Abstract

Air Terbit Village has a fisheries business unit known as Pembinaan Ikan Lele Mang Tata, which focuses on producing catfish seeds. This business unit applies a natural method in spawning Mutiara catfish to obtain seeds. One of the obstacles faced by this business unit is the lack of seed production. This is due to the use of natural spawning methods, traditional management, and suboptimal marketing. To increase seed production, it is necessary to identify quality broodstock and apply artificial spawning technology using funnel media. Community service activities aim to introduce artificial catfish spawning technology using funnel media to increase seed production and help overcome the challenges faced by farmers.

Abstract

Pasta feed is one of the alternatives to replace natural food. However, the problem is that the digestibility of post larvae is still low. One approach to improve the digestibility of fish larvae of Asian redtail catfish is by giving probiotics. The research aimed to evaluate the addition of probiotics to pasta feed on fish larvae growth and survival rate in Asian redtail catfish. This research was conducted on Mei to Juni 2022 at the Fish Hatchery and Breeding Laboratory, Fisheries and Marine Faculty, Universitas Riau. The treatments in this research, namely P0 (0 mL/kg feed), P1 (10 mL/kg feed), P2 (15 mL/kg feed), P3 (20 mL/kg feed) and P4 (25 mL/kg feed). Seeds 4 days after hatching were reared in the aquarium with 15 L at stocking density 2 larvae/l for 21 days. The parameters observed were length and weight growth, specific growth rate, and survival. Feed was given 4 times/day at 40% of biomass. The result showed that the larvae fed 10 ml probiotic/kg feed had the highest growth rate (0,13 g, 1,56 cm, and 17,86 %/day), and the highest survival rate was 85,56%. The research results showed that adding probiotics in the pasta feed increased length and weight growth, specific growth rate, and survival of fish larvae Asian redtail catfish.

Abstract

Osteochilus melanopleurus can be found in the Siak and Kampar Rivers. The Kampar Rivers waters are better than that of the Siak River and it affects the growth of the fish. The growth pattern is reflected in the pattern of otolith growth rings. The research aims to understand the pattern of otolith growth rings of the O. melanopleurus from both rivers has been conducted from January to February 2021. There were 55 fishes captured (28 males and 27 females). The otolith was taken using tweezers and shaved manually using a soft grindstone. The dark growth ring pattern was investigated using a binocular microscope. Results showed the size of fish captured was 220 to 360 mm from Siak River and 310 to 370 mm from Kampar River. In the fish with the same standard length, the size of the otolith from the Siak River is heavier and longer than that of the Kampar River, which means that fish growth from the Kampar River is better than that of the Siak River. The length of an otolith from Siak River ranged from 1.875 – 3.275 mm, the width was ranged from 1.575–2.75 mm and the weight of otolith was 0.0039 – 0.0098 g, while the length of an otolith from Kampar River ranged from 2.375–3.275 mm, the width was ranged from 1.85–2.575 mm and the weight of otolith was 0.0042 –0.0076 g. The maximum number of the dark ring in the otolith from the Siak River was 4 and Kampar River was 2. The distance between the nucleus and the first dark ring of fish from both rivers was varied from 0.1–0.525 mm, and there was no special pattern. This fact indicates that the first dark ring was formed individually and they were not formed by a periodical incidents during the fish life.
