Abstract

Writing is the most difficult productive skill to master when studying English. To assist students in improving their writing, teachers should be aware of their students' issues. The goal of the study was to highlight the issues that students at vocational schools have when producing analytical exposition texts. A case study with a qualitative design was used in this investigation. To take part in the study, a total of 25 eleventh graders from a vocational school in South Sumatra, Indonesia, were hand-selected. Data for this study were gathered using a closed-opened questionnaire and a writing exam. To assess the data from the writing exam and closed-ended questionnaire, this study used coding, category development, category description, and data interpretation based on Merriam's (2009) theories. They follow the same procedures as the thematic analysis. The findings revealed that, on average, 33.7% of students at vocational institutions found it challenging to create analytical exposition writings. The vocational school's students struggled with vocabulary, organization, mechanics, language use, and content. Their reading habits, low motivation, and low self-esteem regarding their writing abilities were other contributing factors to their writing problems. This discovery should contribute to addressing such issues by providing an efficient method that aids students in producing their analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

Based on the evaluation of the implementation of English Medium Instruction (EMI) Class since 2021-2022 at several departments of a private university in East Java, it can be found that content lecturers’ challenge is how to engage students and facilitate students in understanding the material. Therefore, English specialists or lecturers held EMI lecturer training purposed to content subjects who teach in EMI classes. This study offers an overview of how a private university's EMI training program was designed. Some of the steps taken in this process are as follows: introducing EMI implementation (teaching methodology, the use of multimodal and interactive teaching), training, and content subject practicing or teaching demonstration. This study was done by analyzing EMI lecturers’ attitude toward EMI and their perceptions after they participated in joining the training. The findings showed that EMI training is very beneficial for content subjects to boost and improve their quality in the teaching process.

Abstract

Students' writing quality in academic writing must still be investigated. Especially in terms of coherence and arrangement between sentences, sometimes inaccuracies cause sentences written to be less meaningful. This study aims to: 1) describe the use of discourse markers in the final undergraduate student article projects, especially in the discussion section, and 2) explain how far the quality of undergraduate students' writing is in applying discourse markers. Discourse Markers are conjunctions used as hooks between sentences so that the linkages between sentences are maintained, and the meaning of the sentences can be easily understood. This study applies the theory of Discourse Markers by Fraser (2009), which is complemented by an explanation of material on Academic Writing based on the book Writing Academic English by Oshima and Hogue (2006). The instrument is in the form of documentation. This study's qualitative data for analysis came from 11 undergraduate students' final project articles focused on the discussion part only. Furthermore, the data is categorized into three types of Discourse Markers: contrastive, elaborative, and inferential. After that, the analysis results are also provided in the form of the quality of student writing which has been categorized as appropriate and less appropriate.

Abstract

This research began in the challenging of writing Hortatory Exposition Text, faced by students, especially second language learners in academic settings. Despite writing's crucial role in analysis and communication, limited structured practice leads to incoherent expression. Qualitative descriptive was applied to analyze the use of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory. The object of this research were fifteen students of SMA Kesatrian 2 Semarang. The students’ texts were analyzed by using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory. The findings show 336 grammatical and 138 lexical cohesions in the reading passages. The grammatical consisted of 170 (35.9%) references, 3 (0.6%) substitutions, 28 (5.9%) ellipses, and 135 (28.5%) conjunctions and the lexical cohesion consisted of 82 reiterations (17.3%) and 56 (11.8%) collocations. Abstract

This study discussed the effect of implementing the Emancipated curriculum on student learning outcomes in spoken interaction material at SMK Negeri 2 Slawi. Quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group. The research participants were selected using purposive sampling, and the pre-test and post-test results were statistically analyzed. To obtain quantitative data, the researcher conducted a written test to check students' understanding of oral interaction texts. The pre-test and post-test learning outcomes were analyzed using paired t-test and N-Gain Score test statistical calculations. The results of the hypothesis test on interpersonal conversation text showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, with a significance value of 0.000, while the control group had a value of 0.001. The N-Gain Score for the experimental group was 0.6447, and for the control group was -0.4452. These results illustrate that the intervention provided to the experimental group positively and significantly affected the measured outcomes. In contrast, the control group experienced a decrease in the results after the intervention. For transactional conversation text, the experimental group had a significance value of 0.000, while the control group had a value of 0.146. The N-Gain Score for the experimental group was 0.6808, and for the control group was 0.0640. In this study, implementing the Emancipated curriculum was quite effective for learning outcomes of oral interaction texts. In addition, the researcher suggests that English teachers apply the teaching steps according to the independent curriculum to teach other types of texts.
