue damage due to oxidative processes, to explore its potential as an anticancer. The initial stage of this research is phytochemical screening of 96% ethanol extract of Caulerpa racemosa and contains phenolic compounds . alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, steroids and terpenoids. The toxicity test of Caulerpa racemosa ethanol extract and taurine used the BSLT method (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test). In this study, 7 concentrations were used, namely 0 ppm (control); 62.5; 125; 250; 500; 1000; and 2000 for both Caulerpa racemosa and taurine ethanol extracts with 5 repetitions. Meanwhile, the toxicity test results showed that the LC50 value of Caulerpa racemosa ethanol extract was 194.14 ppm and 170.69 ppm for taurine, this values are between 100 ppm - 1000 ppm of Caulerpa racemosa ethanol and taurine indicate that both material have potential anticancer activity with low toxicity.

Abstract

Severe hyperglycemia symptoms can be brought on by elevated blood glucose levels. Diabetes mellitus will result if this occurs consistently over a period of years. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of breadfruit leaf extract on blood glucose reduction and the effects of alloxan on mice's weight. Data analysis using ANOVA at 5% confidence interval and LSD (Least Significant Difference) test. The research results showed that the K+ group (which was only induced by alloxan) experienced a significant decrease in blood glucose levels when breadfruit leaf extract was administered. Blood glucose level of mice was found to decrease by 61% (87.60 ± 1.07) at an effective dose of 22.4 mg/grbw/day (P3), which was almost the same as the blood glucose level of K (-) on day 0; in addition, the body weight of mice increased after a hyperglycemic episode when the ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves was administered.

Abstract

Exploration of microorganisms containing secondary metabolite compounds with antimicrobial properties, especially in marine fish pathogenic bacteria, is urgently required. This study aims to test the antibacterial effectiveness of endophytic fungal extracts from the mangrove plant Rhizopora apiculata in the Petengoran Mangrove Forest against pathogenic bacteria in marine fish such as V. alginolyticus and P. damselae spp. The endophytic fungal isolate found was a fungus from the genus Aspergillus sp after observing its morphological form macroscopically and microscopically. Ethyl acetate extract of mangrove endophytic fungi with a concentration of 500 µg/disc and 1000 µg/disc was dripped onto a 6mm paper disc and then placed on the pathogenic bacterial isolate. Measurement of the diameter of the clear zone produced around the paper disc after 24 hours concluded that the antibacterial effectiveness of the endophytic fungal extract against V. alginolyticus was 27.27% (500 µg/disc) and 32.32% (1000 µg/disc). Meanwhile, its effectiveness against P. damselae spp is 27.27% (500 µg/disc) and 34.82% (1000 µg/disc). The isolate extract from the endophytic fungus Aspergillus in this study has the potential to produce antibacterial compounds in marine fish pathogens.
