Abstract

Islam in Western thought has a very bad brand image and relative image. One Orientalist named Daniel W. Brown criticized the hadith and sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad for their nonconformity with textual and contextual passages. The study aimed to find out specifically about Brown's understanding of Hadith and Sunnah, factors that influenced Brown in criticizing both. The method approach chosen in this study is the qualitative method, while the data used is sourced from literature studies in the form of works written by Brown himself and other people's works on Brown's work and thoughts. The results of the study mentioned that Brown is an orientalist who is an expert in the field of historians who explore and study hadith and Sunnah using data, and the propositions of the Qur'an and hadith. Brown criticized the Sunnah and hadith not for personal gain or by order, but he criticized them because he was an expert in history. Brown mentioned found two tendencies of understanding the content in hadith, namely, the restriction of traditionalist and modern scriptures.

Abstract

Abstract: Al-Faruqi’s Theological Epistemology. This writing discusses the concept of tauhid theological epistimology incorporated as part of al-Faruqi’s construction of Islamic studies. As a contemporary Muslim thinker, al-Faruqi maintains that tauhid is a substantial point in human’s character building in various dimensions. As such, this gives rise to producing the dynamics of tauhid meanings in all aspects of life. This kind of tauhid essence has to be persued at the ontological and epis- temological conceptions. In order to explore such subtance, historical descriptive analysis approach is used so that the formulation of tauhid epistemology of al Faruqi could be known in detail throw light into the tauhid meanings in this life. The writer found that al-Faruqi’s scientific paradigm at the level of applying tauhid could be observed through epistemological perspective. This study tries to formulate such epistemological analysis, hoping that it will enlighten human life based on the principles of Islamic creed or tauhid.Kata Kunci: tauhid, epistemologi, Ismail R. al-Faruqi, antroposentris, teosentris

Abstract

This paper attempts to examine how fundamental-radical epistemology forms after the return of the power of Taliban in Afghanistan. To arrive at this topic, the author would firstly review the terminology and historical roots of fundamentalism-radicalism, and the factors that caused its emergence and its characteristics. The author uses a historical-phenomenological approach in doing the literature research to write this article. In analyzing obtained data, the author is using descriptive-analytical, historical, and holistic techniques. The results found are: first, the emergence of the understanding of fundamental-radical, which was initially only a political phenomenon, turned out to lead to systemic violence, actual violence, action, and symbolic violence. These are still threatening humanity because of the characteristics of their movements that are unwilling to communicate and attempt dialogue with relevant groups. Second, the factors behind the rise of radicalism are two, namely: socio-political factors and religious-related emotional factors. Third, the epistemology of fundamental-radicals lays only on literal and textual understanding. According to them, the truth lies in the understood sacred text, as it is.

Abstract

Theologically, the Acehnese ordain themselves as loyal followers of Sunni Islam, but there are Shi’a elements in their culture. To date, there are some traditions of expressing love for the Ahl al-Bayt (Prophet Muhammad’s family) which is one of the main characteristics of the Shi'a. This research is based on the hypothesis that several cultural practices in Aceh contain Shi’a elements. This study seeks to reveal the cultural practices of the Sunni followers in Aceh in expressing their love for the Ahl al-Bayt. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method from a combination of library and field data. This study found that, historically, the acculturation process of Shi'a culture into the Sunni followers in Aceh has coincided with the process of the arrival of Islam in the Indonesian Archipelago. This is possible given the position of Aceh in the history of Islamization in the Indonesian Archipelago. This acculturation has left traces of culture inspired by Shi’a such as the tradition of Ashura porridge, Boh Husayn cake. All these traditions have been preserved because these Shi'a values contain expressions of love for the Ahl al-Bayt who also have a place in the hearts of the Sunni adherents in Aceh.

