Abstract

Purpose – As critical thinking is a key competency in science education, this study employs a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing students' critical thinking skills. This study analyzed 21 articles published between 2017 and 2024. These articles specifically discuss the effectiveness of PBL implementation in enhancing students' critical thinking skills.Methodology – The selection criteria included peer-reviewed articles published between 2017 and 2024, which provided explicit numerical data (sample size, mean, standard deviation) and a direct focus on the impact of PBL on critical thinking skills. A random-effects model was chosen due to expected variability among studies, and the effect size was calculated using Hedges' g to ensure robust findings. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 29 to calculate the summary effect, analyze heterogeneity, construct a forest plot, and identify potential publication bias.Findings – The meta-analysis revealed a significant improvement in critical thinking skills for students who experienced PBL-based learning compared to conventional methods (summary effect = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.15-1.0, p = 0.01). This shows that 57% of learning with PBL models analyzed has a significant positive effect on students' critical thinking skills. The heterogeneity test indicated (I² value = 93,9% > 25%), suggesting moderate variability among the analyzed studies. Funnel plots and Egger's regression tests indicate no risk of publication bias.Contribution– These findings emphasize the importance of integrating PBL into science curricula to foster critical thinking skills. Educators should consider structured PBL frameworks, while policymakers could support teacher training initiatives to optimize implementation. Future studies may explore longitudinal effects and variations across different educational levels.

Abstract

A high failure rate in physics subjects is caused by students' inability to understand the material. The physics learning process certainly requires an appropriate learning approach. The learning analytics approach is one of the innovations in learning. It allows students to analyze problems. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the learning analytics approach's effect on improving students' multiple representation skills. This research is experimental. The validation of the lesson plan obtained excellent results based on two material experts and four practitioners. Furthermore, the empirical test was carried out on 504 students. The research design was the pretest-posttest control group design. The control and experimental groups were determined using cluster random sampling. The findings of this research include (1) the normality test results that are higher than 0.05, which means that the research data was normally distributed. (2) The homogeneity test results were higher than 0.05, which indicated that the data was homogeneous. (3) The paired sample T-test obtained a value lower than 0.05, which means that there was an influence of the multiple representation approach. (4) The N-gain value in the experimental class was higher than the control class. Lastly, (5) only 47.2% of students used graphical and mathematical representation skills. Based on these findings, the effect of the learning analytics approach on students' multiple representation skills was fairly good with moderate criteria. For further research, learning products or models can be developed to improve multiple representation skills focused on a combination of graphics and mathematics.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, has sparked interest in its application in education. This study aims to investigate the potential of ChatGPT in helping students understand and solve physics problems, focusing on the Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics and the Determining and Interpreting Resistive Electric Circuit Concepts Test. The study involved 25 physics education students who completed these tests independently and with ChatGPT's assistance. The results revealed that students with a strong foundational understanding and reflective abilities interacted more effectively with ChatGPT, leading to improved answers and deeper conceptual understanding. In contrast, students with weaker prior knowledge tended to accept ChatGPT’s answers without critical reflection, perpetuating errors. Furthermore, ChatGPT showed limitations in interpreting image-based questions, reading scales, and providing consistent responses to concept-specific queries. These findings suggest that while ChatGPT has the potential to enhance learning, it requires thoughtful integration, particularly in helping students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers are encouraged to use ChatGPT’s limitations to design assessments that minimize the risk of cheating and foster deeper understanding. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of combining AI tools with strong conceptual foundations and active reflection to optimize learning outcomes in physics education. Future research should focus on refining strategies for using AI in education to address its current limitations and enhance its effectiveness in complex learning scenarios.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) has been recognized as an effective instructional approach for enhancing conceptual understanding and 21st-century skills in physics education. However, there is a lack of systematic bibliometric studies that map the development, trends, and research gaps in this topic. This study aims to identify research areas that have been extensively explored, as well as those that remain underexplored within PjBL in Physics Education. The method employed is descriptive with bibliometric analysis using data from Scopus, through the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. The analysis was conducted using Publish or Perish (PoP) and VOSviewer software. From the 48 publications analyzed, it was found that the number of publications declined over the past three years, after peaking in 2021 due to the growing demand for 21st-century competency-based curricula. This decline is suspected to be related to implementation challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The distribution of affiliations and countries indicates that there are still institutions and nations not actively involved in this topic. Emerging research focuses, such as links to curriculum, scientific inquiry, and technology, present opportunities for further studies. The findings of this study highlight the need for expanding and deepening PjBL research in Physics Education across various national and institutional contexts.
