Abstract

This article discusses the role of Medina as a center of Islamic scholarship and education during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). After the migration from Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad made Medina not only the center of government, but also the center of civilization and the development of Islamic knowledge. Educational activities during that period took place through several institutions such as the Prophet's Mosque, Suffah, and Kuttāb, which served as means of fostering faith, worship, morals, and literacy among the Muslim community. This study examines in depth the Islamic education system in Medina during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which includes educational institutions, the role of the companions as teachers, and the learning methods applied by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the main educator with the support of his companions who also acted as teachers. The educational methods applied included exemplary behavior (uswah ḥasanah), dialogue, habituation, memorization of the Qur'an, and the dispatch of teachers to various regions. This research uses a literature study method with a descriptive qualitative approach to examine primary and secondary sources regarding the Islamic education system during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), using in-depth analysis and a literature review. The results of the study show that education in Medina is integral, inclusive, and oriented towards the formation of a well-rounded personality, covering cognitive, spiritual, social, and moral aspects. The education system established by the Prophet Muhammad in Medina became the main foundation for the birth of a sustainable Islamic scholarly tradition that remains relevant as a model for Islamic education throughout the ages, integrating structured institutions, competent teaching staff, and effective learning methods.

Abstract

The development of knowledge during the Abbasid Caliphate marked the emergence of the Islamic Golden Age, supported by political and institutional backing for intellectual activities. In this context, mathematics flourished through processes of translation, synthesis, and innovation, reaching its peak in the works of Al-Khawarizmi. This study examines the historical dynamics of the development of mathematics during the Abbasid Caliphate, focusing its analysis on Al-Khawarizmi’s intellectual contributions. The research employs the historical method with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature-based data collection techniques. The research procedures include heuristics, interpretation, and synthesis of various sources discussing the development of algebra, arithmetic, and algorithms during that period. The findings indicate that Al-Khawarizmi made significant contributions to the systematic formulation of algebraic concepts, the introduction of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, and the development of algorithmic methods that later became foundational to modern computer science. With the support of the Abbasid caliphs, particularly through the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, mathematics advanced rapidly and had a profound impact on Islamic civilization as well as the wider world.

Abstract

The Fatimid Dynasty (909–1171 AD) in Egypt marked one of the most important phases in the history of Islamic education. As a dynasty that embraced Ismaili Shi'ism, the Fatimids not only strengthened their political power, but also actively developed an education system as a means of spreading ideology and knowledge. One of their most monumental contributions was the establishment of Al-Azhar University in 970 AD, which initially functioned as a center for spreading Ismaili teachings, but later developed into an inclusive center of Islamic scholarship. The Fatimid government provided significant support for the development of educational institutions through funding, establishing libraries, and appointing prominent scholars as teachers. This article aims to historically examine the development and role of Islamic educational institutions during the Fatimid Dynasty and their contribution to the Islamic scholarly tradition. The method used is a literature study with a historical-critical approach to primary and secondary sources. The results of the study show that the Fatimid Dynasty succeeded in creating an organized education system that became a model for the development of Islamic educational institutions in subsequent periods.

Abstract

Islamic education during Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) era evolved from secretive home-based learning in Mecca to structured institutions in Medina amid social-political challenges. This study aims to analyze this transformation from home and Dar al-Arqam to mosque, Suffah, and Kuttab for adaptive modern models. It employs qualitative systematic literature review (SLR) via PRISMA, targeting literature on early Islamic education (1972-2025) from Google Scholar and Scopus; purposive sampling yielded 30 sources until theoretical saturation. Instruments include documentation and content observation, analyzed via Miles-Huberman's reduction-display-conclusion with source triangulation. Findings reveal dynamic shifts: Dar al-Arqam for tauhid foundations, mosques for multifunctional halaqah, Suffah for poor scholars' regeneration, and post-Badr Kuttab for Quranic literacy. In conclusion, this holistic, adaptive model integrates faith, knowledge, and skills, offering curriculum reconstruction for digital disruptions.
