Abstract

Despite its recognized importance, the role of critical thinking (CRIT) in promoting authentic problem-solving (APS), collaborative learning (COL), creative thinking (CRET), and knowledge creation efficacy (KCE) in different regional contexts still needs to be investigated. This study uses partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and partial least squares-multi group analysis (PLS-MGA) to evaluate the effect of CRIT on these skills and compare the effect between municipality and regency, using data from 431 high school students in Indonesia. The Ranger algorithm identified the main predictors of the impact of CRIT on the other skills. The findings revealed that CRIT significantly improved the impacts of these skills, with no significant differences between regions. The ability to provide sound reasoning and consider diverse perspectives were the main predictors. This study contributes to the relatively under-attended area of CRIT in Indonesian education by highlighting its important role in skills development.

Abstract

Sustainability consciousness acts as a compass in making considerations, behaving, and acting with attention to sustainability aspects. This research aims to determine how the sustainability consciousness of high school students is assessed using the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ), which has been adapted and tailored to the research context. The collected data were analyzed using comprehensive Rasch modeling to measure latent variables. The Rasch analysis was conducted using the Winsteps application, focusing on validity, reliability, student sustainability consciousness, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF). Based on the Rasch analysis, it was found that the sustainability consciousness of the students was relatively good and varied across three analyzed dimensions: sustainability knowingness, sustainability attitudes, and sustainability behavior. The DIF analysis revealed that there were two items out of a total of 27 that fell into the DIF category. This indicates that there are differences in responses shown by male and female students. These findings support previous research regarding how attitudes toward sustainability differ based on gender. Furthermore, the topics explored in biology learning are highly relevant to the majority of issues that are central to sustainability concerns. Therefore, through biology education, students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors can be nurtured and developed. In this way, the knowledge they acquire can be transformed into concrete actions. Moreover, this study contributes to empirical research on sustainability consciousness demonstrated by high school students.

Abstract

Ethnoscience, which integrates traditional knowledge with scientific approaches, is increasingly attracting attention in the academic community as a culture-based solution to various global challenges. This study aims to analyze publication trends and research topics in ethnoscience over the past decade (2014-2024) using a bibliometric approach. A total of 84 articles indexed in Scopus were analyzed to evaluate trends in the number of publications, geographical distribution, as well as hot topics based on keyword co-occurrence analysis. The results showed a significant increase in the number of publications and citations, with the largest spike in the 2019-2024 period. Indonesia became the country with the largest contribution (more than 50% of publications), followed by Brazil and the United States, which focused on exploring local traditions and interdisciplinary approaches, respectively. The topic analysis identified two main themes: critical thinking and problem-solving as the most recent focus and scientific literacy and context-based learning as the most cited themes. These findings suggest that ethnoscience is increasingly relevant in global research, especially in supporting culture-based education, sustainability and local innovation to face global challenges. This study recommends strengthening international collaborations and further exploration of the integration of ethnoscience with technology and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

The development of science and technology has led to a process of change in all aspects of education which includes students’ competencies such as attitudes, knowledge, and skills. However, in reality schools students tend to be disinterested when conventional learning like lecture method is carried out, the level of curiosity or research on students is still low, and students are not accustomed to learning independently or exploring new information about a theory. This study aims to determine the effect of Inquiry Based Learning on the students’ competence. This type of research is meta-analysis conducted by summarizing, reviewing and analyzing data from several previous studies. The research sample consisted of 22 articles taken from journals that already had an ISSN. The data analysis technique used in this study is calculating the effect size of each article. Based on the research results, two conclusions were drawn. First, viewed from educational level, Inquiry Based Learning is more effectively applied at the high school level particularly to enhance students’ attitudes and knowledge competencies with an effect size of 2.47 and 1.45, respectively; when concerning skill competency, IBL is more effective to be used at the tertiary level with an effect size of 2.19. Second, the Inquiry Based Learning is more suitable to be used in physics subjects, especially to develop attitude and knowledge competencies, with an effect size of 2.47 and 1.30, respectively; while skill competency is more effectively implemented to teach biochemistry subjects with an effect size of 2.19.

Abstract

In today's developments, the role of educators is not only needed in terms of sharing knowledge with students but also in preparing teaching media and materials that can help accelerate the delivery of material. The purpose of this study was to explore the needs analysis in developing physics e-modules on work and energy material for class X Senior High School. This study employed surveys under quantitative and qualitative approaches. There were 153 students involved in this study. The quantitative data were collected through learning resources and learning media instruments, while qualitative data were collected using interview instruments, questionnaires, observation, analysis of procedures and survey document. The results of this study showed that most of the learning resources and teaching materials used by teachers in schools were printed books with a score of 81%, and the most frequently used media in teaching was PowerPoint media with a score of 41.67%. This fact resulted in the lack of students’ interest in solving everyday problems and low students’ learning outcomes. In other words, the learning media used in the classroom did not suit their needs, so the development of teaching materials and media is needed to facilitate students in learning activities independently. Teaching Work and Energy materials that are widely applied in everyday life requires media in the form of physics e-modules. The development of physics e-modules on work and energy materials can overcome the problems found in the classroom, especially when teaching that material.
