Abstract

This study aimed to determine the description of learning motivation, learning activeness, and mathematical communication ability of Grade VIII students at MTs Miftahussalam Medan, as well as to examine the relationship among these variables. This research used a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The population of this study consisted of all Grade VIII students totaling 91 students, while the research sample consisted of 30 students who were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires to measure students’ learning motivation and learning activeness, and tests to measure students’ mathematical communication ability. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman correlation test with the assistance of the SPSS program. The results of the study showed that students’ learning motivation, learning activeness, and mathematical communication ability were in the moderate category. In addition, the results of the correlation analysis indicated that there was no significant relationship between learning motivation, learning activeness, and students’ mathematical communication ability. These findings suggested that students’ mathematical communication ability was influenced by other factors beyond motivation and learning activeness.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh rendahnya kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis peserta didik akibat kurangnya inovasi pembelajaran dan pemanfaatan media yang relevan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari. Salah satu solusi yang ditawarkan adalah penggunaan LKPD berbasis etnomatematika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan LKPD berbasis etnomatematika terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis peserta didik kelas VIII MTs YP. Raudhatul Akmal. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dengan desain quasi experiment tipe two group pretest-posttest control group. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 66 peserta didik yang terdiri dari 35 kelas eksperimen dan 31 kelas kontrol. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes essay pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis pada kelas eksperimen, dengan nilai rata-rata meningkat dari 44,6 menjadi 84,6. Uji hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa t_hitung (18,152) lebih besar dari t_tabel (1,998), sehingga H₀ ditolak dan Hₐ diterima. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan LKPD berbasis etnomatematika berpengaruh signifikan terhadap peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis peserta didik. ABSTRACT This study was motivated by the low mathematical problem-solving skills of students due to a lack of innovative teaching methods and the use of media relevant to daily life. One solution proposed is the use of ethnomathematics-based worksheets. This study aims to determine the effect of using ethnomathematics-based worksheets on the mathematical problem-solving skills of eighth-grade students at MTs YP. Raudhatul Akmal. The method used is quantitative with a two-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with a control group. The research sample consisted of 66 students, comprising 35 in the experimental class and 31 in the control class. The research instruments consisted of essay tests for the pretest and posttest. The results showed an improvement in mathematical problem-solving skills in the experimental class, with the average score increasing from 44.6 to 84.6. Hypothesis testing revealed that the calculated t-value (18.152) was greater than the critical t-value (1.998), leading to the rejection of H₀ and the acceptance of H₁. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of ethnomathematics-based worksheets has a significant effect on improving students’ mathematical problem solving skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the International Community Service Program (KKNI) of Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara in strengthening literacy and character development among Indonesian diaspora children at Sanggar Belajar Gumut, Selangor, Malaysia. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation methods. The findings indicate that the KKNI program was able to improve children’s ability to read and write the Qur’an, recognize Latin letters and numbers, and foster discipline and responsibility through creative literacy activities, savings simulations, and moral guidance. In addition to cognitive impacts, the program also strengthened the moral values, empathy, and social cooperation of diaspora children. For the participating university students, the KKNI program became a transformative experience that developed empathy, leadership, and cross-cultural communication skills. These findings reinforce the concepts of Community-Based Education and Service Learning, showing that community-based and experiential learning can serve as effective means of shaping character and social spirituality. This study recommends establishing a sustainable partnership between Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara and Sanggar Belajar Gumut as a model of international community service grounded in Islamic and humanitarian values.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in mathematical communication ability and mathematical problem-solving ability of students taught using cooperative learning models of the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) type and Think Pair Share (TPS) type at SMP Nurul Hadina Patumbak. The background of this research is based on the low levels of students’ mathematical communication and problem-solving abilities, caused by the dominance of conventional teaching methods that have not provided students with sufficient opportunities to participate actively in the learning process. This study employed a quantitative approach using a Quasi-Experimental Design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The study population consisted of all eighth-grade students of SMP YPI Nurul Hadina Patumbak in the 2025/2026 academic year, comprising two classes. Samples were selected using purposive sampling, namely class VIII A (22 students) as Experimental Group I receiving the STAD learning model, and class VIII B (24 students) as Experimental Group II receiving the TPS learning model. The research instrument consisted of essay tests in the form of pretests and posttests to measure mathematical communication ability and mathematical problem-solving ability. Data were analyzed using the Independent Samples t-test and MANOVA with SPSS version 26.0, preceded by normality (ShapiroWilk) and homogeneity (Levene’s Test) prerequisite tests. The results showed that the mean posttest score for mathematical communication ability in the STAD class was 82.27 compared to 78.75 in the TPS class, while the mean posttest score for mathematical problem-solving ability in the STAD class was 84.09 compared to 80.21 in the TPS class. The independent t-test revealed significant differences in mathematical communication ability (t = 2.847; sig. = 0.007) and mathematical problem-solving ability (t = 3.124; sig. = 0.003) between the two classes. The MANOVA results also confirmed a significant simultaneous difference on both dependent variables (F = 7.084; sig. = 0.002). The N-Gain score of the STAD class (0.60) was higher than that of the TPS class (0.52), although both fell within the moderate category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the STAD cooperative learning model is more effective than the TPS model in improving the mathematical communication and problemsolving abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP Nurul Hadina Patumbak.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the Mastery Learning model on students’ problem-solving ability and mathematical literacy ability in seventh-grade junior high school students. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students totaling students. The sample used was total sampling, namely class VII-A as the experimental class consisting of  students and class VII-B as the control class consisting of  students. Data were collected through pretest and posttest instruments. The results showed that the Mastery Learning model had an effect on improving students’ problem-solving ability and mathematical literacy ability. Based on the N-Gain results, the average problem-solving ability in the experimental class was , which was higher than the control class at . Meanwhile, the mathematical literacy ability in the experimental class obtained an average score of , while the control class obtained . Hypothesis testing showed that the problem-solving ability had a one-tailed significance value of . The mathematical literacy ability showed a one-tailed significance value of . Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mastery Learning model had a significant effect on both problem-solving ability and mathematical literacy ability.
