Abstract

This study critically examines the intertextual transformation from the Balinese Kidung Jerum Kundangdia to Oka Rusmini's Novel Jerum (2019), focusing on how this dialogue articulates women's emotional resistance against patriarchal constraints. It addresses a gap in understanding how traditional Nusantara narratives can be dynamically reinterpreted to foreground female subjectivity and agency. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in Riffaterre's semiotics, the research identifies the kidung as the generative hypogram. It traces how Rusmini's novel utilizes the shared matrix of satya (loyalty) while foregrounding semara (passionate love) as a model for emotional expression and resistance. Data, derived from close textual analysis and archival documentation of both primary sources, were analyzed through thematic content analysis and feminist discourse analysis. The findings demonstrate that Jerum critically reorients reader empathy towards the protagonist Ni Jerum's suppressed inner life, repositioning her as an active agent challenging societal norms. Simultaneously, the novel revitalizes core motifs from the kidung tradition for contemporary gender discourse. This research significantly contributes to Nusantara literary and gender studies by illustrating the dynamic reciprocity between source text and adaptation. It affirms the power of intertextual strategies within local traditions to advocate for women's emotional legitimacy and resistance, enriching the treasury of text-based gender analysis in the region.

Abstract

This study explores the evolving perception of the kembar buncing custom among the Bali Aga community, where the birth of unlike sex twins was traditionally considered a taboo, believed to bring misfortune and resulting in social stigma, exile, and financial burdens for affected families. In recent years, however, the perception has shifted toward greater inclusivity, with such births increasingly viewed as symbolic representations of harmony between good and evil. The study aims to understand the dynamics of this cultural transformation and its broader implications for preserving Bali Aga identity amid the pressures of modernity. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, non-participatory interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions (FGDs). The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, involving data reduction, data display, and verification to ensure systematic interpretation. The theoretical framework is informed by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, which provides tools for analyzing how social dispositions evolve through interactions with structural forces and through the strategic use of various forms of capital: economic, social, cultural, and symbolic. The findings reveal that the transformation of the kembar buncing custom is driven by regulatory adaptation, cultural negotiation, hegemonic resistance, and symbolic reconstruction. Changes in community habitus, shaped by the strategic mobilization of capital by key social actors, have contributed to a shift in customary paradigms. This transformation suggests the need to recontextualize traditional customs within contemporary frameworks, not only to ensure cultural sustainability but also to advance human rights and social inclusion within the Bali Aga society.

Abstract

This article examines the elements of maritime literature in the locality of North Bali, based on the source Babad Buleleng. Babad Buleleng chronicles the early dynasty of kings who ruled the Buleleng region. Buleleng is a strategic area in North Bali and has often been involved in economic, political, and multicultural interactions. This paper uses a textual study approach with an interpretive method. Based on the study conducted, it was found that maritime values are deeply embedded in Babad Buleleng. The identified aspects include navigation, trade, cultural contacts and maritime safety. These aspects have influenced the socio-cultural life of the community until today. Through these maritime aspects, it can be stated that Buleleng has been a strong maritime locus in Bali in the past. This value can be optimized to build maritime awareness and identity of Bali's maritime people, especially in North Bali, to reposition the sea as an important axis in the economic and socio-cultural life of the community, based on the wisdom of classical literary works inherited to this day.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the discourse on Balinese women's resistance against patriarchal culture as reflected in short stories by three Balinese women writers. Short stories by Oka Rusmini, Kadek Sonia Piscayanti, and Devy Gita were analyzed using Sara Mills' theory of feminist critical discourse analysis and Hélène Cixous' feminine writing. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques in the form of literature study. The female characters in these short stories are both positioned as objects and subjects who fight against sexual harassment, domestic burdens, and pseudo identity. However, the writer's position expresses women's rebellion who cut off her legs, decided to become a prostitute, and planned her death. The reader's position then has implications for women's independence as outlined in the short story as women who are independent in the domestic, economic and traditional fields; support the family; and take care of herself and her children after divorce. The objective of this research is to provide inspiring ideas to voice and fight for injustice due to patriarchal culture experienced by Balinese women in particular and Indonesia in general. In addition, this research is also hoped to be a comparison in depicting the insights of women writers' struggles in various different cultural narratives, especially from the perspective of the global south.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between the perception of e-visa services and service quality towards the satisfaction of e-visa services with the intention of foreign tourists to revisit Batam. This research method employs a quantitative approach, targeting foreign tourists with a B211A visa index, with a sample size of 100 respondents. The sampling technique used in this research is Accidental Sampling. Data collection involved distributing questionnaires, conducting interviews with several respondents, and a literature review to complement supporting theories. The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS Student Version software. The results of this study indicate that (1) perception has a significant direct influence on tourist satisfaction, does not significantly impact the intention to revisit, and is partially mediated by the intention to return to Batam; (2) the quality of e-visa services has a significant direct influence on tourist satisfaction and the intention to revisit, yet is fully mediated by the intention to return to Batam; and (3) tourist satisfaction does not significantly influence the intention to return to Batam. This research contributes academically by providing an understanding of the effectiveness of implementing e-visa services in increasing visits by foreign tourists to Batam in the new normal era. It reinforces theories related to tourist satisfaction and intentions to revisit while enriching the body of knowledge in the field of tourism and immigration studies. Additionally, this study offers practical contributions by providing scientific research data to stakeholders and policymakers in the tourism sector.
