Abstract

Water filters are one of the efforts that can be made to reduce the content of contaminants and bacteria in water that do not meet the requirements. Sand and gravel are media that are widely used in filters, which can reduce coliform content levels. This research aims to see the effectiveness of sand filters with variations in the thickness and diameter of sand in reducing the coliform content of dug well water. This type of research is experimental, using pre-test and post-test methods. The population is a sample of dug well water containing Coliform bacteria in Wenang District, Telling Bawah Village. The sample is water that has passed the filtering process 12 times. The instruments in this research were sand filters with variations in diameter and thickness and biological examination of water samples. The research data was then tested using the t-test. The research showed that sand filters with a thickness of 70 cm and a diameter of 0.45 mm were ineffective in reducing coliform content. In comparison, sand filters with a thickness of 70 cm with a diameter of 0.3 mm and sand filters with a thickness of 90 cm with a diameter of 0.45 mm and a diameter of 0.3 mm effectively reduce the Coliform content in dug well water. The results of statistical tests using the t-test on a 70 cm thick sand filter with a diameter of 0.45 mm showed a value of 0.219 (p > 0.05). A sand filter with a thickness of 70 cm with a diameter of 0.3 mm shows an ap value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). A 90 cm thick sand filter with a diameter of 0.45 mm showed a value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). A 90 cm thick sand filter with a diameter of 0.3 mm shows an AP value of 0.000 (p < 0.05).

Abstract

The engaging and personalized nature from short video makes it quickly popular, yet concerns persist about their potential to diminish critical thinking skills. This study investigates whether short videos with educational content can improve students' critical thinking skills. Using a quasi-experiment method, Thirty-three participants were divided into control and experimental groups, with critical thinking measured using the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HCTSR) based on essay analysis in pretest and posttest. After administering educational short videos to the experimental group, the results showed that there was an increase in students' critical thinking skills, shown by the result of controlling the pretest variable through the ANCOVA test with a p-value of <0.001. The result highlights the potential of educational short videos as tools for fostering critical thinking by providing interventions which prioritize treatment fidelity through standardized protocols (SOPs) for content delivery, validating assessment tools, and structuring content design. Recommendations for future research include larger sample sizes, repeated data collection at strategic intervals, and rigorous validation of question complexity.

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing use of infrastructure in Indonesia every year requires a large cement supply. Cement is a very crucial material for development, and its demand in increasing line with the development of human facilities and infrastructure. However, the cement manufacturing process can cause air pollution, CO₂ gas emissions, and produce B3 waste that can damage the environment. One way to reduce this environmental impact is to utilize industrial waste, such as fly ash and lime, as an alternative to cement using geopolymer technology. This study aimed to measure the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar made from fly ash and lime, and to understand how variations in the mixture affect the achievement of maximum mortar strength. The approach applied in this study is an experimental method carried out in the laboratory of the Muhammadiyah University of Parepare. The test specimens used were in the form of cubes measuring 5x5x5 cm with a ratio of fly ash and lime of 70:30, 75:25, and 80:20, so that a total of 36 test specimens were made. The experiment results showed that the mixture with a higher proportion of ash consistently produced greater compressive strength. The mixture with 75% fly ash and 25% lime increased in compressive strength from 6.667 MPa after 7 days to 10.667 MPa after 28 days. This proves that the addition of fly ash in greater amounts can increase the compressive strength of the mortar, especially because fly ash functions as a pozzolanic material that reacts with free lime, forming calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) compounds that function as the main binder and thus strengthen the mortar structure. Therefore, the combination of fly ash and lime at 80%:20% is the most efficient and superior mixture in producing high-strength mortar.

Abstract

The Peunayong area holds significant historical value in the development of Banda Aceh. Initially, this area functioned as a trade center before transforming into a Chinatown during the Dutch colonial era, reflecting its cultural diversity. After the 2004 tsunami, Peunayong was designated as a historic district due to the numerous late 19th to 20th-century buildings featuring a blend of Chinese, European, and local architectural styles. However, this cultural heritage is threatened by rapid urban development, necessitating a long-term management policy. This study aims to identify the development of Peunayong across the sultanate, colonial, and independence periods using a qualitative descriptive method. The research utilizes six area maps from 1646 to 2023, representing the evolution of each period. The analysis focuses on land use, circulation systems, as well as building mass and form. The findings reveal both changes and enduring aspects, along with their dynamics, which can serve as a foundation for conservation planning. The maps indicate that Peunayong has maintained clear physical boundaries since early on. The persistent land-use aspects include ports, military functions, commercial areas, and residential zones. The circulation system has undergone significant changes, transitioning from a water-based to a land-based system, while building mass and form have gradually densified, shaping Peunayong's present-day character. Certain elements identified in the old maps can be strategically reinforced or reintroduced for historical education and to strengthen the area's identity, such as revitalizing residential and water transportation functions and interpreting the narratives of the railway line and Gadjah Island as inspirations for planning Peunayong’s historic district.
