Abstract

The development of Indonesian and regional literature in the Archipelago is not only determined by internal conditions but also by external influences. Several years ago in Bali, an anthology of haiku in Balinese was published, which was clearly influenced by the form of haiku, traditional Japanese poetry. This article analyzes Balinese haiku collected in two anthologies, namely Bikul (Mouse, 2014) and Bubu (Fishtrapped, 2015), both by I Ketut Aryawan Kenceng. By applying a qualitative approach, this research data was collected through literature studies and interviews with poets and observers of modern literature in the Balinese language. The data were analyzed using structuralism and semiotic approaches. The results of the study show that Balinese haiku provides a cross-cultural identity (Japanese and Balinese) for modern Balinese literature. The results of this study contribute to our efforts to understand that this hybrid poem strengthens the opinion of scholars who say that Bali is an open fortress, meaning that it remains open to accepting outside influences but firmly maintains its artistic and cultural identity. Keywords: modern Balinese literature, Balinese language, haiku, cross-cultural identity, Japan

Abstract

Natsuo Kirino’s Out and Grotesque raises the topic of social reality in Japan. The issues raised in the novel are not far from the discussion of gender and the narrative of sexuality, which is presented through the issue of enjokousai (prostitution). This research attempts to uncover the forms of gender ideology deconstruction carried out by the author in the novel. This research is a qualitative research with literature study method. Data is collected from both novels and then analyzed using deconstruction theory and feminism theory. The results of the study show that the author deconstructed the discourse of gender inequality and sexuality in Japan and then poured it into the form of literary texts. The form of gender ideology deconstruction is gender ideology that follows the passage of time. Each character depicted is no longer influenced by the conventional order of Japanese society regarding how men and women should be. Instead, they choose to go by their own rules of life. Keywords: deconstruction, ideology, gender, Natsuo Kirino

Abstract

Kata kunci: puisi, ruang tubuh, konstruksi, profan sakral Abstract Exploitation of body image appeared repeatedly as theme in Indonesian poem in six decades, 1970—2016. In this research body image on Indonesian poems were analized focused on two points, the discourse of body authority, both sacred and profane as representation of human space image; the concept of space and body construction in the battle of life in poems in Bali. Method of this research is literary study by noting and reading technique. Data analysis method of this research is descriptive analytics by hermeneutic techniques and interpretative. This research used postcolonial of Sara Upstone theory by practicing the physical space and construction of body space and the existence of human itself. The results and discussion of this research prove that the authority of the body has irony with the events experienced by humans, namely the body as body, the body as religious simbol, and the body as a force of women in the face of the battle of life. The construction that takes place in the body eventually becomes a self dismantled by the poet who is ontologically skinned on his own. The body is destroyed in culture, inhumanity, while the soul as God is idealized in wholeness. Thus, the construction and the space between the profane and the sacred is the paradoxical space between the physical and the spiritual that the poet deconstructs to be a mere irony. Keywords: poem, body space, construction, sacred profane

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of identity ambivalence experienced by the Dayak Tomun community in Central Kalimantan as a result of interactions between customary tradition, Protestant Christianity, and state cultural policy. The research aims to explain how indigenous identity is shaped, contested, and negotiated within these intersecting power frameworks. Using a qualitative approach and cultural studies perspective, the analysis integrates Michel Foucault’s concept of disciplinary power, Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus and symbolic capital, and Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory. The findings show that Hidup Baadat and Mati Bapati (Living by Custom and Dying by Custom) are not merely ancestral customs, but disciplinary cultural practices that shape subjectivity and social conduct. The spread of Christianity introduced new moral and ritual regimes, generating tensions in the continuity of customary authority. Meanwhile, state intervention through Law No. 5/2017 on the Advancement of Culture redefined customary practices as cultural resources for development and tourism. This process results in identity ambivalence: traditional rituals continue to be performed, yet are simultaneously reframed as cultural commodities. The study offers a multi-theoretical interpretation of indigenous identity formation by demonstrating how disciplinary power, habitus, and structuration operate together in shaping the contemporary dynamics of Tomun cultural life.

Abstract

Previous studies on tri hita karana in modern Balinese literature have largely emphasized normative and descriptive perspectives, while analyses that approach literary texts as spaces for the production and negotiation of religiosity remain limited. This study aims to examine the representation of parahyangan religiosity in the short stories Pintu and Pekak Gede by IBW Widiasa Keniten. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this research conducts close textual analysis of narrative passages, dialogues, symbols, characters, and settings that articulate the relationship between humans and God. Data were collected through intensive reading, then selected and thematically classified before being interpreted in relation to cultural meaning-making processes. The findings indicate that parahyangan religiosity in both short stories is represented a reflective cultural practice that is continuously reconfigured rather than a static normative doctrine. Religious symbols function as media for the production of meaning that articulate and legitimize the characters’ spiritual experiences. The characters are constructed as religious subjects who continuously negotiate tradition, personal experience, and social change, thereby revealing the shifting transformative of religious subjectivity in contemporary Balinese society. Furthermore, the settings operate as discursive spaces that integrate sacred and social dimensions, showing how religiosity is embedded in ordinary social practices. This study demonstrates that modern Balinese short stories do not merely symbolically represent religious values but also produce new meanings of parahyangan within the context of contemporary Balinese culture. These findings confirm that literature serves as a reflective and critical space for reinterpreting local religiosity amid ongoing social and cultural change.

Abstract

Over the last ten years (2009-2018), the average number of modern Balinese literary books published reached 10.9 titles per year. This data is derived from the number of books nominated for the annual Rancage Literary Award over the last ten years. This research identifies and discusses opportunities and challenges in the development of the publication of modern Balinese literary books nowadays. The research focuses on identifying the supporting factors and challenges of the publication of modern Balinese literary books. Research methods applied in this study were library studies and limited ethnographic research through interviews, especially with stakeholders of modern Balinese literature including writers, readers and book agencies. Data were analyzed by Escarpit’s theory of sociology of literature that proposes the study of literature in the entire environment of literary creation, distribution and consumption. This study concludes that the provincial government of Bali, publishers, literary communities and authors all play an important role in overcoming challenges and taking advantage of opportunities for increasing the publication of modern Balinese literature.
