Abstract

Ekas Bay is a semi-enclosed bay and estuary in the southern part of Lombok Island. Ekas Bay has an area of 5,312.68 hectares, although it is not very wide, this bay has its own uniqueness and is relatively protected from waves because it is located inland. In Ekas Bay itself, two river estuaries are found, namely the Awang River Estuary and the Kelongkong River Estuary. The existence of these two river estuaries has a negative impact on the condition of the waters of Ekas Bay because residue from household activities is carried away by the river current, one of which is plastic waste. The presence of microplastics on ocean coasts has a negative impact on sea water quality and the life of marine biota, microplastics cannot evaporate or degrade by themselves, microplastics will accumulate in sea water and the body parts of marine biota. This research aims to identify the type and abundance of microplastics in the Ekas Bay floating net cage area and the results obtained in water samples were that the abundance of microplastics at point A was 49.44 par/L, point B was 55.76 par/L and point C was 40.40 par /L. The abundance of microplastics in sediment samples at point A was 12.25 par/L, point B was 10.8 par/L and point C was 11.01 par/L.

Abstract

Silver pompano is a high-value fish, yet the cost of commercial feed is a major challenge for fish farmers. This study explores the addition of turmeric extract to commercial feed as a potential strategy to improve feeding efficiency and reduce production costs. Conducted at the Lombok Marine Aquaculture Center, the 50-day experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatment levels (control, 10 ml, 15 ml, and 20 ml of turmeric extract per kg feed) and three replications, totaling 12 experimental units. Parameters measured included growth performance indicators like specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein and fat retention, and water quality. Data was analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan tests to assess treatment effects. Results showed that turmeric extract significantly improved SGR, FCR, protein retention, and fat retention, although it had no significant impact on absolute weight, length, survival rate, or feeding efficiency. The optimal treatment was 20 ml/kg of turmeric extract, yielding an SGR of 4.92%, FCR of 2.48, protein retention of 18.64%, and fat retention of 22.37%, likely due to the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, and phenols.

Abstract

Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is one of the fisheries commodities in great demand because it has an attractive physique and relatively high economic value. The increasing market demand for male Betta means a method is needed to produce male offspring en masse. This research aimed to determine the effect of bitter melon (Momordica charantia) solution on the male sex ratio of Betta by immersion of larvae in different concentrations. This research used an experimental method with a completely randomized design (CRD), which included four treatments with three replications, namely control treatment, P2 treatment with a concentration of 1.5 ml/l, P3 treatment with a concentration of 3 ml/l, and P4 treatment with a concentration of 6 ml/l. The data obtained was analyzed using the ANOVA method. If the data analysis showed a significant effect, it was carried out using Duncan's advanced test. The research showed that the treatment applied had a real influence on the percentage of male Betta but did not significantly affect the survival rate. The highest sex percentage value for Betta was found in treatment P4 (6 ml/l), which was 77%.

Abstract

This study investigates microplastic contamination in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultivation systems, focusing on water, feed, and shrimp health. Microplastics, which pose significant threats to aquaculture, are often ingested by shrimp, potentially causing physiological damage and reducing product quality. The research was conducted from June to September 2024 at PT—X in North Lombok Regency. Samples of water, shrimp organs (intestines, stomach, and gills), and feed (pellets and crumbles) were analyzed for microplastic contamination. Results revealed a high presence of microplastic fragments in both shrimp and feed, with a significant reduction in microplastic particles after water filtration treatment. Specifically, the water reservoir contained 71 microplastic particles before treatment, with fragments being the most prevalent, and decreased to 8 particles post-treatment. The pelleted feed showed 102 microplastic particles, with fragments comprising 90 of them. Similarly, crumble feed contained 49 microplastic particles, predominantly fragments. The findings emphasize the significant role of microplastic pollution from the surrounding environment and the feed production process in shrimp farming. This study provides essential insights into the sources and impact of microplastics on shrimp health and the quality of aquaculture products, advocating for improved management practices and environmental awareness to mitigate contamination risks.

Abstract

Optimizing hatchery techniques for guppy (Poecilia reticulata) production is essential for improving reproductive efficiency and economic viability in small-scale ornamental aquaculture. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a simplified spawning system using sterilized aquaria (40×60×40 cm) with aeration and aquatic vegetation to create a semi-natural environment. Broodstock selection based on gonadal maturity and a male-to-female ratio of 2:4 resulted in high spawning success, with courtship behavior observed by day three. A staged feeding strategy—infusoria and egg yolk (days 1–3), Artemia nauplii (days 4–10), and Tubifex (days 11–21)—supported consistent larval growth from 0.5 cm to 1.6 cm over three weeks. Larval survival reached 91.1%, with 162 of 168 fry surviving by day 21. Stable water quality parameters (24–26°C, 7.6–7.9 mg/L dissolved oxygen, pH 6.7–7.1) were maintained through regular siphoning and water renewal. Economic analysis indicated system feasibility, with a production cost of IDR 1,369,250, revenue of IDR 1,620,000, and net profit of IDR 250,750. The benefit-cost ratio (R/C) was 1.18, the break-even point was achieved at 136.93 fry, and the payback period was 17.7 months. These findings highlight the biological and financial viability of low-cost guppy hatchery systems suitable for rural aquaculture settings. Future research should focus on scaling potential, feed alternatives, and digital monitoring to improve system sustainability and profitability.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation with Eichhornia crassipes leaf extract on the growth performance and hematological parameters of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, with moderate antioxidant activity (50.89% DPPH inhibition). Experimental treatments showed that fish receiving moderate levels of the extract had significantly higher erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, indicating improved oxygen transport and immune function. Additionally, the group with the highest absolute weight gain suggests better nutrient absorption. All treatments maintained a 100% survival rate and stable water quality, confirming the extract’s safety and environmental compatibility. These results support the use of E. crassipes as a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic growth promoters in aquaculture. Further research is recommended to investigate its long-term effects and mechanisms of action.

Abstract

Climate change poses a significant threat to the sustainability of global aquaculture, including biofloc-based aquaculture systems (BFT). While BFT improves nutrient use efficiency and reduces water consumption, energy efficiency remains a key challenge, especially in terms of energy intensity and oxygen transfer (OTE/SOTE). This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) using the PRISMA 2020 method, focusing on energy efficiency in tilapia cultivation with BFT and adaptation strategies to climate variability. Key findings emphasize the importance of aeration, design optimization, and C/N management in minimizing energy consumption without compromising production. Additionally, integrating technologies like IoT/AI for adaptive DO control shows great potential in reducing energy intensity. This research contributes a systematic framework that links energy metrics with aeration design and operational adaptation strategies, offering guidance for developing more efficient and climate-resilient BFT systems. The study also recommends implementing renewable energy and smart water quality monitoring technologies to enhance aquaculture sustainability.
