Abstract

Biology teaching plays a vital role in developing students’ critical and analytical thinking skills, as well as their problem-solving abilities. However, the implementation of innovative teaching models and the use of teaching aids in schools still face various challenges. This study aims to analyse the application of biology teaching models, the use of teaching aids, and the challenges faced by teachers at MAN 1 Medan. This study employs a qualitative approach of a descriptive nature. Data collection was carried out through structured interviews with biology teachers as the main informants, supported by documentation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, grouping, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, with validity testing using triangulation. The research findings indicate that teachers have implemented various teaching models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), inquiry-based learning and group discussions, and have consistently used question-and-answer sessions to assess pupils’ understanding. The teaching aids used include PowerPoint presentations, educational videos, visual aids such as human torsos and skeletons, and mobilebased quizzes. However, the implementation of learning has not been optimal due to limited facilities, low student engagement, differences in ability and motivation to learn, and limited learning time. Teachers have attempted to overcome these constraints through a variety of methods, the provision of motivation, and the use ofbavailable media. Therefore, improvements to facilities and the development of technology-based learning innovations are required to enhance the effectiveness of biology learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) oriented toward Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) supported by digital technology in biology learning at SMAN 17 Medan. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach with a structured interview technique involving a biology teacher as the main informant. Data were collected through interviews focusing on the implementation of PBL, the use of digital technology, the application of HOTS-based learning, and the integration of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in classroom activities. The results showed that the implementation of PBL began with presenting contextual problems related to students’ daily lives, followed by group discussions, information exploration, and presentation of solutions. The use of digital technology such as Google Classroom, PowerPoint, learning videos, and internet-based resources supported the learning process and helped students understand abstract biological concepts more effectively. The integration of HOTS was reflected in analytical questions, case-based assignments, and collaborative discussions that encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the integration of TPACK was evident from the teacher’s ability to combine content mastery, appropriate pedagogical strategies, and digital technology use. However, several challenges were found, including limited instructional time, inadequate technological facilities, and differences in students’ digital literacy skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the needs for interactive multimedia-based learning media to support Biology learning at SMA Negeri 18 Medan. Biology learning often faces challenges due to abstract and complex concepts such as genetics and physiological systems, which are difficult for students to visualize using conventional media. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with Biology teachers, utilizing an instrument that covers three main aspects: the implementation of learning models, the use of learning media, and learning constraints. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that Biology learning at SMA Negeri 18 Medan still relies heavily on printed books and static media, while the use of complex digital media remains suboptimal due to technical issues and time constraints. Students face significant difficulties in understanding microscopic and dynamic concepts, leading to uneven engagement. The findings highlight an urgent need for interactive multimedia that integrates 3D visualization, virtual laboratories, and gamification to bridge the gap between abstract concepts and concrete understanding, accommodate diverse learning styles, and increase student motivation and participation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perspectives of Biology Education students on the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in biology learning. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with 27 students of Biology Education at Universitas Negeri Medan, cohort 2023, selected using total sampling technique. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire covering aspects of understanding, experience, benefits, constraints, and the effectiveness of PBL, and then analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages. The results showed that 44.44% of respondents strongly agreed and 37.04% agreed, resulting in a total positive response of 81.48%, which falls into the very positive category. PBL is considered effective in improving students' understanding of biological concepts, critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration. However, several challenges were identified, including time constraints, lack of participation among some group members, and difficulties in understanding complex problems. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of PBL is well-received and has the potential to improve the quality of biology learning, although improvements in its implementation are still needed.
