Abstract

Hypertension is theoretically influenced by several risk factors. The first risk factors are those that cannot be changed such as age, gender, and genetics. Modifiable risk factors include education, knowledge, behavior, and attitude. This study aims to identify factors that contribute to hypertension in Bangun Sari Village, Datuk Tanah Datar Sub-district. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional analytic design. The study population consisted of all residents of Bangun Sari Village, with a total population of 4,099 people and 1,148 households. The sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique, with the Lameshow formula, resulting in 94 respondents. Data were collected through observation sheets. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between age, knowledge, behavior, attitude, and occupation with the incidence of hypertension (with a p-value of 0.001 for all variables except education). There was a statistically significant association between employment status and the incidence of hypertension (p-value = 0.002). However, no significant association was found between education level and the incidence of hypertension (p-value = 0.501). Therefore, there is a statistically significant relationship between age, knowledge, behavior, attitude, and occupation with the incidence of hypertension, but there is no significant relationship between education level with the incidence of hypertension in Bangun Sari Village.

Abstract

This research aims to explore behavioral patterns and environmental conditions of households related to waste management, sanitation and cleanliness in a community. The research method was carried out using a questionnaire which was distributed directly to households, asking about activities such as waste disposal, sanitation of toddler feces, organic waste management, and disease prevention practices such as fighting mosquito bites. Apart from that, the questionnaire also evaluates the condition of the bedroom, kitchen, family room, and the main water source used. The research results show that although most households have systems for collecting waste water and adequate sanitation, there is still a tendency to dispose of waste directly into sewers or rivers. Even though the majority of households have a closed waste collection system, there are also those who still use open areas. Waste management is generally carried out by transporting it by officers or burning it, although there are still those who throw it in prohibited places. Prevention of diseases transmitted through mosquito bites is generally done by using anti-mosquito medication and regularly draining water reservoirs. Ventilation and lighting conditions in the house vary, but most are considered adequate. The majority of households rely on refillable water and drilled wells as the main water source, with an average water consumption of between 200 and 350 liters per day. This research provides a clear picture of household habits and environmental conditions, which is an important basis for developing sanitation and environmental improvement programs in the communities concerned.

Abstract

Adolescent girls are a group that is vulnerable to nutritional problems. The nutritional status index for female adolescents aged 13–15 years in Medan City is 8,12% undernutrition and 22,29% overnutrition. This figure is higher than the nutritional status of North Sumatra, which is 7,3% undernourished and 17,7% overnourished. This study aims to determine the nutritional status of adolescent girls at YPAK PTPN III Sei Karang Middle School. This type of research is quantitative descriptive research with a cross-sectional study design, which means that data is collected simultaneously or all at once with a sample size of 50 people. The results showed that the BMI of 40 respondents (80%) had normal nutritional status, 6 people were undernourished (12%), 3 people were overnourished (6%), and 1 person was obese (2%). The upper arm circumference of respondents was normal (23,5–28,5 cm) 35 people (70%), malnourished (<23,5) 11 people (22%) and overnourished (>28,5 cm) 4 people (8%). From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the majority of adolescent girls have good nutritional status.

Abstract

ntroduction: Traditional postpartum care practices remain an integral aspect of maternal and child health in indigenous communities. Mararang tradition is a postpartum care tradition that continues to be widely practiced among Batak postpartum mothers, as it is believed to accelerate maternal and infant recovery through heat therapy. . This study aims to examine the historical evolution of the mararang tradition, its cultural significance, and its implications for maternal and infant health. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the experiences of postpartum mothers practicing the mararang tradition. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with postpartum mothers, their husbands, traditional leaders, and healthcare providers in North Sumatra Province. Source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and data analysis were applied in this research. Thematic and content analyses were conducted to explore key dimensions of health beliefs, communication, and the transformation of the mararang tradition over time. Results: Participants ascribed thermal balance, comfort, and social support to mararang, while acknowledging potential risks from heat and smoke. Communication between families and midwives produced adaptive forms (e.g., moderated heat, improved ventilation, time?limited sessions), balancing cultural continuity with safety. We synthesise a conceptual model showing how explanatory beliefs, family authority, and professional guidance co?produce negotiated care. Conclusion: Mararang persists through culturally safe adaptations facilitated by respectful dialogue; practical safeguards (distance from heat source, ventilation, exclusion post?caesarean) can be embedded within routine postpartum care. Programmes should integrate culturally anchored counselling and risk?mitigation protocols, enabling context?sensitive maternal and newborn care.

Abstract

Dali Ni Horbo, a traditional buffalo milk-based product from the Batak Toba community in North Sumatra, represents a culturally significant and nutritionally rich food. Despite its heritage value, its traditional form limits its appeal and market potential. This study aims to develop dali ni horbo into stick snacks, offering a modern variation that retains its cultural essence and health benefits while enhancing marketability. Conducted in Toba Regency from July to November 2024, this research involved 20 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in culinary entrepreneurship. A mixed-method approach was utilized, encompassing interviews to gather perceptions of dali ni horbo organoleptic properties and innovation potential, alongside sensory evaluation to assess attributes including color, texture, and taste. The results indicate high acceptance of the new product, with texture (mean score: 4.15) and taste (3.95) identified as strengths. However, improvements are necessary in aroma freshness and saltiness to align with broader consumer preferences. The study highlights Dali Ni Horbo's potential as a nutritious snack, leveraging its high protein and calcium content to address nutritional deficiencies. Moreover, this innovation supports local economic empowerment by creating opportunities for MSMEs and fostering sustainable practices in buffalo milk processing. In conclusion, transforming dali ni horbo into stick snacks bridges traditional culinary heritage and modern innovation, offering economic, cultural, and nutritional benefits. Recommendations include optimizing flavor profiles, diversifying products, and enhancing market access through strategic partnerships with government and private sectors to scale production and expand distribution. Keywords: Buffalo Milk, Cultural Innovation, Dali Ni Horbo, Sensory Evaluation.
