Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study is concerned with writing, focusing on the abridging sentences ofprécis writing used in Aesop Fables. This study was conducted by using descriptivequalitative design. There are ten fables of Aesop in this study taken from The Book ofAesop (Townsend: 1869). There were 103 forms. The result of data analysis showed thetotal number in types of abridging were: by reducing a clause to a phrase 55.34 %, byreducing a phrase to a word 10.68 %, change the direct speech to indirect speech 16.5%, and by reducing a clause to a word 17.48 %. It means that by reducing a clause to aphrase is the dominant types of abridging sentences used in Aesop fables. It is 52.7 %.The reason why abridging sentences by reducing a clause to a phrase is dominantbecause in all ten of the fables use many long clauses that can be reducing to phrases.There are many clauses which can be reducing to a simpler term of phrases. And theresult based on the context of the form were: human 9.2 %, animal 73.55 %, thing 5.75%, and situation 11.5 %. It means that the context of animal is the most dominantcontext. Then it is found that the ten fables are dominantly use the type of abridging byreducing a clause to a phrase in the context of animal.Keywords: Writing, Précis writing, Abridging Sentences*Graduate

Abstract

This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. This descriptive research attempted to decbribe the translation strategies which are used  in Ria Ricis™ YouTube account. The data of this research was the transcription of the videos in Ria Ricis™s Youtube account utterances, that was Indonesian. The researcher used a source of theories about politeness strategies by Yule™s theory to support the thesis. Some steps were undertaken during the data collection: the process of selecting, focusing on the important things, simplifying, abstracting and transforming the data that appear in transcription. The results showed that the most dominant type of politeness strategies is positive politeness strategy with 40 data (48%). The percentage of Bald On Record strategy was 24 data (29%). The percentage of Off Record strategy was 10 data (10%). The lowest percentage of politeness strategies is Negative Politeness with 9 data with 11%. The reason why the types of politeness strategies using in Ria Ricis™ YouTube account, instead of each politeness strategies has sub-strategies which explained those utterance contained politeness strategies.

Abstract

The objectives of this studywas to find out the cultural values of Batak Toba in the wedding ceremony. The study was conducted by using textual research. The data of this study were taken from Hula-hula utterances in the wedding ceremony of Batak Toba. It was focusing on giving tradition Batak Toba cloth worn covering shoulder event (mangulosi) to the groom™s family (boru). The data were analyzed by using theory of Harahap and Siahaan (1987). There were nine cultural values found in the wedding ceremony. They were kinship, religion, extended family, respect, wealth, modernization, justice, nurture, and conflict.

Abstract

The research discussed about politeness strategy used by male and female students in requesting on WhatsApp message. The aims of this study were: to find out the types of politeness strategy used by male and female students by using Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness theory, to find out the differences and reason of politeness strategy used by male and female students in requesting on WhatsApp. The descriptive qualitative method were used in this research, and the data were derived from the WhatsApp message script. The findings of the study showed that male students applied 3 politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987): bald-on record (21 sentences), positive politeness (8 sentences), negative politeness (3 sentences). The researcher also found that female students applied 4 politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987): bald-on record strategy (5 sentences), positive politeness (7 sentences), negative politeness (17 sentences), and off record (5 sentences). The significant difference in politeness strategies used by male and female students are that there is no off record strategy used by male students, they apply the bald-on record strategy more often, while female students are more varied in using of politeness strategies and mostly applied the negative politeness. The difference of male and female students politeness strategy in requesting on WhatsApp because each gender has own way in conveying their want. Male students were more direct when requesting to others, while female students were more indirect when requesting to others.

Abstract

This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. It was concerned with the description of data in the form of utterances by the main character in The Last of us part 2 Video Game (2020). In conducting this research, the researcher (1) found out the types of language function in The Last of us part 2 Video Games. (2) described the realization types of language function in The Last of us part 2 Video Games. In the application of the language function, the last of us part 2 video games utterances used Jakobson™s theory. The result showed first, that most dominant type of language function in Jakobson™s theory is Expressive Function with (37%). The percentage directive function is (32%). The percentage Metalinguistic function is (20%). The lowest percentage in language function that Referential function is (11%). Second, The realization of language function described, such as : Expressive Function, that is action from another character make a feeling to main character, for example : (Jesus! You almost gave me heart attack, Fuck!, Gotcha!!, Just banged up!), Directive Function, is about attempt to get someone to do something. For example: (You better run little shit1, Run Dina!, No!, okay!), Referential function, is the communication of information, for example (oh, there™s the ski lodge, that™s the one on Tommy and Joel™s route), Metalinguistic function explain about the answer is code itself, for example: (just another evacuated neighborhood).
