Abstract

Chemical numeracy is essential for understanding quantitative concepts in chemistry; however, there are indications of achievement gaps between male and female students. This study aims to analyze the influence of gender on students' numeracy skills when implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The study population consisted of Phase F students at three high schools in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The sample comprised 188 students selected through purposive sampling based on initial ability equivalence. The research sample came from three schools, each serving as a research context for different topics: salt hydrolysis (experimental class = 33; control class = 30), reaction rates (experimental class = 35; control class = 35), and chemical equilibrium (experimental class = 26; control class = 29). The research instrument consisted of a chemistry numerical literacy test on reaction rates, chemical equilibrium, and salt hydrolysis, which experts had validated. Instruction in the experimental classes used the PBL model, while the control classes used conventional instruction, as typically implemented in schools. Data were analyzed using the N-gain test, normality test, homogeneity test, and Two-Way ANOVA. Results showed that improvement in numerical literacy in chemistry was greater in PBL classes than in control classes. Statistical analysis indicated that the PBL model had a significant effect on improving numerical literacy in chemistry. Gender was significant in only one school, and the interaction between the learning model and gender was also significant there, suggesting that the model's effectiveness may vary by context. These findings indicate that PBL is effective in enhancing students' numerical literacy in chemistry and imply that chemistry instruction should be designed around problem-solving approaches to develop quantitative reasoning and a contextual understanding of chemical concepts.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is a crucial competency in modern education. However, limited studies have examined its impact on science literacy within the Indonesian Phase F curriculum context. This research seeks to investigate the effect of using a problem- based learning (PBL) e-module on chemical equilibrium on the science literacy skills of Phase F students at SMAN 9 Padang. It employs a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The population consists of Phase F students at SMAN 9 Padang, while the sample includes Class XI F3 (27 students) and Class XI F8 (27 students). The samples were selected through purposive sampling to meet the research criteria, namely students with relatively similar ability levels. The research instrument consisted of a test designed to measure students’ science literacy abilities. Data were analyzed using N-gain calculations, normality and homogeneity tests, as well as hypothesis testing. The findings indicate that the average N-gain in the experimental group (0.55) is higher than that in the control group (0.45). The results of the normality and homogeneity tests show that the data are follow a normal distribution and are homogeneous. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing using a t-test revealed that the obtained t-count value (2.3781) is greater than the critical t-table value (1.6747). These findings indicate that the use of a PBL-based chemistry equilibrium e-module provides a significant effect on enhancing students’ science literacy in high school.

Abstract

Student achievement is an important indicator in assessing the quality of higher education, but this achievement still shows significant variation, indicating the influence of internal student factors. One non-cognitive factor suspected to play a role is academic persistence, namely the ability to maintain effort and consistency in achieving long-term goals. This study aims to analyze the relationship between academic persistence and student achievement and its implications for curriculum development. The study used a quantitative approach with a survey. Participants were 192 undergraduate students in Chemistry Education and Chemistry Science at Padang State University, selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure academic persistence and documented GPA as an indicator of achievement. Data analysis included validity, reliability, and normality tests, as well as Pearson correlation and simple linear regression. The results showed that the instrument had good validity and high reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.784. The normality test indicated that the data were normally distributed (p = 0.071). The results of the correlation analysis indicate a strong and significant positive relationship between academic persistence and student achievement (r = 0.780; p < 0.05). The regression results show a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.609, which means that academic persistence contributes 60.9% to the variation in student achievement. This finding indicates that the higher the academic persistence, the higher the student achievement. The implications of this study emphasize integrating non-cognitive character strengthening into curriculum development. This can be realized through Project-Based Learning, process-based assessment, lecturers as facilitators providing constructive feedback, and supporting programs such as growth mindset training, academic mentoring, and stress management to produce graduates who are academically strong and resilient.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to measure and find out the validity of the points in Science Physics questions for class VII SMP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo regarding the subject matter of temperature and heat through a quantitative descriptive approach and data collection techniques which were carried out using a test technique in the form of temperature and heat questions totaling 25 items in the form of multiple choices. The population used was all students of class VII SMP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo as many as 224 students spread over 7 parallel classes, 40 students were taken randomly. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using the Anates program version 4 for windows. The results showed that the level of validity of the questions was moderate, namely 0.42. Keywords: Validity, Problem, Science Physics
