Abstract

This study explores the preferences, potential opportunities, and challenges associated with the implementation of AI in English language instruction in higher education. Mix method was adopted in this study, by using a questionnaire and semi-structure interview to collect data. 15 English lecturers with approximately 5-10 years of teaching experiences involved in the sample, and 5 of them were interviewed. The result shows that preferences in AI-Implemented English teaching within higher education are multifaceted. Lecturers often prefer AI systems that seamlessly augment their teaching methodologies rather than replace them. Additionally, preferences also extend to the number of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, ELSA Speak, smalltool.ai, paraphrase.io, and language generation systems, etc., being prominent choices. Furthermore, AI transforms English language teaching by personalizing student learning, providing modern teaching and learning tools, delivering timely and objective performance feedback, accelerating core literacy skills, creating immersive virtual reality simulations, and enhancing language acquisition. However, these potential opportunities must be balanced against challenges like cost, data security, and the potential dehumanization of education. As AI continues to evolve, a thoughtful and adaptable approach to its implementation is paramount to harness its full potential while preserving the integrity of higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the cognitive and pedagogical mechanisms of AI-integrated bilingual English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction, transcending traditional technology adoption viewpoints to elucidate how instructional aids influence learning outcomes. The research examined the impact of AI Pedagogical Support and Bilingual Scaffolding on ESP Learning Performance, mediated by Student Engagement and Academic Self-Efficacy. A quantitative explanatory cross-sectional approach was utilized, involving 312 undergraduate ESP students participating in an AI-assisted bilingual English for Educational Technology course at an Indonesian institution. Data were gathered using a validated 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire assessing five latent constructs and analyzed via PLS-SEM with SmartPLS 4, encompassing reliability, validity, structural, mediation, and predictive model evaluations. The results indicated that AI Pedagogical Support was a significant predictor of Student Engagement (β = .41) and Academic Self-Efficacy (β = .36), whereas Bilingual Scaffolding significantly predicted Student Engagement (β = .29) and Academic Self-Efficacy (β = .31). Both mediators substantially impacted ESP Learning Performance, resulting in R² = .62, with complementing partial mediation validated by strong indirect effects. The findings indicate that AI enhances ESP outcomes mainly by influencing learner cognition, confidence, and pedagogically facilitated bilingual support, thereby providing a significant theoretical contribution to a cognitive–pedagogical ecosystem model and practical recommendations for the redesign of AI-integrated ESP curricula in higher education.

Abstract

In multilingual higher education settings, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction necessitates pedagogical frameworks that can tackle language obstacles and the rising demand for AI-enhanced learning; nonetheless, empirical data on the amalgamation of bilingual pedagogy and AI is still scarce, especially within English for Educational Technology programs. This study investigated the effectiveness of the Bilingual–AI Pedagogical Framework (BAIP Model) in English for Educational Technology programs, focusing on the impact of bilingual scaffolding and AI pedagogical support on student learning outcomes in multilingual higher education settings. The study investigated the effects of multilingual scaffolding and AI-assisted pedagogy on student engagement, academic self-efficacy, and learning performance, both directly and indirectly. A quantitative explanatory cross-sectional design was employed, encompassing 218 undergraduate students from both public and private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire evaluating five latent domains and analysed by PLS-SEM in SmartPLS 4, with initial screening performed in SPSS 29. The results indicated that bilingual scaffolding was a significant predictor of student engagement (β = .42) and learning performance (β = .16), whereas AI pedagogical assistance had the most substantial impact on academic self-efficacy (β = .47) and learning performance (β = .28). Mediation analysis substantiated the notable indirect impacts of student involvement (β = .13) and academic self-efficacy (β = .17), with the model accounting for 61% of the variance in learning performance (R² = .61). This study not only validates these structural correlations but also presents the BAIP Model as a cohesive instructional framework that amalgamates bilingual pedagogy and AI-assisted learning into a singular explanatory model for ESP education. This study theoretically expands the previous literature by illustrating that bilingual scaffolding and AI pedagogical support serve as complimentary processes that collectively improve engagement, self-efficacy, and learning performance in multilingual higher education settings.

Abstract

Academic writing is essential in higher education, especially for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners who need to adhere to academic and publication standards. This research was carried out in the English Education Department of a public university in Indonesia, involving 40 undergraduate students aged 19 to 22 with intermediate English competence. Employing a mixed-methods quasi-experimental design, two intact classrooms were allocated distinct instructional methodologies during an eight-week period: one engaged in process-based teaching, while the other participated in product-based teaching. Quantitative analysis utilizing paired and independent sample t-tests indicated that the process-based group exhibited substantially larger improvement (M = 78.65, SD = 4.88) compared to the product-based group (M = 73.40, SD = 5.12), t(38) = 3.17, p < 0.01. The process-oriented approach also resulted in enhanced coherence, vocabulary, and structure. Qualitative findings from student interviews and reflections corroborated these outcomes, indicating enhanced engagement, motivation, and confidence among process-oriented learners. The results demonstrate that recursive writing techniques and iterative feedback significantly promote enduring writing advancement. The study advocates for the incorporation of process- and product-oriented components to improve EFL academic writing instruction in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

The implementation of deep learning in Indonesia’s education policy emphasizes mindful learning, yet its manifestation in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms remains underexplored. This study investigates how mindful learning is manifested in EFL classrooms and how translanguaging pedagogy facilitates learning awareness and meaning-making. A qualitative case study was conducted with three English teachers and tenth-grade students at a senior high school in Manado, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with three teachers and three students, and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal two interconnected components of mindful learning: learning awareness, developed through active noticing, self-monitoring, and reflective engagement; and meaning-making, constructed through interpretation, negotiation of meaning, and collaborative knowledge construction. The study further suggests that translanguaging functions not merely as a linguistic strategy but as a pedagogical mechanism that provides linguistic flexibility and cognitive scaffolding, enabling students to engage more consciously and meaningfully in learning. Based on these findings, the study proposes a conceptual model positioning translanguaging pedagogy as a bridge connecting linguistic flexibility, learning awareness, and meaning-making to foster mindful learning in EFL classrooms.
