Abstract

Maternal health during pregnancy is affecting fetal health in the womb and after birth. This study was conducted to see how maternal fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and amniotic fluid volume in third semester correlate with baby birth weight and length. The design of this research was observasional in cohort program from third trimester pregnancy until delivery. Result showed that the rising of maternal fasting blood glucose in third trimester was predicted to significantly increasing the baby’s birth weight (b= 7,24, p= 0,025). Inversely, the increase in blood pressure during pregnancy had the potential to lower the weight of the baby (b= -13,94, p= 0,058) although not significanty proven in this study. The correlation between maternal amniotic fluid volume had not shown significant results with neither birth length nor weight of the offspring in this study. It is recommended that pregnant women could maintain their health and also conducted regular health checks of blood glucose, blood pressure, and amniotic fluid volume to avoid pregnancy adverse outcomes if detected.

Abstract

Background: The quality of water sources, sanitation, and hygiene have long been associated with the incidence of stunting in a household. Various studies show that this is also influenced by differences in access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in rural and urban areas. Objectives: This study aims to determine the condition of the quality of water sources, sanitation, and hygiene in household with stunted children under five in rural and urban areas. Methods: The study was conducted in June 2022 using cross-sectional method to 96 household with stunted children under five that were selected by systematic random sampling in Cianjur District and Sukabumi City. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive analysis and bivariate analysis were conducted to determine the distribution of use of water sources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices in household with stunted children under five based on the categories of improved sanitation facilities and drinking-water sources by World Health Organization and its differences in rural and urban areas. Results: The sources of drinking and cooking water used by the household with stunted children under five have been entirely improved sources. Most of the households in both areas had defecation facilities used only by household members. There were significant differences in the type of fecal waste disposal in household with stunted children under five in rural and urban areas. Majority of households in rural area (70.0%) already used septic tank for fecal waste disposal while majority of households in urban area (65.2%) disposed their fecal waste to river/lake/sea. Mothers’ handwashing practice at critical time were all above 80%, but only 33.6% of the households had separate handwashing facility and only 50.0% of them provide soap for handwashing. Conclusions: Based on the results, it is known that household with stunted children in rural and urban areas have used proper drinking water sources and have good hygiene practices. However, fecal disposal facilities in urban areas with high prevalence of stunting need to be improved as an effort to reduce stunting prevalence.

Abstract

Pregnancy outcomes are affected by many factors: nutrition and physical activity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and nutritional adequacy level of pregnant women in the third trimester with pregnancy outcomes, namely maternal fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure and amniotic fluid volume, and baby's birth weight and length. An observational study on a cohort was conducted on 34 pregnant women in their third trimester and followed until delivery in the Ciampea sub-district, Bogor, Indonesia. The data were processed through descriptive analysis for each variable. Bivariate tests between the predictor and outcome variables were performed using Pearson's correlation and Multiple Regression at 95% CI. Based on multiple regression analysis, we found that the samples' fasting blood glucose in the third trimester was predicted to be 36,9% positively affected by pre-pregnancy body mass index (b= 2,521; p= 0,009) and total physical activity during the third trimester (b= 0,055; p= 0,006). In conclusion, the nutritional adequacy level of macronutrients in the third trimester has not yet significantly affected pregnancy outcomes in this study. It is suggested that pregnant women should avoid prolonged sedentary activity and increase appropriate exercise to achieve maternal health and improve birth outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a global problem which increasing simultaneously. The high-fat accumulation in the body will result from mild chronic inflammation. Developing a local drink based on seagrapes (Caulerpa racemose) is thought to have a high antioxidant capacity and the potential to become an alternative therapeutic drink for obese people. Seagrapes are easily damaged, so proper drying is needed to maintain antioxidant potential and assisted by adding gum arabic to increase the acceptability. Objectives: To analyze the antioxidant capacity and sensory of sea grapes powder drink (Caulerpa racemose). Methods: The design experiment research was utterly randomized and only used one gum Arabic treatment with a 2.5, 5, and 10% concentration and three replication as sea grapes powder drink samples. The samples were analyzed to seek the antioxidant capacity of DPPH (2,2-diphenyi-1-picrylhydrazyl), CUPRAC (Cupric Ion Reducing Antioxidant Capacity), and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power). Then research data were analyzed by employing ANOVA  and Duncan's follow-up test. Results: The higher concentration of gum Arabic has significantly increased the antioxidant capacity. DPPH, CUPRAC, and FRAP values in 10% gum Arabic concentration were 13.21±0.1 mg/100 g, 25.26±0.5 mg, and 2.89±0.3mg/g. Based on the sensory test results, the panelists preferred the 10% gum Arabic concentration because the color is lighter, can minimize odor and viscosity, and taste better. Conclusions: Seagrapes powder drink with a concentration of 10% gum Arabic has the potential as a therapeutic obesity with the highest antioxidant capacity and is sensory acceptable.
