Abstract

One of the main challenges in developing traditional game-based physics learning is that it is not yet known how students perceive the approach. Students' perceptions, interests, and readiness are crucial aspects that need to be mapped before developing a targeted learning strategy. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze how students respond to traditional game-based physics learning through science literacy, the level of interest generated, and their readiness to be actively involved in the learning process with this approach. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, the study was conducted in one of the high schools in Sidoarjo City, with 100 students in grade XI purposively selected to represent a diversity of academic and social characteristics. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Most students indicated that they still have difficulties in understanding and linking physics concepts with daily life and technology. The majority of students are interested and motivated to learn physics when learning is packaged in an engaging, creative, and fun way. However, they also expressed higher interest when learning is done through experiments and games, although most students had never experienced physics learning using traditional games, they showed an open and positive attitude towards the approach. The conclusion is idea of physics learning based on traditional games received a positive response from students. This approach can increase interest and motivation to learn and also opens up great opportunities to improve science literacy and active participation of students in a meaningful and contextualized learning process. Although there are some challenges in linking concepts with local cultural contexts, these obstacles can be overcome by designing appropriate learning oriented to students' experiences.

Abstract

Physics education is often perceived as abstract and lacking context, leading to low interest and engagement among students. The integration of local wisdom and immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR), is seen as a promising approach to bridging this gap. This study aims to explore the needs of students in the development of VR-edutainment media based on ethnophysics as an alternative to traditional physics learning, which is more contextual, interactive, and meaningful. The study employs a quantitative descriptive approach using simple random sampling techniques with 30 high school students, comprising grades X and XI. The instrument was an online questionnaire comprising 20 statements grouped into four main aspects: interest in learning physics, integration of local wisdom, science literacy, and technology utilization. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify trends in student responses, supplemented by qualitative interpretations to enhance the understanding of the findings. The results showed that the majority of students responded positively to physics learning linked to local wisdom, while also showing high enthusiasm for the use of interactive technology. More than 80% of respondents stated that digital simulations helped them understand concepts and made learning more enjoyable; however, a small number of students still struggled to explain natural phenomena scientifically. These findings underscore the importance of learning media that integrates local culture with immersive technology, thereby enhancing the learning experience to be more contextual, meaningful, and aligned with the needs of the digital generation. In conclusion, this study successfully mapped the initial needs of students for the development of ethnophysics-based VR edutainment media. The development of ethnophysics-based VR-edutainment media holds significant potential to enhance science literacy while strengthening students’ connection to their cultural heritage, thereby fostering more meaningful and transformative learning experiences.

Abstract

Traditional games are part of local wisdom that preserves cultural values and educational potential. One such game is the slingshot, which is not only known as a hunting tool but also incorporates many concepts of physics such as elasticity, potential energy, kinetic energy, and parabolic motion. This study aims to review the literature on slingshots and their relevance in physics education. Data were collected from Scopus-indexed international publications using the keywords “slingshot OR catapult,” yielding 3,013 articles. After applying inclusion criteria and screening based on title, abstract, and keywords, 1,000 articles were selected for analysis using VOSviewer. The results of the study show five main clusters, namely the use of slingshots in aircraft launch, biomechanics, principles in animals, animal experiments, and fundamental aspects of physics. These findings confirm that catapults can be used as a contextual medium in learning to improve understanding of physics concepts and at the same time preserve local culture. By linking indigenous knowledge with scientific principles, this study contributes to enriching physics learning while encouraging the preservation of cultural heritage within modern education.

Abstract

Traditional dance is a form of local wisdom that has great potential to be utilized in the development of contextual physics learning. Silir-Silir dance is a dance typical of Lamongan, East Java, inspired by the wind, the rhythm of nature, and the dynamics of body movement, presenting movement patterns that can be analyzed using the principles of physics. This study aims to identify the physics concepts contained in the Silir-Silir dance, explore how the dance can be used as a learning resource that connects scientific theory with cultural phenomena, and assess its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in quality and inclusive education. The research uses a descriptive approach, with data obtained through literature studies, observation of performances and rehearsals, and in-depth interviews with trainers and dancers. The results of the analysis show that the variations in hand movements, changes in tempo, body position shifts, and balance patterns in the dance can be related to the concepts of force, momentum, acceleration, and center of mass. The physical interpretation of these movements shows that Silir-Silir Dance is not only aesthetically valuable but also contains movement structures that can be used as a medium to explain scientific phenomena while reflecting local wisdom, such as harmony with nature, simplicity of life, and the daily traditions of the Lamongan community. Thus, this study shows that the integration of Silir-Silir Dance in culture-based physics learning can strengthen ethnoscience learning, facilitate the understanding of scientific concepts, and foster students' appreciation of local cultural heritage in a contextual and meaningful way.
