Abstract

At the micro or local level, many Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs are beneficial to communities. Most CSR initiatives focus on the economic aspect through income-generating activities. Previous researchers have extensively discussed the implementation processes and benefits of CSR programs for communities. However, a common challenge in the implementation of these programs is the difficulty faced by organizers in engaging target groups, due to factors such as family communication and internal references. This issue has attracted researchers to explore how communication influences decision-making regarding participation among beneficiaries or target groups of CSR programs, particularly in ensuring that the economic objectives set for target families can be successfully achieved. This study employs a qualitative method, utilizing structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) involving 120 informants from CSR target groups considered representative. The findings indicate that the head of the household, as the primary target of the CSR program, communicates with his spouse and extended family when making decisions. The involvement of individuals outside the extended family is based on considerations of trust. The outcomes of these communication processes—among the head of the family, spouse, extended family, and trusted individuals—are significant in shaping a family’s decision to participate in a CSR program. Understanding who serves as a source of influence and inspiration in encouraging families to engage in CSR activities can enhance participation and interest among target communities, ultimately contributing to the success of the program.

Abstract

This study explores the emergence of a new culture within the radio broadcasting industry, focusing on transformations in radio programs' production, distribution, and consumption. The new culture refers to shifts driven by digital transformation, significantly altering media practices. While previous studies have largely examined digitalization in mainstream or commercial media, little attention has been given to its impact on government-owned and community-based radio stations. To address this gap, the study employs a qualitative case study approach, examining two local broadcasting institutions in Indonesia: Serang Gawe FM, a Local Public Broadcasting Institution (LPBI; Lembaga Penyiaran Publik Lokal or LPPL) operated by the Serang Regency Government, and TiRTA FM, a student-run community radio station at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and limited participatory observation, and analyzed through coding and thematic interpretation. Findings reveal that integrating internet-based technologies and social media has introduced new cultural practices in broadcasting. These include using social media to promote programs, conduct live streams, and distribute content via audio streaming platforms, resulting in greater audience reach and enhanced interactivity. The digital transformation has redefined the roles of broadcasters and listeners, fostering more participatory and dynamic communication. Furthermore, it enables local radio stations to connect with audience segments beyond the limitations of traditional FM signal coverage. This study contributes to ongoing discussions on media convergence and digital transformation by demonstrating that these developments are both technological and cultural. It emphasizes the importance of institutional adaptability and highlights the evolving relationship between media producers and audiences in the digital era.

Abstract

Communication networks and systems in rural areas often experience obstacles, especially during times of crisis due to disasters due to infrastructure damage and other disruptions that result in limited communication and information channels. This study aims to reveal how community radio contributes to the communication resilience system in facing crises in rural areas. The community radio referred to in this study is the RaSi FM Community Radio in Cisewu Village, Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia. This research is a qualitative study using a case study approach. Researchers obtained data through in-depth interviews involving community radio managers and local residents and participant observation. The data analyzed included interview results, broadcast content, and other data deemed relevant to the study. The research findings indicate that community radio can function as an alternative communication channel that can replace other communication tools that experience obstacles and disruptions such as internet connections, telecommunication network interruptions, especially during crises such as natural disasters. Community radio provides verifiable information about the current conditions for both the surrounding community and those still within the limited service coverage area. In addition to the information provided, the presence of community radio encourages social coordination within the community and produces a collective response to various potential risks that may arise. These findings suggest that redundancy through community media can strengthen communication resilience in rural crisis systems.

Abstract

AI is a system designed to help work become more effective and efficient. In the broadcasting industry, AI is mentioned as having potential that deserves attention. This study examined the adoption of AI in Indonesia’s broadcasting industry, addressing the research gap in emerging markets by analysing its operational impacts and ethical risks. Through a descriptive qualitative, alongside systematic reviews of Scopus, Web of Science, and Garuda databases, this research identified how Indonesia’s unique media landscape shapes AI integration. The findings revealed that while AI enhances efficiency, its ethical challenges necessitate localised solutions, leading to a proposed ‘Dual Accountability Model’, which reduces violations by 31% by balancing automation with human oversight. These results urge policymakers to develop KPI-certified AI governance frameworks and provide broadcasters with strategies for the ethical implementation of AI, offering a replicable model for ASEAN nations navigating similar technological transitions.

Abstract

Rapid deployment of digital learning technologies in the higher education sector has created immense amounts of educational data that could be leveraged to enhance student success and institutional effectiveness. Nevertheless, student dropout, poor academic performance, and lack of retention continue to plague universities across the world. In most cases, identification of academically struggling students is often late since existing models are largely reactive. Therefore, there is need for development of advanced learning analytics models that are able to forecast student performance in higher education institutions. The current study seeks to create an artificial neural network (ANN)-based learning analytics framework to predict student success in higher education institutions. A predictive analytical approach based on quantitatively evaluating a sample of 1,000 undergraduate students was used in the current study. Various attributes used to evaluate the students included demographic information, academic performance, LMS activity, and learning behaviors. Learning analytics indicators used in the model included previous GPA, attendance rate, assignment completion rate, quiz scores, logins per week, learning hours per week, discussion engagement, engagement index, interaction scores, and learning consistency. In the analysis, the model was validated and tested against accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, ROC-AUC, confusion matrix, and cross validation tests. Results showed that accuracy, precision, recall, F1-Score, and ROC-AUC of the ANN model were 92.8%, 91.4%, 93.7%, 92.5%, and 0.96, respectively. Based on these outcomes, previous GPA, attendance rate, assignment completion rate, and various engagement indicators were found to be the strongest predictors of student success in college. On the theoretical front, contributions of this study include AI-assisted student performance and behavior prediction. Practically, a sophisticated warning system was developed in this study to assist in effective academic advisement and planning for student retention and academic improvement strategies.
