Abstract

This study aims to develop learning media based on virtual tours of local products in Lebak Regency and measure its effectiveness in improving media literacy and understanding of social studies learning concepts of elementary school students. The method used was an experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design, involving 64 grade IV students who were divided into two groups: an experimental group that used virtual tour media and a control group that used conventional learning methods. The virtual tour media is designed to introduce Lebak's local products, such as handicrafts, typical foods, and the production process, so that students can learn interactively without distance and time restrictions. Data was obtained through media literacy tests, social studies comprehension tests, observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using parametric statistical tests, including normality tests, homogeneity, independent sample t-tests, and normalized gain analysis (N-Gain). The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in media literacy and social studies comprehension compared to the control group. In addition, students in the experimental group responded positively to the use of virtual tour media. The virtual tour media has proven to be effective not only to increase students' understanding of the learning material, but also to strengthen their appreciation of local wisdom. The recommendation for further research is the development of similar media that can be implemented in other subjects with different local contexts.

Abstract

This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively examine and synthesize existing research on teaching difficult history in the classroom. Difficult history includes emotionally charged, controversial, or challenging topics for educators and students. Twenty-three publications from the Scopus database from 2014-2023 were selected for review using PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Then, four research questions were used to guide the review and analysis centered on difficult history content, pedagogical approaches, teachers’ challenges to offering a comprehensive understanding of difficult history learning in schools, and the impact of difficult history on students. Reviews reveal that scholars are increasingly interested in studying difficult historical topics and highlighting dark events in various regions worldwide. Teaching difficult history requires multiple pedagogical approaches, including affective learning, experiential learning, and inquiry-based learning. Teaching difficult history contributes to empathy, critical thinking skills, and historical consciousness to encourage students to connect past events to present-day issues. Mengajarkan sejarah pelik memerlukan berbagai pendekatan pedagogi, termasuk pembelajaran afektif (affective learning), pembelajaran berdasarkan pengalaman (experiential learning), dan pembelajaran berbasis inkuiri. Mengajarkan sejarah pelik berkontribusi pada empati, keterampilan berpikir kritis, dan kesadaran sejarah untuk mendorong siswa menghubungkan peristiwa masa lalu dengan isu-isu masa kini.

Abstract

There are many studies related to gender representation in textbooks, but there is still limited research specifically focused on the representation of women in Indonesian social studies textbooks. This study aims to address that gap by analyzing the portrayal of women in three Indonesian social studies textbooks in comparison to the dominant representation of men. The findings suggest that the authors of these textbooks are generally mindful of gender equality and strive to represent both men and women. However, the majority of representations of women tend to be stereotyped, both in images and text. This analysis demonstrates that social studies textbook authors and curriculum designers would benefit from a deeper awareness of the stereotypes that depict unequal gender roles for both women and men. It is essential to avoid gender stereotypes, as social studies textbooks not only provide theoretical and practical knowledge but also convey underlying values such as gender equity.
