Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cognitive responses and processing fluency of audiences toward intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching code-switching on the YouTube channel "Arab Podcasts". Employing a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected via Stimulated Recall Interviews with three selected participants (aged 21–35) and analyzed using Greenwald's Cognitive Response Theory and the Processing Fluency framework. The findings indicate that inter-sentential code-switching elicits a dual response: it causes focus distraction due to violated language expectations in some audiences, yet enhances affective comfort in others. Intra-sentential code-switching triggers the highest cognitive load, leading to initial disfluency; however, this can be mitigated through visual aids. Conversely, tag-switching demonstrates the highest level of processing fluency and functions effectively as a discourse marker. It is concluded that tag-switching serves as the safest instructional strategy, whereas other types of code-switching require visual support to prevent cognitive overload. These results provide practical guidelines for educators to balance linguistic use with cognitive comfort in digital learning environments.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi pedagogis guru bahasa Arab di Kota Yogyakarta melalui penerapan Design Didactic Research (DDR) yang terintegrasi dengan teknologi pembelajaran digital. Kegiatan melibatkan 20 guru dari berbagai madrasah aliyah dan sekolah menengah dengan pengalaman mengajar 5–15 tahun. Pelaksanaan program meliputi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan modul DDR, pelatihan blended learning, pendampingan implementasi di kelas, serta evaluasi hasil. Analisis data dilakukan secara kuantitatif menggunakan paired sample t-test dan kualitatif melalui observasi serta jurnal refleksi guru. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan kompetensi pedagogis guru dari rata-rata 67,35 menjadi 83,40, disertai keterlibatan siswa yang mencapai 88% pada aktivitas kelas. Selain peningkatan kompetensi individu, kegiatan ini juga memperkuat jejaring profesional guru melalui kolaborasi MGMP Bahasa Arab dan komunitas praktik pascapelatihan. Program ini berdampak positif terhadap perubahan paradigma pembelajaran menjadi lebih reflektif dan berpusat pada siswa, serta direkomendasikan untuk direplikasi di wilayah lain sebagai model pengembangan profesional guru bahasa Arab yang berkelanjutan dan berbasis riset.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze idiom translation strategies in the Netflix subtitles of the film Habibie and Ainun and to compare them with the machine translation generated by DeepSeek-V3.2 based on Baker’s (1992) classification. Idioms expressions are one of the most problematic areas in audiovisual translation due to their literalness and cultural embodiment. Descriptive qualitative is used as the research methods in this research with 22 Indonesian idioms classified according to Fernando (1996) to which a comparative analysis was made investigate the use and diffusion of translation strategies, namely idioms of similar meaning and form, idioms of similar meaning but different form, paraphrase, and omission. The results suggest that the paraphrase strategy is also the dominant one across both human and machine translations, reflecting a stronger emphasis on achieving meaning understanding rather than idiomatic form. The strategies of idioms of similar meaning and form and idioms of similar meaning but different form in the TL are tendencies rather than strict rules, and they vary from case to case depending on the existence of idiomatic equivalents in Arabic, while omission is not identified this indicates that the source idiom are preserved for coherence. The results also show that human translators consider the narrative setting and emotional meaning, while machine translation focuses mainly on semantic equivalence. This study offers to Indonesian–Arabic translation studies and demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based translation systems in controlling contextual and culture-specific idioms.
