Abstract

Chalazion is a granulomatous inflammation with lipogranuloma or chronic non-infectious inflammation of the eyelid, in the form of a nodule formed due to inflammation and obstruction of the tarsal meibomian gland or zeis. This chalazion often occurs in all age groups, but the chalazion occur more commonly in the productive age. We report the case of a 20-year-old man with complaints of a lump on the upper eyelid, at the left and right eye for 4 months before entering the hospital. The lump is initially small but gets bigger over time, becomes red, feels painful and lumpy. This complaint has been repeated since 10 months ago. Currently the lump no longer feels painful, itchy or hot, but the lump is now permanent. On ophthalmological examination, it was found that the superior eyelid of the right eye had a nodule measuring ±5 mm and the superior eyelid of the left eye had a nodule measuring ±3mm. The diagnosis made was acute exacerbation of chalazion of right eye, then the patient was given non-medicamentosa therapy, medicamentosa, and operative treatment.

Abstract

The excessive and uncontrolled use of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria, which poses a serious threat to global health. To address this problem, alternative treatments from natural materials, such as mangrove plants, are starting to attract attention. Mangrove plants contain bioactive compounds that have antibacterial potential against various pathogenic bacteria. This study aims to review the antibacterial activity of various mangrove species in Indonesia. The method used was a literature study that included analysis of recent journals on the antibacterial activity of mangrove plants. The results showed that extracts from various mangrove species, such as Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, and Heritiera littoralis, had significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica. The zones of inhibition produced varied between 5 to 20 mm, with the ethanol extract from Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaves showing the most potent activity. In addition, the assay results showed that the active compounds in the mangrove extracts had the ability to inhibit bacterial growth at low concentrations, indicating great potential for the development of more efficient and economical antibacterial drugs. This study provides evidence that mangrove plant extracts have potential as antibacterial agents that can be further developed for the treatment of infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, thus providing an effective alternative to overcome the problem of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract

Ultrasonography (USG) is a diagnostic tool in medical imaging that operates on the principle of ultrasound waves emitted by a transducer. Recent advancements in USG technology have significantly enhanced its diagnostic capabilities. Renal elastography, a specialized application, enables the assessment of tissue stiffness or elasticity. The technique involves applying pressure to the tissue and measuring the resulting strain, providing valuable insights into the extent of fibrosis in the renal parenchyma. This article presents a comprehensive review of renal elastography ultrasonography and its clinical applications. USG is a non-invasive imaging modality that requires no special preparation, typically performed with the patient in a supine position. The kidneys are evaluated in longitudinal and transverse planes using a transducer positioned at the flank. Various elastography techniques exist, categorized based on the intensity of external pressure applied.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a form of microcytic anemia caused by impaired synthesis of the globin protein in hemoglobin, with β-thalassemia being one of the most common types. β-thalassemia arises from mutations in the β-globin gene located on chromosome 11, resulting in reduced or absent production of the β-globin chain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2019), the global prevalence of β-thalassemia major is estimated at 39.96 million people (5.2% of the world’s population), with 1.5% identified as carriers. In Indonesia, the 2018 Riskesdas survey reported 7,209 cases of β-thalassemia. The decreased synthesis of the β-globin chain leads to elevated levels of HbA2 and HbF. β-thalassemia is classified into three categories: minor, intermediate, and major. This review focuses on the characteristics of HbA2 and its significance in diagnosing the β-thalassemia carrier. This article is a narrative literature review that examines various studies on HbA2 (HbA2) and its role in the β-thalassemia carrier. The literature reviewed was sourced from several databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Elsevier, using the keywords "Carrier β-thalassemia" and "HbA2." The selected studies span from 2010 to 2024. Hemoglobin A (HbA) is the primary type of hemoglobin found in adults, with HbA2 and HbF serving as minor components. Individuals with β-thalassemia exhibit reduced or absent production of the β-globin chain, leading to an imbalance between α and β chains and an associated increase in HbA2 levels. Elevated HbA2 levels are commonly observed in β-thalassemia carriers, making this measurement important for predicting the risk of β-thalassemia major in their offspring. Studies suggest that HbA2 levels can be influenced by conditions such as megaloblastic anemia and iron deficiency. Additionally, factors like pregnancy and serum ferritin levels have been investigated, with mixed findings on their potential impact on HbA2 levels.

Abstract

Non-specific neck pain is a form of acute, subacute, or chronic neck pain, and there is no abnormal anatomical structure as the cause of the pain. Bad posture habits are a contributing factor to non-specific neck pain. This bad posture will cause muscle tension in the neck which can increase intramuscular pressure which can reduce circulation in the joints, as well as compression of the nervous system and blood vessels around it. This ends in the emergence of pain complaints. The cause of non-specific neck pain is multifactorial consisting of several risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for non-specific neck pain. The method used is article review. Searching for articles both nationally and internationally then summarizing the discussion topics and comparing the results presented in the article. Based on the review that has been done. Non-specific neck pain has a multifactorial cause consisting of several risk factors. Individual factors of non-specific neck pain include gender, age, BMI, and medical history. Work factors include duration of work, length of service, and work posture. Psychological factors include stress, depression, and lack of sleep. Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity are also risk factors for non-specific neck pain.

Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a group of symptoms caused by compression of the median nerve, resulting in increased carpal tunnel pressure on the wrist. Dominant paresthesia at night, pain that is worse at night, and weakness in the hands (for example, holding objects, making fists, and impaired fine motor skills in the hands) are symptoms that can occur in CTS sufferers. The incidence of CTS is estimated at 2.7-5.8% in the world, 7-16% in the UK, and 2.6 million adults (1.55%) experience CTS in the United States. The incidence of CTS is not yet known with certainty in Indonesia, but research in Denpasar reported that there was an incidence of CTS in workers of 79.2% (Paramita et al., 2021). CTS risk factors are divided into internal and external factors. Internal factors, including age, gender, nutritional status, pregnancy, menopause, other medical conditions (fracture or dislocation, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis). External factors, including repetitive wrist and hand movements, stiff and inappropriate work postures, long work duration. Physical and supporting examinations need to be carried out to help diagnose CTS. Examinations that can be carried out include provocation examinations, electrodiagnostic examinations and ultrasound examinations. Patients who have been diagnosed with CTS can be treated immediately to prevent further severity, including conservative therapy, pharmacological therapy, surgical therapy, or occupational therapy.
