Abstract

This study aims to analyze why there are practitioners today who still interpret Rajah Panyengker (mystical script) as a means of obtaining understanding, safety. Yet in reality they also practice Hindu religious rituals with the same purpose. The answers to these questions are sought in the arena of social struggle of practitioners Rajah Panyengker. In relation to their desire to emerge victorious in the arena of social and social struggle, they felt the need to convert capital so that they would not lose against their colleagues, fellow practitioners. The size of a practitioner's cultural capital is very dependent on his habitus. Therefore the answers to the research questions will be sought in the formation of the habitus of Rajah Panyengker practitioners. How the habitus forms the mystical cultural capital of practitioners regarding Rajah Panyengker, then places it in the arena of social struggle of the Balinese people today. Thus the focus of this study is directed at the meeting between the arenas of practitioners' internal social struggle with the users of Rajah Penyengker. Generative structural theory is used as a basis for thinking to understand and explain these problems. The conclusion of this study, that to emerge victorious in the arena of social struggle, practitioners fulfill the wishes of patients who want to get Rajah Penyengker. In the arena of social struggle like that, practitioners Rajah Panyengker do capital conversion. Thus this phenomenon illustrates the increasing arena of social struggle for practitioners of Rajah Penyenker today, not to search for positivistic origins or their backgrounds to interpret Rajah Penyengker. Keywords: Rajah Panyengker, social struggle, practitioners

Abstract

Pottery craftsmen in Pejaten Village still survive producing traditional pottery amid changes in their socio-cultural space. This study aims to analyze the reasons they persist in the realm of traditional pottery crafts today. This study uses the paradigm of critical thinking with a qualitative approach that views social reality as something that is intact, complex, dynamic, full of meaning with interactive symptom relationships. This research, analyzed by the generative structural theory of Pierre Bourdieu. Theory to explain the practice in the realm of pottery crafts in Pejaten Village. Bourdieu made a generative formula about practice, namely: (Habitus x Capital) + Domain = Practice. The results of this study indicate the survival practice of these pottery craftsmen by applying the habitus cutting strategy, in the form of intergenerational skills through informal education between families. Habitus they have internalized in individuals and make them have cultural capital. Ownership of cultural capital can be converted into other forms of capital, but the ability to convert capital cannot be done by all individuals, even though they grow and have a similar habitus. This is influenced by cognitive abilities, reasoning power, episteme, and individual experiences. This results in a class structure in the realm. Ownership of habitus and cultural capital is not sufficient to survive in this realm. Other capital ownership is needed, such as: economic capital, social capital, and symbolic capital. The results of this study can be used as a reference for developing the cultural sustainability of the traditional heritage between generations in responding to the changes that have occurred in the social space for pottery handicrafts in Pejaten Village today. Keywords: sustainability, habitus, capital, traditional pottery craftsmen.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the concept of plant conservation based on local wisdom in Old Javanese literature. The issue of nature conservation, including plant conservation, has so far been dominated by a scientific approach and tends to deny cultural or literary approaches. The data of this research is sourced from Old Javanese literary texts. Data were collected using reading methods, both heuristic and hermeneutic, and data were analyzed using descriptive analytic methods based on semiotic theory. The results of the study show that Old Javanese literature has the concept of nature conservation in the form of efforts to protect nature (bhuwanaraksana) and maintain the purity and sanctity of nature, including plants (úudhabhumi). Conservation of plants in Old Javanese literature is oriented towards world welfare (jagadhita). The harmonious relationship between man and God, man and man, and man and nature are the three sources of prosperity (trihitakarana). Conservation of plants according to Old Javanese literary texts puts forward the treatment of plants as creatures created by God and humans have a very close relationship, even in meeting the needs of human life, it is very dependent on plants. Therefore, the conservation of plants must be done by humans for the welfare of the world.

Abstract

The ocean is in an increasingly severe ecological crisis, which has an impact on the crisis of the universe at large. The attitude of people who are increasingly moving away from tradition and traditional sources of reference and prioritizing worldliness is thought to be one of the causes of the marine crisis. Therefore, efforts to encourage people to manage the sea more wisely must continue to be encouraged. This article aims to examine the local wisdom of the sea in ancient Javanese literature from the perspective of Hindu theology and to contribute to raising public awareness through a more complete and comprehensive understanding of the sea. The method used in the research is a qualitative method using Old Javanese literary texts as the main data source. The reading method was used in data collection assisted by the techniques of script transfer, language transfer, and recording. Data analysis was carried out by applying the content analysis method based on the working principles of semiotic theory. The result found is that the narrative of the sea in Old Javanese literature has a Hindu theological dimension. The sea is understood in a cross-section of Hindu theology starting with the awareness of the Impersonal God (Nirguna Brahman) by calling God Sang Hyang Adisuksma, towards the awareness of the Personal God (Saguna Brahman) by calling God as Lord Baruna, worshiped as an istadewata whose role is to control the laws of the universe (rta). The sea (segara) is glorified as a pair of mountains (giri) in the conception of segara-giri is a sacred axis in Hindu life, both as a source of life, a source of disaster and disease and a source of liberation. The theological construction of Old Javanese literature is imbued with Hindu theology as mandated by the Vedas.

Abstract

Kakawin Surantaka is an Old Javanese poetic work composed in Bali, depicting a fragment of the Mahabharata during the Pandavas' exile in the forest. The narrative centres on Arjuna, who encounters and triumphs over various adversaries throughout his journey. This study explores the concept of sura (heroism) in the text, as it embodies significant heroic values that remain relevant in fostering patriotism today. Using a qualitative approach, this research employs descriptive analysis and Riffaterre’s semiotic framework, focusing on the matrix, models, and variants within the literary structure. The study identifies key first-level models representing sura, including pĕjah (death), wira (bravery), anugraha (blessing), and śakta (devotion or abandonment). These concepts are then re-actualized through their variants in the text. The findings reveal that sura in Kakawin Surantaka represents a heroic figure characterized by courage, strength, inner harmony, and spiritual blessings. Such a hero must overcome both external and internal adversaries to achieve physical and spiritual fulfilment, ultimately attaining true peace. Through the semiotic analysis of matrix, model, and variant elements, the kakawin conveys a profound moral and spiritual message: true heroism is rooted in perseverance and wisdom, leading to victory in life’s challenges.
