Abstract

Civic Education in higher education is a strategic factor in influencing civic awareness, national commitment, tolerance and character of the students. The actuality of Civic Education is, however, in a way often perceived as a normative and less relevant course because the teaching materials available are not yet rich enough contextually, participatory and connected with the social realities of the students. This paper seeks to explore how important it will be to come up with teaching materials on Civic Education that will be accompanied by the values of religious moderation especially national devotion and tolerance. This research utilized a qualitative research design using case study as its design. Data were gathered via interviews, observation, documentation and field notes and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which involves data reduction, displaying data and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the current Civic Education instructional resources already include the necessary civic issues, including the national identity, democracy, rights and duties of the citizens, the life of a constitutional system, and the multicultural society. Though, these materials remain mostly normative and descriptive, are not adequately tied to learning experiences of students, and have not systematically incorporated values of religious moderation into learning objectives, activities, and assessment. The study concludes that teaching materials in Civic Education should be re-oriented to contextual, participatory and value integrated learning. This kind of development will help reinforce the civic character of students, critical consciousness, devotion to the nation and even tolerance within the multicultural Indonesian society.

Abstract

In an era in which information flows freely across countless digital channels, understanding how mass media shapes young people's political consciousness has become increasingly vital. This study explores the intricate relationship between mass media—both traditional and digital—and political education among the youth, drawing from democratic theory and media literacy frameworks. Through a comprehensive examination of existing literature, we uncover a fascinating paradox: while today's young generation enjoys unprecedented access to political information and opportunities for civic discourse, they simultaneously face formidable challenges, including media manipulation, echo chambers, and a concerning erosion of trust in news institutions. Our findings reveal that the effectiveness of mass media as an educational tool is not straightforward. Rather, it is mediated by critical factors such as media literacy skills, socioeconomic contexts, and the quality of democratic institutions within which young people operate. In contexts where Indonesian youth navigate their political identities—from bustling cities to remote villages—these dynamics play out in unique ways that deserve careful attention. This research makes a compelling case that effective political education in the digital age requires more than just access to information. It demands integrated approaches that combine formal education, robust media literacy programs, and collaborative efforts among media organisations, educational institutions, and civic groups. The goal is not merely to create informed citizens, but to nurture a generation of young people who can think critically meaningfully in democratic life. As we stand at this critical juncture, the choices we make today about media systems, education, and democratic culture will shape the quality of citizenship for generations to come.

Abstract

Textbooks have an important role to promoting gender equality. Apart from being a source of learning that transmits knowledge, textbooks also form students' values, worldviews and gender roles. This research aims to find out whether the Civic Education textbooks used in the high school in this study have a gender equality perspective. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Collecting data in this research using interview techniques, documentation studies, and literature studies. The data analysis using triangulation. Respondents in this study were Civic Education teachers and class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Kandanghaur and SMA Negeri 1 Sindang. The results of the study showed that the Civic Education textbooks paid little attention to gender equality which appeared on the cover which did not show equal gender representation; textbook materials and illustrations that have not paid attention to gender equality. Based on the results of this research, it is recommended to integrate gender equality into Civic Education textbooks both in terms of content and illustrations, so that the role of Civic Education as democratic education upholds human rights, including the right to be treated equally without discrimination on any basis, including on the basis of gender can be realized.

Abstract

Teachers often face several challenges in developing instructional materials, which can impact graduate profiles. The objective of this training is to enhance graduate profiles by implementing AI-based deep learning for social studies teachers. The community service program was implemented using an inductive approach in two phases: direct and indirect training, targeting social studies teachers who are members of the Social Studies teachers’ working group (MGMP IPS) in Bandung City, West Java. The training results indicate that AI-based deep learning through chatbots can integrate the principles of mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning, thereby creating a meaningful learning experience. The success of learning depends on teachers’ attention to students’ potential to ensure an efficient learning process, support self-development, and shape character. The training was conducted continuously by encouraging Social Studies teachers to plan, implement, reflect on, and select learning models, methods, and strategies appropriate to students’ characteristics and curriculum requirements. The outcome of this training is the development of graduate profile dimensions encompassing faith, piety, citizenship, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, independence, health, and communication—all resulting from deep social studies learning oriented toward strengthening national character. Abstract

This study investigates how students at Universitas Buana Perjuangan Karawang comprehend and internalise Indonesian national identity amidst the pervasive challenges of globalisation and modernisation. In higher education, students are expected not only to master academic competencies but also to cultivate robust moral character as future custodians of the nation. Consequently, this research aims to analyse students' conceptualisation of national identity, evaluate the implementation of character education within campus life, and explore the contemporary socio-cultural challenges confronting the younger generation. Employing a qualitative methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a comprehensive literature review. The findings reveal that students possess nuanced understandings of national identity, predominantly conceptualising it in terms of the core values of Pancasila, diversity, and mutual cooperation. Furthermore, the implementation of character education demonstrates positive outcomes when integrated into extracurricular activities, student organisations, and community service programmes. Nevertheless, substantial challenges persist, primarily driven by foreign cultural hegemony, rising individualism, and identity crises exacerbated by the digital era. Ultimately, this study recommends reinforcing character education grounded in local wisdom, revitalising Pancasila values within the curriculum, and promoting digital literacy that aligns with the Indonesian national character.

Abstract

The pandemic has resulted in a learning crisis, demanding a curriculum change. A comparative analysis between the 2013 Curriculum and the Merdeka Curriculum at the Secondary School level in civic education becomes relevant to evaluate the education system's response to these challenges. This research aims to identify the differences and similarities in the approaches of both curricula towards civic education and understand their potential in addressing potential learning disparities and inequalities arising from the pandemic. Focusing on the values of Pancasila and intracurricular learning, this study provides profound insights into the adaptability and effectiveness of the curriculum during a crisis. The results are expected to offer guidance for the development of a responsive and inclusive curriculum in facing the dynamics of learning amid global challenges.
