Abstract

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of tea leaf extract as a corrosion inhibitor for steel under real coastal atmospheric exposure. The novelty of this work lies in its direct assessment of a plant-derived inhibitor in an open-air marine environment, a setting that has not been adequately addressed in previous studies, which have largely focused on controlled aqueous systems. In addition, this study employs mature tea leaves, an abundant agricultural byproduct with naturally high tannin content, processed through a simple, solvent-free extraction method, thereby offering a sustainable route for green inhibitor development. The extract was obtained from mature tea leaves through aqueous boiling, and its tannin content was quantified using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. ASSAB 760 steel specimens were coated by immersion in tea extract at varying concentrations and soaking durations, followed by natural exposure in a coastal environment for 1 to 30 days. Corrosion behavior was evaluated using the weight loss method. The results showed that mature tea leaves contained the highest tannin concentration (29530.95 ppm), supporting their selection for inhibitor application. The optimum extract concentration was identified as 11000 ppm with a 5-hour immersion time. Under these conditions, treated steel exhibited a substantially lower corrosion rate (7.78 × 10⁻⁵ g/cm²/day) compared to untreated steel (1.66 × 10⁻⁴ g/cm²/day), corresponding to a maximum inhibition efficiency of 84.71%. The inhibition mechanism is attributed to the formation of a stable Fe³⁺–tannin chelate complex that adsorbs onto the steel surface, forming a protective film that restricts the ingress of aggressive chloride-rich moisture in the coastal atmosphere. Overall, the findings demonstrate the practical viability of mature tea leaf extract as an effective and environmentally benign atmospheric corrosion inhibitor, providing field-relevant insight into sustainable protection strategies for marine-exposed steel infrastructure.

Abstract

This research focuses on the urgency of improving students' critical thinking skills, recognized as a crucial competency for facing 21st-century challenges. To address this challenge, the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model has been identified as a strategic and effective pedagogical approach for fostering higher-order cognitive abilities. Previous literature has confirmed the positive contribution of PjBL to learning outcomes, but there is a significant research gap regarding the exploration of the internal mechanisms underlying this success, namely Deep Learning. Deep Learning, which involves comprehensive understanding of meaning rather than mere memorization, is a crucial prerequisite for the authentic and transferable development of students' critical thinking skills. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to empirically test and analyze the effect of the PjBL model on improving students' critical thinking skills in relation to the quality of the Deep Learning it facilitates. Using a quasi-experimental method, the results of this study are expected to provide clear theoretical and practical contributions, demonstrating that the effectiveness of PjBL in improving critical thinking skills stems from its ability to encourage students to engage in deeper knowledge processing.

Abstract

This meta-analysis investigates the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills in science education. A total of 42 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2024 were analyzed, covering diverse educational levels and scientific disciplines. The analysis revealed a large average effect size (ES = 0.798; 95% CI: 0.782–0.813), indicating a strong positive impact of PBL. The low standard error (SE = 0.043–0.060) reflects high estimation precision. Statistical tests, including funnel plot symmetry, Trim-and-Fill analysis (p = 0.991), and Egger’s regression test (p = 0.947), confirm the absence of significant publication bias. Moreover, residual heterogeneity was minimal (τ² = 0.000), validating the appropriateness of the fixed-effects model. These findings provide robust empirical evidence that PBL is consistently effective across various contexts in improving students’ 21st-century competencies. The study offers meaningful implications for educators and policymakers in designing science learning strategies that foster higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the development of LKPD (Student Worksheet) for enhancing critical thinking skills of elementary school students. The LKPD used has not yet captured the students' attention. The LKPD has not been able to improve students' learning motivation because it does not align with their learning styles. LKPD serves as teaching material used by teachers to facilitate the delivery of content and achieve learning objectives. This study aims to develop LKPD and assess its validity using the Inquiry model to improve critical thinking skills in Science education about the conservation of natural resources in the 4th-grade class. The type of research used is research and development (R&D), employing the 4-D model. This model consists of four development stages: define, design, development, and dissemination. Based on the results of the validation of LKPD using the Inquiry model to enhance critical thinking skills, the LKPD is deemed feasible for use. The material aspect validation result was 85.41% (valid), the design aspect validation result was 86.53% (valid), and the language aspect validation result was 94.44% (very valid). Therefore, the LKPD using the Inquiry model to improve critical thinking skills is valid.
