Abstract

This study examines oral literature as a form of cultural communication that underlies literary tourism in Singkawang City, framing the inquiry within the field of interdisciplinary communication science. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were gathered through observation and interviews with storytellers, destination managers, and local government officials, supplemented by recording, transcription, and editing techniques. The findings reveal six folktales: Batu Belimbing, Gunung Poteng, Sibohe Waterfall, Bagak Sahwa Village, Tjhia Family House, and Batu Burung Beach, all classified as legends that function as narrative communication foundations for their respective tourist sites. Analysis of the communication context surrounding these narratives shows that intergenerational oral transmission is declining, with storytellers aged 29 to 73, and that the communicative occasions for these stories are shifting from family-based communication to more institutionalized forms such as theatrical performances or tourist-oriented communication encounters. The messages embedded in these oral narratives convey ecological, moral, and cultural values that function as communicative guidance for tourism management. Infrastructural assessment of the six destinations reveals significant disparities in how effectively each site communicates its narrative heritage to visitors: Batu Belimbing and Tjhia Family House are comparatively well-managed, while Gunung Poteng and Sibohe Waterfall remain critically underdeveloped. The study argues that positioning oral literature as a communication strategy within literary tourism offers a culturally grounded and sustainable path for heritage communication and tourism development in multiethnic border cities, contributing to interdisciplinary dialogue between communication science and cultural tourism studies.

Abstract

Unequal teacher distribution remains a persistent challenge in Indonesia despite the implementation of national standards for student-teacher ratios. This study aims to analyze the trends and proportions of student-teacher ratios in public and private elementary schools across Indonesia and to examine teacher distribution patterns in Sanggau Regency as a regional context. Employing a quantitative descriptive comparative approach, the study utilizes secondary data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and the Basic Education Data System (Dapodik) from 2021 to 2024. The unit of analysis comprises 38 provinces in Indonesia and Sanggau Regency. Student teacher ratios were calculated and analyzed using trend and comparative analyses. The findings reveal that the ratio in public elementary schools steadily declined from 15.35 in 2021/2022 to 14.29 in 2024/2025, indicating improved teacher availability, whereas private schools exhibited fluctuating patterns, ranging from 15.87 to 16.07. Three provinces, DKI Jakarta, West Java, and Banten, consistently exceeded the national ideal standard, suggesting the need for targeted teacher redistribution policies in high-density regions. In Sanggau Regency, overall ratios improved, yet substantial disparities among sub-districts persisted. The novelty of this study lies in integrating national trend analysis with regional contextual analysis to provide a more comprehensive understanding of teacher distribution dynamics. These findings emphasize the importance of data-driven and region-specific policies to achieve equitable teacher allocation and improve the quality of basic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The farming mantras of the Dayak Tamambaloh community embody ecological knowledge that reflects Indigenous relationships with nature and has been transmitted across generations through oral tradition. This study examines the ecological narratives embedded in these farming mantras and explores how they function as a medium of environmental communication. A descriptive-interpretive qualitative approach was employed using farming mantra texts and in-depth interviews with a purposively selected customary informant. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, informed by Garrard’s ecocritical perspective and Cox’s environmental communication framework. The findings reveal three interconnected ecological narratives: respect for nature, human–nature harmony, and environmental sustainability. These narratives position farming mantras as a cultural medium for transmitting ecological knowledge, environmental ethics, and customary values across generations. This study contributes to Indigenous environmental communication scholarship by demonstrating how oral literature functions as a medium for conserving and transmitting local ecological knowledge, thereby extending ecocritical understandings of Indigenous environmental practices. Because the analysis focuses on one key informant within a single ritual system, the findings should be understood as context-specific rather than broadly representative of all Dayak communities.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of flipbook media on the critical thinking and descriptive writing skills of fifth-grade elementary school students. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a nonequivalent control group design. The research subjects were 48 fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 12 Sungai Kunyit, consisting of 24 students in the experimental class and 24 students in the control class. The experimental class received instruction using flipbook media, while the control class used conventional media. Data were collected through critical thinking tests, descriptive writing tests, observation sheets, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene's homogeneity test, independent samples t-test, and Cohen's d effect size. The results showed a significant difference between the experimental and control classes in both critical thinking and descriptive writing skills, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. The effect size was large for critical thinking (d = 1.12) and descriptive writing (d = 0.95). Therefore, flipbook media was proven effective in improving students' critical thinking and descriptive writing skills. This study concludes that flipbook media can be used as an innovative digital learning resource to support Indonesian language learning and higher-order thinking skills in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe what is meant by learning to read, describe what factors cause first grade students to have difficulty reading, describe how teachers overcome difficulties in early reading in first grade students. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method. This study uses test instruments, observations, and interviews. The results of the study are as follows: difficulty reading one word pictures, not being able to recognize and pronounce the letters of the alphabet, difficulty distinguishing almost the same letters, not being able to spell, difficulty reading one open syllable, reading haltingly, quickly forgetting the words they spell and spelling for a long time, the factors causing early reading difficulties in first grade students of State Elementary School 14 Darok can be seen from two different factors, namely internal factors and external factors. Internal factors are factors that come from the students themselves, namely interest factors and motivation factors. While external factors come from parents and teachers to students. Factors originating from parents are lack of attention and support to children at home, actions taken by teachers in overcoming or handling students who experience early reading difficulties are by calling students repeatedly every day and then teaching them to read. Meanwhile, teacher factors include ineffective classroom management.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of a play-based learning approach on beginning reading and simple sentence writing skills among first-grade elementary school students. A pre-experimental study employing a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted with 25 first-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected through beginning reading and simple sentence writing tests administered before and after the implementation of the play-based learning approach and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that students’ literacy performance improved significantly after the intervention. The mean score increased from 65.00 in the pretest to 82.00 in the posttest, while the percentage of students achieving mastery learning rose from 32% to 84%. The paired-samples t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = [insert t-value], p < 0.001), indicating that the play-based learning approach effectively enhanced students’ beginning reading and simple sentence writing skills. These findings suggest that integrating play-based learning into early-grade literacy instruction can create more active, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the simultaneous improvement of beginning reading and simple sentence writing skills through a play-based learning approach, offering a more comprehensive perspective on early literacy development in elementary education.

Abstract

This study examined the integration of the Think Talk Write (TTW) model and Canva as a technology-supported instructional strategy for improving students’ descriptive writing and supporting their classroom engagement. A classroom action research design based on Lewin’s cyclical framework was implemented across two instructional cycles involving 31 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through descriptive writing assessments, classroom observations, instructional documentation, and informal conversations, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings showed progressive improvement in students’ descriptive writing achievement across the intervention cycles. The proportion of students meeting the minimum mastery criterion increased from 32.25% at baseline to 61.29% in Cycle I and 93.54% in Cycle II, accompanied by a substantial increase in mean writing scores. Classroom observations also indicated greater participation in group discussion, increased willingness to express ideas, and greater independence in completing writing tasks as the intervention progressed. The findings suggest that sequencing individual thinking, collaborative discussion, and writing through TTW, followed by a Canva-supported publication activity and targeted individual guidance, can provide a supportive instructional environment for descriptive writing. Rather than demonstrating the independent causal effect of either TTW or Canva, this study contributes a classroom-based pedagogical model that integrates cooperative learning, digital publication, and individualized support within an iterative writing intervention. Further controlled studies across broader educational settings are needed to examine the effectiveness and generalizability of this integrated approach.
