Abstract

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is influenced by excessive fat consumption. To lower blood cholesterol levels, both drug and non-drug therapy can be carried out. One plant that has the potential to lower cholesterol levels is the buni plant (Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng.). This study aims to determine the effect of buni fruit juice and the most effective juice concentration in lowering total cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic male mice. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of 5 groups, each repeated 5 times. The experimental animals were given a High Fat Diet (MDTL) containing propylthiouracil (PTU) at a dose of 1.8 mg/200g BW suspended in 2% Pure Grain Alcohol (PGA) and 10 mL/KgBW of quail egg yolk. The treatments consisted of a negative control (standard feed); a positive control (MDTL and 0.52 mg simvastatin); P1 (MDTL and 1 ml of 20% buni fruit juice); P2 (MDTL and 1 ml of 25% berry juice); and P3 (MDTL and 1 ml of 30% berry juice). Treatments P1, P2, and P3 were administered MDTL for 14 days, followed by berry juice for another 14 days. The results were total blood cholesterol levels. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test at a confidence level of α = 5%. The results showed that administration of 30% berry juice reduced total cholesterol levels in male mice with hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract

The integration of agroforestry and aquaculture systems has been increasingly explored to improve resource utilization and support sustainable food production. This study evaluates the potential of moringa (Moringa oleifera), a multifunctional agroforestry species, as a feed supplement for white snapper (Lates calcarifer). An experimental study was conducted using a completely randomized design with four dietary treatments: 0% (control), 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% moringa leaf extract supplementation, each with three replicates, over a 28-day rearing period. Growth performance, including absolute length and weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR), was measured. The results showed that fish receiving moringa-supplemented feed generally exhibited higher growth values compared to the control. The highest average weight gain was observed in the 5% treatment (9.28 g), while the highest SGR was recorded in the 2.5% treatment (4.79% day⁻¹). Survival rates in all supplemented treatments reached 100%, compared to 90% in the control group, indicating favorable culture conditions and no adverse effects of supplementation. FCR values across treatments remained above 2, suggesting relatively low feed utilization efficiency. This may be related to the carnivorous feeding characteristics of white snapper, which can limit the effective use of plant-based feed components. Water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen, remained within acceptable ranges throughout the study. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the integration of agroforestry biomass into aquaculture feed systems. The use of moringa as a locally available, renewable resource contributes to circular nutrient flows, reduces reliance on imported feed ingredients, and promotes environmentally sustainable aquaculture practices. These findings advance the development of integrated agroforestry–aquaculture systems as resilient and eco-efficient production models in tropical regions.

Abstract

In the seas of Lampung, a kind of brown macroalgae known as Padina australis is commonly seen.. Padina australis is widely used in the food industry as a gelling agent, emulsifier, thickener, stabilizer and also in the medical industry. The content of phytochemical compounds that can be developed as phytopharmaceutical agents is one of them as antioxidants. The aim of this study was to analyze the phytochemical content and potential antioxidant activity of the macroalgae Padina australis. The method used was extraction by maceration in 70% ethanol as a solvent. The phytochemical test was performed qualitatively by a color reagent test. The FTIR test was performed to analyze the functional groups of the active ingredients, while the antioxidant test used the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) method. The results obtained show that the ethanol extract of Padina australis contains chemical compounds such as saponins, steroids, tannins, alkaloids, and flavonoids. Padina australis extract shows its potential as an alternative source of natural antioxidant compounds because it is able to reduce free radicals with an IC50 value of 407.96 ppm, which is classified as very weak antioxidant activity. Further research needs to be done to obtain other concentration doses so as to get the best antioxidant activity results that can be developed clinically for health products.
