Abstract

Abstract

Biodiesel production has received considerable attention in the recent past as a renewable fuel. The production of biodiesel by conventional transesterification process employs alkali or acid catalyst and has been industrially accepted for its high conversion and reaction rates. However for alkali catalyst, there may be risk of free acid or water contamination and soap formation is likely to take place which makes the separation process difficult. Although yield is high, the acids, being corrosive, may cause damage to the equipment and the reaction rate was also observed to be low. This research focuses on empirical modeling and optimization for the biodiesel production over plasma reactor. The plasma reactor technology is more promising than the conventional catalytic processes due to the reducing reaction time and easy in product separation. © 2009 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

Bioenergy is an alternative energy that utilizes various types of organic waste that can generate electricity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fermentation time and coconut pulp concentration on the electrical characteristics of durian fruit skin, banana fruit skin, and cassava skin waste as an alternative energy source. The electrical characteristics observed were the voltage generated by fruit peel waste based on fermentation time and coconut pulp concentration. This research is a laboratory-based experimental research. The results of the study showed that: 1) the length of fermentation time affects the voltage generated by durian skin, banana skin, and cassava skin; 2) the fermentation time to produce the best voltage is the fourth day (96 hours); 3) the longer the fermentation time, the lower the voltage generated; 4) coconut pulp concentration affects the voltage generated by durian skin, banana skin, and cassava skin; 5) the ratio of 25% coconut pulp concentration and 75% raw material concentration becomes the ratio that produces the best voltage; 6) durian fruit peel waste has the highest voltage compared to banana fruit peel and cassava peel waste, both in terms of fermentation time or coconut pulp concentration. 7) cassava peel waste has a higher potential difference resistance than other skin waste

Abstract

Corrosion can also be defined as the forced destruction of metal by the surrounding medium which is usually a liquid (corrosive agent). Corrosion prevention processes can be carried out, including by coating the metal surface, cathodic protection, adding corrosion inhibitors and so on. Several types of inhibitors that have been widely used in industrial applications are synthetic chemical inhibitors. However, the compounds of inhibitors are environmentally unfriendly, toxic and expensive. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to develop an environmentally friendly alternative corrosion inhibitor or better known as a green inhibitor. This research aims to test the effectiveness of using a combination of lime (Citrus aurantifolia.), Lerak (Sapindus rarak) and jasmine flower (Jasminum nudiflorum) extracts as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor. The results obtained were inhibitors in the form of a combination which were added to the corrosive medium HCl which could reduce the rate of aluminum corrosion. This research also shows that time and concentration influence the corrosion rate. A higher concentration (200 ppm) has a greater inhibitory power than a concentration of 100 ppm. The best inhibitory power is found in 200 ppm inhibitor with a soaking time of 20 minutes

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the use of chitosan as a substitute for formalin in making wet preparations of true bony fish (Osteichthyes) and to assess the feasibility of storing them as practicum media in the Vertebrate Zoology course. Osteichthyes body size varies from 1 cm to 6 meters. The main characteristic of Osteichthyes is the presence of a skeleton consisting of native bone and a hard calcium phosphate matrix. The skin is protected by various types of scales, including ganoid, cycloid, or stenoid scales. The research method used is Experimental Research Method with descriptive approach, which includes hedonic test and shelf life test (organoleptic) through panelist participation. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was used as the specimen in this experiment with variations in chitosan concentration of 0.50, 1.50, 2.50, and 3.50%. The study included evaluation of Osteichthyes wet preparations by considering aroma and odor, texture, color, as well as monitoring storage stability for one week. The results showed that the wet preparation using chitosan concentration of 3.5% gave satisfactory results for the observation of Osteichthyes structure. In addition, the storage evaluation showed that the quality of the preparations could be well maintained over a certain period. This indicates that chitosan can be an effective alternative in making Osteichthyes wet preparations for Zoology practicum
