Since the 13th century singular they have been used freely to account to the lack of gender-fair pronoun in the English language. Singular they that is normally employed as a pronominal non-possessive indefinite singular pronoun, in contrast to an expression on he/she generic. This study aims to provide a linear timeline that accounts to the usage of singular they from 13th century to date. Discerns through the scope of Diachronic studies. This study offers an analysis of context with diachronic relevance. The study uses argumentative cross-examination methods, by combing previous findings conducted by researchers who had undertook and attempted to write under similar theme .The results of this study show periodical changes from 13th century to the next, implying that sociocultural changes may be reflected in linguistic changes. The article postulates some that can be interpreted as lenient acceptance for the application of singular they. This study concludes despite the constant rejection singular they are a proper substitute for the gender-neutral pronoun in the English language due to two major advantages for singular they could afford neutrality and naturalness element in comparison to neologism.

This study investigates the motivation of Indonesian postgraduate student as an autonomous learner in overseas university. This study focuses on answering a research question; (1) how the learner motivates himself for being autonomous learner. The qualitative method was used to fulfill the objective of the study. The data was collected from interview section with the student. It was transcribed and analyzed descriptively. The result shows that the student is an autonomous learner who has intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning language in overseas university. It can conclude that this study will enrich the discussion which relates to students’ motivation for being an autonomous learner especially in overseas university. This study aims to examine the use of listening strategies to facilitate the students’ listening competence and aims to examine the students’ perception about the roles of listening strategies. Using a qualitative research as the design of the research, the researcher collects the data through observation in listening classroom and interview to the university students. The result reveals that the lecturer used Flowerdew and Miller’ listening strategies, such as metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and socioaffective strategies to facilitate the students in improving their listening competence, Moreover, the students perceive that the roles of listening strategies can help them to enhance their competence and help them become more skillful in listening. This study aims to investigate pre-service EFL teachers’ way evaluating their own teachers talk, especially in questioning skill using SETT (Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk). The method used in this study is qualitative research toward four pre-service EFL teachers’ used as the research’s participants. By revealing the data, the author used teachers’ reflective journals as process for evaluation and also interview to obtain deeper perspective and feelings results of the data analysis. The findings indicated that doing the evaluation of questioning skills using SETT framework has helped their awareness of their language used in teaching, not only about the interactional features for communication but also how manage the language to assist the students to response. More importantly, they are able to use and control their language in running the classroom activities. Thus, it means that SETT has helped the teachers to achieved their personal development and awareness toward the classroom communication in holding the interaction especially in questioning skills. The research aims at investigating the implementation of task based learning conducted by the teacher in teaching writing descriptive text for junior high shool students of seven grade.The student still have problem in writing especially descriptive text. The study examine show to the teacher conducs the task based learning in teaching writing trought some step and elaborates students’ ability in writing descriptive text.the research used qualitative approach because the result of the data analyzed was in descriptive phenomenom such a word, sentence and utterence. The data is collected from observation, interview and students’ writing. The analysis of the data was conducted thought categorization, data display and drawing conclusion. The subjects of this research are an english teacher and his students of VII grade. The result of the study indicates that the implementation of task based has many weaknesses in some aspects.The consuming time in doing the task is one of the matters. Students’ use of mother tongue instead of the target language makes the implementation of task based learning does not go as expected.In reference to the findings of the study, some suggestion proposed. The english teacher should use and design task which will not consume more time,so the step in task based learning will bwe accommodated in a meeting. The student should speak in the target language and the task based learning is implemented in order to reach the aim of this approach. This study was aimed to analyse the background study on research article and put the argumentation based on the theory about critical discourse analysis related to social cognition theory. Furthermore, the researcher wanted to compare 2 article in critical discourse analysis approach. This method on this study is descriptive qualitative which is presented in the positivist views. Then the result was generalized in the relation on finding and discussion with the theory. In summary, the result showed the different ways in giving the power of the argumentation and explanation between RA1 and RA2. In conclusion, the power of argument used will lead the reader to ignore or accept on how it is become valid statement or not. The present study aims to determine the student's perception towards the use of Jeopardy Game, and also investigates how the teacher uses Jeopardy Game in English learning. This research study was used a qualitative study conducted in-state senior high school level in Surabaya. A close-ended questionnaire was used to obtain the data. The results show that Jeopardy Game makes English learning more alive, comfortable, enjoyable, fun, and interesting. It also boosts the student's motivation in learning English. Jeopardy Game also enhances the student's vocabulary knowledge, recalls the previous materials, improves the student's speaking skill and develop the student's critical thinking. This study suggests using Jeopardy Game in the learning process since many benefits in increasing the student's engagement in the classroom. Purposive behavior directly convey the students' mental process of critical thinking skill in analyzing literary work and producing composition. There is a theoretical and practical gap between the critical thinking process and products. This research descriptively designs to answer research problems. The previous study investigates the students’ written products and claims that they have a good critical thinking when they have multi references. In contrast, critical thinking is process of mental which students not only finding new information from some resources but also realizing their learning objective, identifying problems to motivate themselves to write a composition. As the results, the students who have a low level of critical thinking skill and they strongly aware of their gaps will analyze the literary work well, and a high level of critical thinking makes a power of analysis, an accurate and precise composition. Student’s mental process of critical thinking appears on the students’ process to read and cite a number of literacies, detect self-problem, encourage themselves to make a written texts based on the learning outcomes.

This study was conducted to find out the importance of enhancing literacy for enriching the academic writing capacity. The expected study is that it has significance in teaching writing to produce new awareness through literacy and also aims to influence the paradigm in writing use for social practices. The descriptive qualitative method is applied. The data are taken from four research articles on literacy dealing with academic writing. Findings and results from each research article are the data for this study. Every finding and result of research article becomes the data source to discuss. The findings show that literacy contributes towards the success in academic writing. The good academic writing does not only deal with how the one writes, but also detects whether one’s writing is the social reflection or not or respond to the social issues or not.

The verbification of proper nouns is a term that refers to the changing of the proper nouns into verbs. It has a similar term to the denominal verb. As in the word Meghan Markle which is known as the Duchess of Sussex, yet considered as a verb related to her leaving the royal family incident. This study is aimed to reveal the phenomenon of the verbification of proper nouns, the use of the verbified proper nouns, and the etymology of the verbified proper nouns, especially in English. Using content analysis as one of the qualitative methods, the data then could be collected. The result of the study shows that the verbification of proper nouns in English still existed within the conversation which then classified into several types of verbs; agent verbs, instrument verbs, located verbs. There are thirteen verbified proper nouns listed in the agent verbs, eleven verbified proper nouns listed in the instrument verbs, and three verbified proper nouns listed in the locatum verbs. Since this study could only collect a total of twenty-seven verbified proper nouns and three types of verbs, further studies are widely open to be conducted by researchers in the future.