Abstract

This study tries to describe the epistemology of Irfani and formulate the Irfani method in Islamic philosophy.  In this study, the researcher used the literature review method. This study concludes that Irfani means knowledge, where this knowledge is obtained directly through experience (experiment) on religious spiritual reality. Irfani's development is divided into six phases: 1) The nursery phase. 2) Birth phase. 3) Growth phase. 4) Peak phase. 5) The specification phase 6) The decline phase. Irfani's methods andstages: a) The first stage, preparation. b) The second stage, the acceptance stage. c) The third stage, disclosure. Irfani in the perspective of Islamic Philosophy can be seen in the explanation of Muhyiddin ibn 'Arabi, who said Makrifat and this intuitive knowledge are not reached by reason and rational argumentation, but by divine guidance. Surahwardi does not consider that intuitive knowledge (read: irfani knowledge) precedes reasonable knowledge. The preamble of intuitive knowledge is the purification and enlightenment of the soul, which is a prelude to rational discussion, namely the science of logic.

Abstract

Islam in Western thought has a very bad brand image and relative image. One western figure named Voltaire included an orientalist who insulted the Prophet Muhammad and the religion of Islam. The study aimed to find out specifically about Voltaire's understanding of the Prophet Muhammad and the religion of Islam, factors that influenced Voltaire in committing insults. The approach of the method chosen in this study is qualitative method, while the data used is sourced from literature review in the form of works written by Voltaire himself and the works of others on the work and thoughts of Voltaire. The results of the study said Voltaire initially hated Islam by mentioning the nascent religion and also called the Prophet Muhammad as a perverted many marrying women, girls and widows. Voltaire's reason for doing so was that he wanted to criticize the church's inappropriate policies through the issue of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. At the end of his history Voltaire upheld the tolerance of Islam and did not exist in Protestantism that is, Caliph Umar allowed Jews and Christians full freedom of conscience after the conquest of Jerusalem.

Abstract

This article discusses the shifting of hadith eyes while shaking hands and the phenomenon of changing the practice of shaking hands to elbow greetings initiated by the Indonesian government in 2020. Sri Mulyani (Minister of Finance) and Ma'ruf Amin (Vice President) practiced how to shake hands during the Corona Virus outbreak with elbow greetings, considering Indonesia occupies the first position in the spread of Coronavirus in Southeast Asia. The elbow greeting is opposed to the Sunnah, and the Prophet Muhammad taught his people to shake hands by shaking hands by the hadith of the Prophet narrated by Abu Daud.  This paper uses the qualitative descriptive method of Maqashid Sharia theory, namely contextualizing verses with social conditions, which aims to find benefits and reduce harm in Indonesian society. The results of research using Maqashid Sharia theory in the phenomenon of elbow greeting practice have not been well elaborated so the practice of elbow greetings has not been able to minimize the spread of the Corona Virus in Indonesia with positive koban data and deaths continue to increase. The criteria for goodness and mudharatan in changing the practice of shaking hands to elbow greetings were not met, considering that there are some more important and precarious 'uzur elements that are not implemented by the Indonesian government.

Abstract

Said Nursi's first effort was to make people aware of the importance of education, where Islam is "education for the people." An awareness of the unity and cohesiveness of modern religion and science accompanies this effort. This is where Said Nursi's position emerges as a reformer who wants to make improvements to "save faith and Islam." Said Nursi, in the practice of Islamic Education has the character of religious humanism thinking, which is a spiritual concept that places man by the purpose of his creation by the Creator, as well as efforts to teach sciences while still being based on faith, understanding of the Qur'an, the last day and scientific synergy. This concept is an attempt to unite religious values with humanity. Religion is not only a belief system but also a humanitarian-oriented deal. Thus, Islamic education based on religious humanists in the perspective of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi is a concept that can develop human potential, both worldly and ukhrowi aspects, to create a balanced person about fellow beings (hablun minannas) and with the Creator (hablun minallah).

Abstract

Paul Karl Feyerabend has an idea called Epistemological Anarchism, which is a method used to criticize the establishment of knowledge with the aim of developing science itself. Academic freedom is one of the attitudes to develop knowledge while prioritizing objectivity. This research will discuss the implications of Feyerabend's thinking on developing knowledge and science in Islam. This research uses a library research approach with the method of collecting library data related to the research topic. The study results show that Feyerabend's concept of epistemological anarchism holds that there are no methodological rules in the development of knowledge and science. Feyerabend, finding a truth does not have to be through unnecessary falsification, but a truth can be found through new theories that have practical benefits. Epistemological anarchism has relevance to the epistemology of science development in Islam, namely as a way or steps to obtain educational knowledge based on Islamic fundamentals.
