Abstract

This study aimed to validate the Chittick titration method for measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) content using gas chromatography (GC) as the reference method. Two types of gas samples were analyzed: synthetic CO2/N2 gas with a theoretical composition of 40:60 and biogas produced by anaerobic fermentation. Analyses were conducted in parallel using both methods to compare CO2 measurements. For synthetic gas, the Chittick titration recorded an average CO2 content of 39.11%, whereas GC recorded 40.52%. For biogas, Chittick titration produced 30.16%, whereas GC measured 31.40%. The differences between the methods were 0.81% for synthetic gas and 1.55% for biogas, with relative errors of 2.00% and 3.45%, respectively. The t-test results showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) between the methods for both gas types. However, the observed deviations remained within practically acceptable limits for small-scale laboratory applications. These findings suggest that Chittick titration is a practical and cost-effective alternative for estimating CO2 content, particularly in laboratories with limited access to gas chromatography equipment. This study is expected to serve as a useful reference for educational institutions and small laboratories that are seeking to develop simple gas analysis methods with adequate validity.

Abstract

In today’s rapidly evolving academic and technological environment, English learners are expected not only to master language skills but also to think critically and communicate effectively. However, many EFL instructional practices still focus heavily on memorization, leaving students underprepared for real-world communication demands. To address this gap, alternative teaching strategies that promote both reasoning and speaking performance are needed. This study investigates the impact of structured debate instruction on the speaking and critical thinking skills of EFL undergraduate students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, 26 fourth-semester English education students participated in a five-meeting intervention. Their performances were assessed using rubrics adapted from the IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, paired samples t-tests. The results showed significant improvement in both speaking and critical thinking skills (p < .001). Among the rubric indicators, inference and fluency showed the highest post-test scores, while deduction and grammatical accuracy showed the lowest. These findings suggest that debate can be an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing spontaneous reasoning and communicative clarity in EFL settings, while also highlighting areas that may require additional support.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of English movie subtitles on grammar acquisition among English language learners. The study, conducted using a within-subjects design, involved 28 eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tenggarong Seberang during the 2025/2026 school year. The participants watched the same English movie twice-once with subtitles and once without subtitles-using a balanced sequence and a one week washout period to reduce carryover effects. Grammar proficiency, specifically focusing on simple present tense, simple past tense, and present continuous tense, was assessed through an expert-validated multiple-choice test administered as a pre-test and two post-tests. Data were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ grammar scores after watching with subtitles was 79.00, while the mean score after watching without subtitles was 78.11. The p values for both post-tests were below 0.05 (p = 0.001), leading to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). These findings indicate that subtitles play an important role in improving grammar acquisition, which confirms that subtitled movies are an effective tool for improving grammar skills among EFL students.

Abstract

The need for artificial intelligence-based tools like ChatGPT is rising among EFL students in scientific writing, as these technologies enhance the efficiency and clarity of their written work. This study underscores the detrimental effects of over dependence on these tools, particularly regarding students' critical thinking skills, creativity, and academic integrity. Data was acquired by successively implementing a mixed-methods strategy, which involved delivering questionnaires to 60 students from the English Education program, followed by semi-structured interviews with chosen responders. Quantitative results indicate that although ChatGPT assists in generating ideas and enhancing grammar, its utilization frequently diminishes analytical depth, undermines the writer's authentic voice, and heightens the likelihood of plagiarism. Qualitative findings validated these results, as students articulated apprehensions regarding diminished creativity, drive to learn, and independent thought. This study finds that although ChatGPT might serve as a valuable resource, excessive dependence on it may impede the cultivation of students' intellectual faculties and ethical standards. Consequently, educational institutions must to establish explicit norms and promote the utilization of technology in a critical and ethical fashion. This study addresses a research deficiency by highlighting the adverse effects of AI utilization on EFL students' academic writing, a topic that has not been extensively explored previously.

Abstract

This study explores university students’ perceptions of AI integration in academic English writing using a mixed-methods approach grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur, it involved 65 questionnaire respondents and five interviewees. Findings revealed that students found AI tools useful for grammar correction, idea generation, and efficiency. However, concerns emerged regarding over-reliance, reduced critical thinking, and limited motivational impact. The study highlights that while AI tools are perceived as beneficial, their adoption lacks affective engagement, especially in contexts with minimal digital literacy training. Originality lies in combining TAM with students’ emotional and contextual experiences in Indonesia, a perspective underrepresented in existing literature. The study recommends structured, reflective pedagogy to support ethical and autonomous AI use in writing.

Abstract

One of the primary objectives in decarbonization is the separation of CO₂ from industrial gas mixtures, particularly in application such as biogas purification and flue gas treatment. A dual-layer crossflow membrane module was utilized under both circulation and batch operating modes with a 30% DEA solution. This study investigates the influence of solvent flow velocity on CO₂ separation performance using a hollow fiber membrane contactor with a 30% DEA solvent. the process was evaluated under two operating modes: batch and solvent circulation. Key variables measured include the solvent flow rate (40–160 mL/min), operating temperature (30–50°C), and sweep gas flow rate (100–300 mL/min). The results indicate that under continuous operation with a solvent flow rate of 160 mL/min, a temperature of 30°C, and a sweep gas flow rate of 100 mL/min, 50.42% of the CO₂ was successfully removed. In contrast, the batch system, under identical conditions achieved only a 27.8% removal rate. The superior performance in circulation mode is attributed to the continuous renewal of the solvent, which sustains a stable concentration gradient and minimizes mass transfer resistance. These findings underscore the potential of membrane-based systems with optimized solvent circulation for efficient and stable CO₂ capture in industrial applications.

Abstract

Neutral Buffer Formalin 10% is commonly used to fix tissue whose structure will be observed. The observation is carried out to diagnose the disease. Poor fixation results will affect further tissue processing. The right concentration and fixation time will also produce quality tissue preparations and the right diagnosis. This study determined the quality of the hematoxylin-eosin staining results in the mouse kidney fixation process with variations in NBF concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. This research method is observational by fixing the mouse kidney organ in NBF with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% for 24 hours at room temperature. The results of the study are in the form of scores, which are then processed using the Kruskal-Wallis Test. Based on the total scoring results, NBF 10% is the best concentration. The result of the Kruskal-Wallis test is p ≤ 0.05, which means there is a significant difference, and the Posthoc test result is that the NBF concentration of 15% is a concentration that has no significant difference with the control. While NBF 5% and 20% have significant differences from the NBF 10% control. Thus, NBF 10% is the best concentration, and NBF 15% has better assessment results than NBF 5% and 20%. Keywords: Fixation, Neutral Buffer Formalin, Hematoxylin Eosin
