Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing academic pressure experienced by fourth-semester university students in completing end-of-semester assignments. Academic demands, numerous deadlines, limited time management, and high expectations often trigger stress, anxiety, and decreased learning motivation among students. This condition may affect students’ emotional well-being and academic performance if not properly addressed. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the forms of academic pressure experienced by fourth-semester students and the factors influencing their difficulties in completing final semester assignments. The method used in this study is field research with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with several fourth-semester students selected purposively. The data analysis technique employed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students experience various forms of academic pressure such as anxiety, fatigue, overthinking, lack of confidence, sleep disturbances, and difficulty managing study time. Several factors causing academic pressure include the accumulation of assignments, demands for good academic achievement, poor time management, limited social support, and personal problems experienced by students. In dealing with these pressures, students attempt to overcome them by arranging study schedules, seeking support from friends and family, taking short breaks, and improving self-motivation.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the communication barriers experienced by a student from Riau who is studying in West Sumatra and faces difficulties adapting to the Minangkabau cultural environment. Differences in language and communication patterns between the student’s original culture and the surrounding community have caused feelings of insecurity, fear of making mistakes while speaking, and a tendency to withdraw from broader social interactions. Therefore, an in-depth study is needed to understand the dynamics of cross-cultural communication and the counseling strategies used to assist the counselee in the adaptation process. The purpose of this study is to analyze the communication barriers experienced by the counselee and to examine the application of Transactional Analysis counseling in overcoming cross-cultural adaptation problems. The method used is a qualitative descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and case analysis, then analyzed descriptively to identify the causes, impacts, and appropriate counseling interventions. The findings of this study indicate that the counselee experienced difficulties in communication due to differences in language, limited understanding of Minangkabau culture, lack of self-confidence, and fear of misunderstanding conversations with older people in the surrounding environment. These conditions led the counselee to interact more frequently with peers from the same cultural background and become less active in wider social settings. Through the Transactional Analysis counseling approach, the counselor helped the counselee recognize ineffective communication patterns and strengthen the Adult ego state to become more rational, calm, and confident in social interactions. The counseling intervention was carried out through communication training, positive reinforcement, cultural understanding, and gradual social adaptation. The results showed positive developments in the counselee’s willingness to learn the Minangkabau language, understand local cultural habits, and begin interacting more actively with the surrounding community.Cross-Cultural Counseling, Transactional Analysis, Communication Barriers

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of cultural differences in communication on social misunderstandings among migrant students. The study uses a single-subject experimental method or Single Subject Research (SSR), with the subject being a 22-year-old student with the initials KL from Medan, who is studying at a university in Bukittinggi. Data were collected through observation, counseling interviews, and analysis of the counselee’s behavior. The intervention was carried out using the Transactional Analysis approach with techniques of providing information, providing examples, and giving advice. The results show that cultural differences in communication, particularly in the use of the word “kau,” caused social misunderstandings between the counselee and peers in the Minangkabau environment. This condition led to strained interpersonal relationships, feelings of guilt, social anxiety, and difficulty adjusting to the new environment. Through culturally informed counseling, the counselee began to understand the differences in communication norms, recognized the importance of adjusting word choice, and was guided to use the Adult ego state in communication. The findings indicate that understanding cultural differences in communication is essential in helping migrant students build better social relationships and reduce intercultural misunderstandings.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the communication barriers and cultural adaptation of students from Bengkulu in the Minangkabau environment. The research employs a qualitative approach with interview methods involving a research subject, RM, a 19-year-old student from Bengkulu studying at UIN Syech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed to identify patterns of communication barriers and the adaptation process experienced by the subject. The intervention applied used the Social Skills Training technique to enhance the subject’s intercultural communication competence. The findings indicate that the communication and adaptation barriers experienced by RM stem from differences in the system of linguistic norms and communication culture between regions. Lack of awareness regarding the hierarchy of language politeness and social etiquette in Minangkabau led to miscommunication, which resulted in social anxiety, reduced interaction intensity, and diminished client self-confidence. The adaptation process experienced by RM suggests that culture is dynamic and can be internalized through social contact, field experience, and responsive environmental support. Thus, culturally informed counseling assistance becomes a decisive factor in facilitating the client’s adjustment to local communication norms without sacrificing their original cultural identity. Based on the analysis, the effectiveness of cross-cultural counseling is determined by the counselor’s cultural awareness, orientation toward diversity as a resource for personal development, and the selection of intervention strategies aligned with the client’s sociocultural context. The integration of the Person-Centered Approach and Social Skills Training demonstrates empirical relevance in helping RM create a psychologically safe space for self-expression while strengthening communicative competence in accordance with Minangkabau norms. These findings confirm that cultural adaptation can proceed optimally when accompanied by professional support that is supportive, educational, and reflective.

