Abstract

Teachers who engage in information, media, and technology must be critical thinkers with a broad perspective in order to prepare their students for the literacy demands of the twenty-first century. Language teachers' roles are crucial in developing students' literacies so that they can adapt to digital technologies in education. We've been teaching pre-service teachers about media literacy and educational technology in a variety of subject areas, as well as assisting them in incorporating new media and technologies into their curriculum design. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of digital literacy of pre-service teachers at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal and to investigate their perceptions of technology in language teaching. This study used a mixed method research design to investigate how pre-service teachers use digital technologies in the teaching and learning process during the practice of teaching in the Micro Teaching class. Furthermore, by investigating digital technologies in language teaching, pre-service teachers' perceptions are revealed. The research involved 40 pre-service teachers who are tested using Ferrari's model of digital competence areas such as information, communication, content creation, safety, and problem solving. The findings for qualitative data collection were based on classroom observation, interviews, and surveys. The findings reveal that higher levels of digital literacy in pre-service teachers influence their performance in integrating technology into their teaching process, and they are assured in motivting students to increase digital literacy skills. Their positive attitudes toward using technology in language teaching raise awareness of the importance of digital literacies and digitally literate people in developing digital literacy skills for survival in the digital age.

The massive spread of the Covid-19 pandemic that results in the school closure demands the movement of learning mode from direct interaction to online learning. To satisfy current demand, the learning design needs to be revised, even renew. As technology massively integrated in EFL classroom, the TPACK framework is viewed to be important to maintain the effective technology-rich classroom which also focusing on the content material and pedagogical aspects. This article presents the STLDM (Scaffolded Teachers’ TPACK Lesson Design Model) in ELT as guideline in developing TPACK-based lesson design. Digital wisdom is accommodated in the design since the integration of technology is concerned. This model includes a two-stage development process in which the first step works on constructing the instructional objective, the second stage works and similar to specifying the design goals in determining the decision for achieving the objectives. It is assumed that the model brings betterment in the TPACK of teachers massively and shifts in the lesson design.

Abstract

This article aims at sharing to the readers on how SPADA UNTIRTA utilized in Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University may enhance students' capacity for independent learning. Technology has advanced in recent years with its extensive usage in the global economy, tourism, and even education. To keep up with the increasingly technologically advanced age of globalization, technology-based media must be present in teaching-learning activities. E-learning media is one of the technology-based educational tools. Using internet or other computer network medium, e-learning enables the transmission of educational resources to students (Hartley, 2001). Teaching-learning activities previously restricted to campuses or schools are now possible anytime, anywhere with the aid of these technology-based media. One of the campus's electronic educational resources is SPADA. The goal of this strategy was to address some problems with higher education while allowing for seamless learning. The methods in which SPADA UNTIRTA can assist students in improving their ability to manage their own learning are referred to as ways in which SPADA UNTIRTA can be used as a tool for student self-integration. This implies that with SPADA UNTIRTA, students should be able to increase their level of independence in their learning activities. As a result, lecturers will only need to teach the material; additional learning tasks may be fully up to the students, providing them the opportunity to learn at their own speed. In this instance, SPADA UNTIRTA, a technology-based learning tool, is successful in promoting the students' independent study, especially in teaching and learning English for Specific Purposes.

Abstract

The change from printed to electronic content has an impact on students’ reading comprehension and reading style. This article presents experiments designed to assess the influence of electronic text on the reading comprehension of the second semester students of English Language Education Study Program. This study aims to ascertain whether there is a substantial difference in basic reading comprehension achievement between students with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. In this article presents two experiments designed to assess the effect of electronic text on the basic reading comprehension of second-semester students. In the first trial, 72 students read either electronic or printed storybooks in learning basic reading comprehension course. This study found no statistically significant difference between open-ended questions and a test for measuring basic reading comprehension. There was, however, substantial statistical difference in reading comprehension between students with different learning styles, for the group who read the electronic versions of the stories, as determined by e-storybook. As measured by test of basic reading comprehension, their comprehension of the e-book stories was significantly greater. Thus the result of this research shows there are no there are no notable distinctions between the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic styles of learning derived from the basic reading comprehension learning outcomes of students who were taught using an electronic storybook or a print storybook.

