Abstract

Guillain-Barré Syndrome or GBS is one of the emergency conditions of neurology. Currently, its incidence is relatively low and rare, with a rate of 0.81 to 1.89 of 100,000 people in a year. Guillain-Barré Syndrome or GBS, also known as acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, is a collection of clinical symptoms caused by an acute inflammatory process that attacks the nervous system. The dominant pathogen that causes Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni). Infection with the pathogen Campylobacter jejuni can trigger an immune and humoral autoimmune response that results in nerve dysfunction and the emergence of GBS symptoms. The clinical course of GBS can be divided into several phases, including the progressive phase, plateau phase, and recovery phase. In cases of GBS, it is possible that these factors are involved in the onset of the disease. Some risk factors associated with GBS include viral infections such as Zika virus, influenza virus, and measles-rubella virus. The diagnosis of GBS includes the main symptoms, additional symptoms, cerebrospinal fluid examination, electrophysiological tests, and the exclusion of other diagnoses. The main symptoms include progressive weakness in the extremities accompanied by or without ataxia and areflexia or hyporeflexia in the tendons. The management that can be done includes supportive therapy through the respiratory system. Another treatment option is immunotherapy, with the goal of accelerating disease recovery and reducing the severity of GBS through the immune system.

Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that can be a major source of disability throughout the world. Changes in conditions in the body, such as α-Syn mutations can increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease. α-Syn mutations will cause the loss of large and selective dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) thereby triggering the early symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The high risk of side effects in the use of modern pharmacological therapy, indicates that a new breakthrough in the form of herbal-based ethnomedicine therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease is urgently needed. Ginkgo leaf, from the Ginkgo biloba plant, has long been known as a popular herbal supplement in Europe, Asia and America. The content of active compounds in ginkgo leaves was found to have the potential to provide therapeutic effects in patients with Parkinson's disease. This article will discuss the potency, mechanism of action, extraction process, and comparison of the potency of the two compounds with previous therapies. The development of the potential of ginkgo leaves is expected to reduce the increasing number of cases and provide a better quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract

Spatial intelligence, especially in a visual context, is the ability to construct, design, or arrange the structure of an object in space that includes various directions and positions. Spatial intelligence, especially spatial memory, develops throughout childhood along with the functional maturation of specific areas in the cerebral white matter tracts. Based on this, efforts to improve spatial intelligence are important to do in childhood, one of which is through the traditional game engklek. Children's spatial memory intelligence increases through the process of playing engklek. The engklek game can train the use of spatial memory through movement within spatial boundaries and cognitive mapping of the brain which represents images of the environment and objects in space. The method used in this literature review is by searching and reviewing various literature sourced from online databases such as PubMed as well, Google Scholar, and textbook.

Abstract

Abstract

Adulthood is divided into three stages: young adulthood, middle adulthood, and older adulthood. Middle adulthood (40-65 years) is the phase where the balance between growth and neurocognitive development begins. In this phase, prevention of cognitive decline is necessary by strengthening cognitive reserves through brain stimulation through musical activities. This study used a literature review method. In this article, we conducted a search using electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, and the National Institute of Health (NIH). The review found that playing music can increase dopamine in the reward system and inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which can improve motivation, attention, memory, and learning processes, thus strengthening cognitive function. Findings from Balinese gamelan and flute players indicate increased alpha and beta brainwave activity, which stimulate executive function, memory, and motivation. Therefore, playing traditional Indonesian music has the potential to improve cognitive abilities as a form of prevention of neurodegenerative disorders in adulthood. It was recommended that playing music in middle adulthood will improve cognitive function by playing traditional music.

Abstract

Abstract

Highlight: Coastal communities show high prevalence of cognitive decline. There is no correlation between NRF2 levels and executive function. Gender and education level were significantly associated with executive dysfunction.   ABSTRACT Introduction: Elderly people frequently suffer from neurodegenerative conditions that affect cognitive function. Redox homeostasis dysregulation plays a significant role in neurodegenerative diseases. Oxidative stress activates the transcription factor called nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), which is essential for regulating the expression of genes involved in cellular defense mechanisms. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum NRF2 levels and executive function, as well as to identify other variables that may influence executive function among residents of coastal villages on Lombok Island. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design with consecutive sampling. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking status, and physical activity were collected. Statistical analyses employed Spearman's rank correlation test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression test. Results: A total of 39 participants were included, with an average age of 53.38 years. Most participants were female, had a low educational level, did not have hypertension or diabetes mellitus, had high physical activity levels, and were non-smokers. The average NRF2 level was 0.54 ng/mL. The correlation test showed no significant relationship between serum NRF2 levels and executive function. Fisher's exact test showed a significant relationship between gender and education with executive function. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis identified education level as a predictor of executive dysfunction. Conclusion: Serum NRF2 levels were not correlated with executive dysfunction. Educational level was identified as a predictive factor for executive dysfunction.

Abstract

The occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus keeps rising worldwide each year, and this includes Indonesia. Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus frequently encounter Drug-Related Problems (DRPs) due to multiple medications resulting from related health issues. Thus, recognizing DRPs is essential to enhance treatment success. The Mataram City Regional General Hospital stands out as one of the hospitals with the most significant number of type 2 diabetes mellitus cases each year from 2021 to 2023, showing an increase of 18.81%. The objective of this study was to analyze the profile of DRPs (Drug-Related Problems) in antidiabetic therapy among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in the inpatient ward of Mataram City General Hospital during the period of April 2025. Data gathering was performed retrospectively by reviewing medical documents and conducting patient interviews. The medical documents were examined using the Cipolle classification, and the findings were illustrated in a diagram format with Microsoft Excel. The findings indicated that drug-related issues (DRPs) were present in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Mataram City Regional General Hospital in April 2025. Among the 55 diabetes patients, 7 were found to have DRPs (12.72%), with DRPs manifesting as indications lacking medication (9.09%) and medications prescribed without indications (3.64%).