Abstract

This article discusses the behavioral approach in handling singing behavior among Minangkabau students from a cross-cultural counseling perspective. Singing behavior is viewed as a form of self-expression, emotional release, entertainment, and habitual activity influenced by personal interests and cultural background. In Minangkabau culture, singing and artistic expression through music are generally considered normal and socially accepted behaviors. However, excessive singing without considering time, place, and social conditions may disturb the surrounding environment. This study aims to analyze the causes, impacts, and counseling interventions related to singing behavior through a qualitative case analysis focusing on a student who frequently sings in a boarding house environment. The findings indicate that singing provides positive effects such as stress reduction, emotional expression, increased self-confidence, and opportunities for talent development. Nevertheless, negative impacts include noise disturbance, discomfort for others, vocal strain, and physical fatigue. The counseling intervention combines behavioral counseling and cross-cultural counseling approaches. Behavioral counseling helps the client develop self-control and adaptive behavior patterns, while cross-cultural counseling emphasizes understanding the client’s cultural background and social values. The interventions include rapport building, psychoeducation, self-control training, and directing the client’s interests and talents into positive activities. The study concludes that counseling interventions considering cultural values and behavioral aspects can help clients express themselves positively without disturbing their social environment.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the implementation of Personal-Social Guidance and Counseling can improve the social adjustment of migrant students from Medan in the Minangkabau cultural environment. The research employs a qualitative approach with interviews and observation methods involving a subject identified as SS. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations to identify patterns of communication barriers and the adjustment process experienced by the subject. The intervention applied used a Personal-Social Guidance and Counseling approach based on Alfred Adler’s theory to help the subject develop their social adjustment abilities. The results indicate that the problems experienced by SS are closely related to the process of adjusting to a new cultural environment, differences in communication styles, and the need to be accepted within the social environment. These conditions led to feelings of inferiority, overthinking, and withdrawal behavior that affected SS’s emotional and social well-being. Through the KOPSIN approach grounded in Alfred Adler’s theory, the counseling process helped SS understand themselves, change negative thought patterns, and develop social adjustment skills, thereby improving self-confidence and interpersonal relationships. The findings affirm that the implementation of Personal-Social Guidance and Counseling, oriented toward strengthening social interest and social courage, effectively facilitates the adjustment of migrant students in the Minangkabau cultural environment without compromising their original cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the application of cross-cultural counseling improves the social adjustment of migrant students from West Java in the Minangkabau school cultural environment. The study uses a qualitative approach with interview and observation methods on the research subject, a student with the initials R.D.A, 18 years old, studying at SMA N 1 X Koto. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations to identify patterns of communication barriers and the adjustment process experienced by the subject. The intervention applied used a cross-cultural counseling approach that considers the differences in culture, language, values, customs, and habits of the counselee. The results show that the problems experienced by R.D.A are closely related to differences in language, accent, communication style, and ways of expressing emotions that affect the counselee’s ability to adapt to the social and school environment. This condition leads to low self-confidence, difficulty in social interaction, and barriers in communicating with the surrounding environment. Through the cross-cultural counseling approach, the counseling process helps R.D.A understand that cultural differences are not a weakness but part of self-identity that should be respected, as well as developing communication skills, self-adjustment, and self-confidence in the new social environment. The findings affirm that the application of cross-cultural counseling based on empathy, tolerance, openness, and cultural awareness effectively facilitates the adjustment of migrant students in a culturally diverse school environment without sacrificing their original cultural identity.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multicultural country characterized by diversity in culture, language, and social communication patterns. Cultural differences in higher education settings often create communication barriers and adjustment difficulties for students from other regions. This study aims to examine the dynamics of cross-cultural counseling for Malay students in a Minangkabau cultural environment and to understand the forms of communication barriers and social adaptation processes experienced by these students. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research subject is a Malay student pursuing education in a Minangkabau cultural environment. Data collection techniques included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, while data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that students face communication barriers due to differences in language, communication styles, and social customs, leading to feelings of awkwardness, shyness, and low self-confidence. Cross-cultural counseling helps students improve their interpersonal communication skills, understand cultural differences positively, and strengthen their social adaptation skills through empathy techniques, role-playing, and cultural psychoeducation. In conclusion, cross-cultural counseling plays a crucial role in helping students build harmonious social relationships in a multicultural environment.

Abstract

College students have various academic and social responsibilities that require good time management skills to maintain a balance between their academic, organizational, and social lives. However, many students still struggle with time management, leading to academic procrastination, late assignment submissions, and low self-discipline. This study aims to determine the importance of student time management from a cross-cultural counseling perspective and to understand the factors influencing poor time management among students. The study employs a qualitative approach using a case study of a student identified as DV who struggles to balance time between classes, organizations, and social activities. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that poor time management is influenced by procrastination habits, the influence of the social environment, and a collective culture that emphasizes togetherness. A behavioral counseling approach using self-management techniques helped the client improve self-discipline and the ability to set priorities. Thus, good time management is crucial in supporting students’ academic success and social balance.

Abstract

Migrant students often face difficulties adjusting to new social environments, particularly in managing personal finances. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of cross-cultural counseling based on the Transactional Analysis (TA) approach in addressing financial management problems among migrant students with a Melayu Riau cultural background. The method used is a Single Case Experimental Design (SCED) with an A-B design, where phase A represents the baseline condition prior to intervention and phase B represents the counseling intervention phase. The research subject is one student with the initials DD, aged 19 years, from Taluak Kuantan, Riau. Data were collected through pre-intervention assessment interviews, behavioral observation during counseling sessions, and post-intervention follow-up interviews. Behavioral analysis was conducted using the Behavioral Pattern (PTL) framework comprising Pancadaya, Likuladu, and Masidu components. Results show positive behavioral changes following the intervention: the client was able to manage finances more systematically, understood financial priorities, and maintained an active social life without compromising financial stability. These findings indicate that TA-based cross-cultural counseling is effective in enhancing self-control and financial awareness among migrant students.