Abstract

The basic aim of academic presentations is generally for turning the written ideas into the spoken ones. Most of the ideas presented are in academic or scientific matters. In the university level, the activities of prsentations become ordinary ways to share ideas and discussions, mostly done as the output of course assignments. This is why the skill of presentation is important for students, especially in English. Academic presentation for non-native English speakers will be a little bit hard to do, for some students in English Department as well. They will easily share ideas in Bahasa Indonesia or if it is in English, it is easier to have casual conversation rather than having a presentation in English. Students need this kind of experience. The experience that brings them to engage with audience when they do an academic presentation, even it is inside or outside the classroom, for example an international forum or conference. Choosing the mode that they choose for the presentation is also important to build the audience engagement. It becomes harder when they consider that speaking English during the presentation makes them facing more complicated problems dealing with how to communicate with the audience, both in presentation and question and answer sessions. Forey and Feng (2016) state that engagement is analyzed through four features of engagement in academic presentations: 1) speech signs; 2) involvement; 3) social distance; 4) affect. The features support relevant analysis of engagement visually on the verbal and nonverbal act during the students’ presentation. It practically opens the students’ mind and knowledge about how to achieve the audince’s engagement within their session.

Abstract

Abstract. At higher educational levels, students/ learners experienced some difficulties in developing good writing. In expanding English writing academically, it is essential to analyze students’ writing development in several matters. This study aimed to ascertain difficulties in writing an essay on the students'/learners’ perspectives, particularly on ideational problems, and their expressions on that issue. By conducting a quantitative case study research design, this study engaged 37 third-year students at a private university in Jakarta who joined an academic writing course. In collecting the data, this study assigned a set of questionnaires and a Cause-and-Effect essay writing as the instruments. Based on the collated data and analysis, this study revealed six issues on ideational matters encountered by the students/learners in common, and each had different expressions of difficulties. Among the 37 writings, this study deeply narrated two remarkable essays with their statements. Hence, further research is needed to achieve an in-depth and comprehensive result.

Abstract

Abstract. Many studies have discussed effective instructions for teaching speaking skills, but very few studies that explored students' preferences regarding the appropriate instruction for improving their speaking skills. This paper tries to fill the research gap by finding out the student's opinions on the use of digital storytelling for their speaking skills instruction. This study recruited 28 pre-service teachers to be participants. A qualitative approach was employed to answer the problems in this study. The findings were derived from analyzing the pre-service teacher’s opinions through observations and interviews. The findings revealed that most pre-service teachers feel satisfied with using digital storytelling to learn speaking skills. Moreover, those pre-service teachers presume that speaking was no longer boring activity, it became both fun and challenging and develop their digital literacy. The study suggests that the activities during creating a digital storytelling project should be well prepared.

Abstract

Abstract. This article analyzes environmental discourses in English as Foreign Language textbooks used nationwide in senior secondary school education in Indonesia. Published by a recommended private publisher, the textbook serves as the supporting teaching material for a compulsory English subject for senior high school students. We focused our multimodal critical discourse analysis on themes and discursive affordance of the texts and images depicted in the textbooks. Anchoring in the type of environmental discourses proposed by Curdt-Christiansen (2021), this study scrutinized to what extent environment-related texts promote profound environmentalism. The study's conclusion is that the textbook authors consider environmental literacy though still in ‘shallow’ form, and limitedly provide an educational experience that would possibly enhance students’ environmental awareness and, by that means, prepare them to act by sustainability development.

Abstract

Literary texts in learning English have been used worldwide in teaching English in various contexts, i.e., first, second, and foreign languages. However, debates among educators about its effectiveness continuously occur. In this research, we tried to examine the students' attitudes toward using literary works for teaching English. Apart from studies about using literary texts in English teaching, this research was done with a combination of imaginative recreation. The research subjects were the 3rd-semester students taking the "Literary Appreciation" English Department at a private university in Semarang in 2020. A hundred and twenty students were involved in this research. Only forty-five students responded to the questionnaires spread to one hundred and twenty. The questionnaires consisted of ten questions concerning the attitude toward using literary texts. The results showed that the overall index of students' attitudes was 3.7, which was classified as a strong attitude toward using literary texts. From the findings, it can be concluded that most students had strong attitudes toward using literary text in English teaching. However, teachers must be attentive to problems that might arise during its implementation.
