Abstract

Feed is a crucial factor in tilapia farming because it contributes 92% of the total production cost. This study aims to evaluate the digestibility and utilization of carbohydrates in low-protein feed supplemented with NSP enzymes and organic chromium. The research method employed a factorial completely randomized design with treatments of organic chromium (0, 1, 2) and NSP enzymes (0, 1). The study used 18 aquariums, each measuring 50×40×35 cm. The fish used were tilapia with an average weight of 33.09 ± 0.06 g per fish. The feed used was commercial feed supplemented with organic chromium and NSP enzymes. The study focused on digestibility performance, digestive enzyme activity, growth performance, and antioxidant status. The results showed that the treatments E1C1 and E0C2 resulted in better total digestibility, energy digestibility, and protein digestibility compared to the control and other treatments. Lipase, protease, and amylase enzymes in tilapia fed with the E1C1 treatment showed significantly higher results (P<0.05) compared to the control. Growth performance in tilapia fed with NSP enzymes and organic chromium did not show significant differences from the control (P>0.05). However, antioxidant status, specifically SOD and GPx, was significantly higher in the E0C1 treatment compared to the control (P<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that the addition of NSP enzymes and organic chromium to low-protein feed can improve digestibility and optimize carbohydrate utilization, with the best results achieved with the E1C1 treatment. Abstract

Cinnamon leaves contain active compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids which have antioxidant properties and play a role in lipid metabolism processes. This active substance is known to reduce liver fat levels and has the potential to increase the immune response in catfish. This research aims to determine the effect of adding cinnamon leaf extract to feed on liver fat levels and the health of catfish. Cinnamon leaf extract was added to the feed at five different doses, namely 0 g/kg (control), 0.5 g/kg, 1 g/kg, 2 g/kg, and 4 g/kg feed. The results of the study showed that the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed reduced the fat content in the liver of catfish as seen from the decrease in fat degeneration in the liver of catfish compared to the control. Total erythrocytes, hemoglobin levels and hematocrit levels of fish treated with the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed were lower and significantly different (P<0.05) compared to controls, but total leukocytes were not significantly different between treatment and control.

Abstract

Vannamei shrimp is one of the most economically valuable aquaculture commodities in Indonesia. One of the pathogenic bacteria that is often found in vannamei shrimp farming is Vibrio parahaemolyticus. This study aimed to analyze the effectivity of Lactobacillus paracasei probiotics and paraprobiotics through feed with different cell densities on growth, and immune responses infected with V. parahaemolyticus. Vannamei shrimp of size 0.63 ± 0.01 were reared in containers with a stocking density of 15 shrimp per container and supplemented feed for 30 days. The research design consisted of six treatments, each with three replicates, namely (K-) feeding without supplements and injected with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), (K+) feeding without supplements and infected with V. parahaemolyticus (104 CFU/mL), (PRI) feeding with 1% (v/w) probiotic L. paracasei with cell density of 106 CFU/mL, (PRII) 1% (v/w) probiotic L. paracasei cell density 109 CFU/mL, (PAI) 1% (v/w) paraprobiotic L. paracasei cell density 106 CFU/mL, (PAII) 1% (v/w) paraprobiotic L. paracasei cell density 109 CFU/mL. All treatments, except K-, were infected with V. parahaemolyticus (104 CFU/mL). Vannamei shrimp rearing was continued post the challenge test with V. parahaemolyticus which was conducted up to six days post injection. The results showed that feeding both probiotic and paraprobiotic L. paracasei through feed has improved growth, immune response, protein fat retention, and digestive enzyme activity of vannamei shrimp better than those of control. As the recommendation for the disease control of V. parahaemolyticus is feed supplementation with 1% (v/w) probiotic L. paracasei with cell density of 109 CFU/mL. Keywords: Lactobacillus paracasei, paraprobiotic, probiotic, vannamei shrimp, Vibrio parahaemolyticus ABSTRAK Udang vaname merupakan salah satu komoditas akuakultur yang bernilai ekonomis tinggi di Indonesia. Abstract

The objective of the study was to test dietary supplementation of yacon leaf on the carbohydrate utilization, growth performance, and glucose tolerance of striped catfish during the early-stage period. Fish were fed with five different levels of yacon leaf supplementation (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%) for nine weeks. Three hundred striped catfish (initial mean body weight: 14 ± 0.14 g) were maintained in 15 rectangular net cages. The results showed that the specific growth rate of fish with yacon leaf supplementation (3.46-3.79%) was higher than the control fish (3.19%) also the feed efficiency value. The highest protein retention was found on 1% yacon leaf fish diet, while the highest lipid retention was found on 1.5%. The blood glucose post-prandial was rise slower than the control fish. The glucose tolerance test also obtained less time to return to basal level after the glucose load. The increased of enzymatic were also present at the supplemented fish. The liver lipid and glycogen concentration was decreased, and the hepatic somatic index was increased. The blood biochemistry showed the lower level of total protein plasma and albumin in supplemented fish, and higher triglyceride and cholesterol levels due to the replenishment of energy storage in adipose tissues while fasting. Therefore, this study concludes that the yacon leaf dietary supplementation has the potential to improve carbohydrate utilization by promoting glucose use efficiently as the main energy, while protein can be utilized for growth. Our data suggest that the best level of yacon leaf supplementation in fish diets is 1.36%.
