Abstract

Usually, multiplication is introduced to students to represent quantities that come in group. However there is also rectangular array model which is also related to multiplication. Barmby et al (2009) has shown that the rectangular model such as array representations encourage students to develop their thinking about multiplication as a binary operation with row and column representing two inputs. Considering that finding, this study focusses on a design research that was conducted in Indonesia in which I investigate second grade students’ (between 7 and 8 years old) in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 2 Palembang, Indonesia, ability to structuring the situation and their ability to represent rectangular model into multiplication sentence. The results shows us that students activity to structuring the situation, looking the number of objects in row or in column, lead them to repeated addition and transform it into multiplication sentence. Keywords: Rectangular pattern, Multiplication DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.2.2.747.185-198

Abstract

The aim of this research is produce a set of PISA-like mathematics task with Indonesia natural and cultural heritage as context which are valid, practical, to assess students’ mathematics literacy. This is design research using type of development research with formative evaluation. A total of 20 students of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. Beside, 10 experts were involved in this research to assess the feasibility of prototyping in terms of content, context and language. Walk through, documentation, questionnaire, test result, and interviews are way to collect the data. This research produced a PISA-like math task is as many 12 category of content, context, and process valid, practical and has potential effect. The validity came empirical evaluation of validation and reliability testing during small group. From the field test, we conclude that the tasks also potentially effect to the students’ mathematical literacy in activating the indicators of each Fundamental Mathematical Capabilities. Keywords: development research, PISA task, mathematics literacy, fundamental mathematical capabilities DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.1.2812.1-8

Abstract

Problem solving plays an important role in mathematics and should have a prominent role in the mathematics education. The term problem solving refers to mathematics tasks that have the potential to provide intellectual challenges for enhancing students' mathematical understanding and development. In addition, the contextual problem that requires students to connect their mathematical knowledge in solving mathematical situational problem is believed to be an impact on the development students' problem-solving ability. The tasks that have been developed by PISA meet both of these criteria. As stated by the NCTM, that problem-solving skill and ability should be developed to students when they were in primary school (K5-8), therefore, it is important to do an effort to guide students in developing problem-solving ability from primary school such as accustom students to do some mathematical solving-problem tasks. Thus, in this research we tried to investigate how to develop mathematical problem-solving tasks like PISA's question that have potential effect toward students' mathematical problem-solving abilities?. We used a formative evaluation type of development research as an mean to achieve this research goal. This type of research is conducted in two steps, namely preliminary stage and formative evaluation stage covering self evaluation, prototyping (expert reviews, one-to-one, and small group), and field test. This research involve four primary schools in Palembang, there are SD Muhammadiyah 6 Palembang, MIN 1 & MIN 2 Palembang, and SDN 179 Palembang. The result of this research showed that the mathematical problem-solving tasks that have been developed have potential effect in exploring mathematical problem-solving ability of the primary school students. It is shown from their work in solving problem where all of the indicators of problem solving competency have emerged quite well category. In addition, based on interview result from some students, known that they like to do such tasks because can improve their reasoning, creativity and thinking ability.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and compare the students’ fluency, flexibility, and originality in solving non-routine problems in the Palembang context. They were depicted from the student’s fluency, flexibility, and originality of solving the horizontal and vertical mathematization forms. This qualitative study employed. The subjects of this study were 30 students of grade nine of junior high schools in Palembang. The instruments used were tests and interviews. The tests were employed to investigate the written horizontal and vertical mathematizations forms. Meanwhile, the interviews were to explore the students’ ideas with inadequately detailed answers. Then, the test and interview data were reduced and grouped based on the indicators of creativity. The reduced data were presented in a descriptive form for conclusions. The results of the data analysis showed that the high-ability students were the most fluent and flexible in solving the problems. Still, the provided solutions were less original and tended to use formal mathematics in the forms of formulas, symbols, and operations. Meanwhile, the moderate-ability students tended to start to solve problems by simplifying them, then presenting them in visual images. The answer sheets of the moderate-ability students revealed their fluency in understanding the problems and solutions, flexibility, and originality of thinking. This study obtained different results from the low-ability students who tended to have difficulties understanding the problems and made many errors in solving them.  Such a condition showed their inability to write the known data and relate the data to other facts they had already learned. As a result, their answers did not represent fluency, flexibility, and originality.

Abstract

Solving mathematics contextual problems is one way that can be used to enable students to have the skills needed to live in the 21st century. Completion contextual problem requires a series of steps in order to properly answer the questions that are asked. The purpose of this study was to determine the steps performed students in solving contextual mathematics problem. The results showed that 75% students can not solve contextual mathematics problems precisely (unfinished). Students stop and feel that it was completed when they are able to solve problems mathematically, but mathematical solution has not answered the requested context.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to produce problems enrichment math for the 10th grade Senior High School to train high-level thinking is valid and practical as well as determine the effect of potential problems math enrichment for the 10th grade  that has been developed on the results of students' mathematics learning SMA Negeri 1 Palembang. The subjects were all students in 10th grade SMAN 1 Palembang. The method used is research development or Development Reserch through three stages: preliminary (preparatory stage and phase of development issues), formative evaluation or prototyping stage (stage of evaluation and revision phase) and the assessment stage. During the preparation stage (preliminary) conduct a review of the curriculum, determine the place and the subject of research, reviewing some of the literature, do designing item that will be developed. The item has the characteristics about the non routine, problematic, demanding reasoning, containing an association, or demanding communication skills do with prototyping. The next stage of formative evaluation: (1) self evaluation, (2) Expert Review, (3) one - to - one evaluation, (4) small group and (5) field test. Criteria for the success of this study is the product obtained in the form about math enrichment  for 10th grade valid and practical and has a potential effect. Prototype devices were developed about categorized valid and practical. Valid qualitatively illustrated by the results of the assessment validator, where almost all validators declared either by the content, construct and language. Valid quantitatively based analysis of items (the validity of the items) and practically drawn from the test results, which students can use the device with a good question (context recognizable, readable, does not give rise to a double interpretation, and according to the student's train of thought). Problem produced a total of 18 questions. The problems spread to the cognitive level of 3 to 5. Based on the development process is to be obtained that the prototype device developed about who has had the potential effects on the learning outcomes of high school students, it is seen from the test results about math enrichment to the learning outcomes of students with 32% category of excellent, 44% good category, 13% adequate and 3% less category.
