Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the 12th-grade students’ online learning readiness in utilizing basic technological functions in their English teaching and learning process. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was employed, surveying 233 students from Hospitality and Culinary classes at a senior vocational high school in South Bali through a questionnaire. Interviews were further conducted via personal messages with two highest readiness level students and two lowest readiness levels to comprehensively study readiness. The questionnaire result indicated that students are prepared to use basic functions of technology for online learning, with a few necessary improvements. Interview findings revealed that highly prepared students are more motivated to engage in online learning, whereas less prepared students are more demotivated due to factors like online learning support, familiarity with tools, and supporting facilities. It is suggested to actively support the less-ready students with highly engaged learning activities, pedagogically empowered teachers, and supportive policies and facilities.

Abstract

Carrying out effective learning and appropriate classroom assessment during the coronavirus pandemic could be highly challenging for the teachers to do. Teachers need to utilize various technological devices to assess students' learning competence. This is due to online learning has become a priority in learning activities in the pandemic situation. This study found that English teachers implemented three types of online assessment strategies to improve students' learning competence during the pandemic of Covid-19 in Indonesia. Those strategies are online test administration, portfolio, and self-assessment. Several challenges were accoutered by the teachers in carrying out the classroom assessment through online systems such as slow internet network, expensive internet quota prices, limited access to computer and smartphone devices, poor ability in using digital technology, difficulty in conducting effective interaction. Feedback was occasionally provided when the learning processes were conducted through zoom meeting or google meet. The study implies that teachers should improve their communication technology ability and fulfill online assessment strategies' administrative procedures. HIGHLIGTS: Most teachers explain that they encountered similar challenges which were mainly about slow internet connection, expensive internet quota prices, poor ability in technology, and difficulty in communicating effectively with their students. The challenges encountered by the teachers were similar in their forms but the degree of difficulty depended upon the geographical location, economical background, and experiences in using technology Another difficulty encountered by teachers is providing feedback on the students’ assessment results. Teachers found it difficult to communicate directly to students to explain students’ problems in learning.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the forms and contributions of integrating local wisdom into physics learning to improve students' scientific literacy. The background of this review is the low level of scientific literacy in Indonesia, as indicated by the 2018 PISA data, highlighting the need for contextual approaches in education, including the use of local wisdom. The method used is a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, involving identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion of articles from Scopus, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases for the 2020–2025 period. From 19,534 documents initially identified, 15 articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that the forms of local wisdom integration include traditional tools, cultural ceremonies, local foods, traditional houses, and social values, all connected to physics topics such as motion, heat, pressure, and energy. This integration has been proven to enhance students’ scientific literacy across four dimensions: cognitive (conceptual understanding), procedural (scientific skills), affective (attitudes toward science and culture), and contextual (ability to relate science to real-life situations). The findings affirm that local wisdom holds significant potential as a relevant and humanistic learning approach aligned with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum. This review is expected to serve as a foundation for developing more systematic and applicable models of physics learning based on local culture at the secondary school level.

Abstract

Translanguaging is a sociolinguistic phenomenon that enables bilingual or multilingual speakers to utilize their entire linguistic repertoire to achieve communication goals. With the development of the digital era, this phenomenon has begun to shift to social media platforms such as TikTok. This study aims to identify the types of translanguaging used by Sunny Dahye in TikTok content and the frequency of their occurrence. This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed method design. Data were collected by selecting and watching videos, transcribing them, and identifying the types of translanguaging using an observation sheet. The findings of this study reveal that intra-sentential translanguaging is most frequently used in TikTok content, with the alternation involving longer elements such as phrases or clauses from English and Indonesian in a single sentence structure being the most common form of translanguaging used by the speaker. In addition, translanguaging is used as a communication strategy to express emotions, represent identity as a bilingual individual, and build engagement with the audience. The implications of this study suggest that language learners can utilize platforms such as TikTok to create bilingual content, which trains language skills and builds contextual meaning. Digital media can also be used as an alternative learning space outside of formal classrooms to encourage students to be more critical in improving their language skills and understanding, as well as to understand how language shift occurs, which can reflect cultural dynamics. Furthermore, this study enriches findings on language dynamics in digital spaces by showing that translanguaging is more than just a linguistic phenomeno.
