Abstract

The goal of this study was to discover the optimal protein and lipid levels for increasing the growth performance of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. A 2×2 randomized factorial design was used for this research, and two treatment factors were used: the protein level (28% and 32%) and the lipid level (6% and 8%). So, there were four test treatments and carried out with three replications. Nile tilapia with an average body weight of 5.60 ± 0.06 g were grown in a 900×45×35 cm3 aquarium at a density of 20 fish/aquarium. The experimental fish were grown for 60 days and fed three times daily until they appeared to be satisfied. Parameters evaluated in this study were growth performance and blood chemistry. The fish fed with diet 32;8 showed significantly higher growth than other treatments. Plasma protein in the fish fed with 32;6 diets were higher than those of plasma triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, and low density lipoprotein content were the same among the treatments. The result shows that feed 28;8 has the best protein efficiency ratio and protein retention. Abstract

Striped catfish meat has a high-fat content which is undesirable to markets and customers alike and needs to be reduced. This study aims to evaluate the effect of dietary L-carnitine and cinnamon powder on reducing the fat content of striped catfish meat in the grow-out stage. Striped catfish measuring 125.4 ± 7.85 g and 24.71 ± 0.68 cm body length were kept for 60 days in a hapa with size 2 x 1 x 1 m3. Thefish were fed three times a day at satiation with the following treatments: control (K), the addition of L-carnitine 1 g kg-1 (LK 1), L-carnitine 2 g kg-1 (LK 2), cinnamon 5 g kg-1 (KM 5) and cinnamon 10 g kg-1 (KM 10). Sampling was conducted on the initial, middle and final day for meat fat content analysis. The parameters observed were meat fat and meat texture. The results showed that dietary KM 10 significantly reduced meat fat content compared to controls on the 30th and it showed a more significant reduction, namely 51.06% and 42.55%, in the treatment LK 2 and KM 10 after 60 days treatment. The hepatosomatic index value also decreased, followed by decreased liver fat levels. The lower values of meat hardness imply an increase in meat quality. It can be concluded that the application of dietary cinnamon powder at 10 g kg-1 (KM 10) is the best level to reduce the fat content of striped catfish meat in meeting the fillet standards. This cinnamon has excellent potential to be developed as a feed additive to improve the quality of striped catfish meat in the rearing phase.

Abstract

The cannibal behavior of Asian redtail catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) is a problem in the hatchery. One approach that has been used to control cannibalism in fish is the use of tryptophan. This study aimed to determine the effect of tryptophan on the incidence of cannibalism and the content of steroid hormones in Asian redtail catfish juveniles. The study was conducted using the fish with a body length of 4.98±0.14 cm reared in aquariums with a water volume of 20 L with a density of 3 fish per L. Fish were given commercial feed (40% protein) supplemented with tryptophan with different concentrations, namely without tryptophan supplementation (A), tryptophan supplementation 0.25% (B), tryptophan supplementation 0.5% (C), tryptophan supplementation 0.75% (D), and tryptophan supplementation 1% (E). Each treatment consisted of three replications. Feed were given four times a day at satiation level. Parameters observed were cannibal type, cannibal index, normal mortality, survival rate, growth performance, and hormone concentration (estradiol, testosterone, and cortisol). The results showed that giving tryptophan through feed decreased the incidence of cannibalism and increased the survival of Asian redtail catfish juveniles. The addition of tryptophan to the feed decreased the concentration of estradiol in the body of fish and it is associated with a decrease in the incidence of cannibalism, thereby improving survival.  Furthermore, the supplementation of tryptophan also increased growth performance. The results of this study showed that supplementation of 0.50-0.75% tryptophan in feed was effective in reducing the incidence of cannibals in Asian redtail catfish juveniles.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTS- Taurine improves eye development in golden rabbitfish larvae- Enhanced growth performance with taurine-enriched rotifers- Taurine positively impacts fish eye and body growthABSTRACTGolden rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) is an emerging species for aquaculture industry, despite constrains faced on commercial scale of seed production due to the high mortality during the first-feeding stage. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of taurine through enrichment of rotifers as live-feed on eye development and growth performance of larval golden rabbitfish. Observation of eye development was carried out by measuring eye diameter of the larva and development of the retina based on histology assessment. Growth performance was measured for absolute growth and fin development of the larvae and survival rate. The results showed that taurine-enriched rotifer generally provided better performances for eye development and growth of larval golden rabbitfish compared with control (without taurine). Increase of taurine dose up to 0.050 g/L resulted in an increase of eye diameter, absolute growth, fin development and survival rate. Further increased increment of the taurine tended to decrease the values of the measured parameters. The eye diameter of larval golden rabbitfish fed with 0.050 g/L taurine-enriched rotifer was significantly wider (106.1±9.8 µm) (P < 0.05) compared with control (58.2±14.3 µm), but did not significantly differ from other doses of taurine (P > 0.05). Body width of larvae fed with 0.050 g/L taurine-enriched rotifer was significantly higher (127.3±14.6 µm) (P < 0.05) compared with control (98.8±18.3 µm). In regard to eye development, growth performances (total length, fin development and survival rate), dose of taurine for rotifer enrichment fed to larval golden rabbitfish Siganus guttatus was 0.050 g/L.

Abstract

Efficient dietary protein utilization is essential to reduce feed costs and environmental impacts in sustainable aquaculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of cinnamaldehyde (CA) supplementation in feed with various energy-to-protein (E:P) ratios on the chemical composition of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. The five feed formulas that made up the treatment feed were as follows: 28:13-C0 (28 % Protein with an E:P ratio of 13 and CIN 0 g kg-1); 25:14-C1 (25 % protein with an E:P ratio of 14 and CIN 1.2 g kg-1); 25:14-C2 (25 % protein with an E:P ratio of 14 and CIN 1.7 g kg-1); 25:15-C1 (25 % protein with an E:P ratio of 15 and CIN 1.2 g kg-1); and 25:15-C2 (25 % Protein with an E:P ratio of 15 and CIN 1.7 g kg-1). Striped catfish weighing 28.06 ± 0.19 g were placed in a hapa (2 × 1 × 1 m3) at a density of 25 fish per cage. Fish were fed to apparent satiation three times daily for 60 d. The 25:14-C2, 25:15-C1, and 25:15-C2 diets increased albumin levels and reduced cholesterol, while 25:15-C2 also yielded the highest total protein and lowest triglyceride levels. Growth performance and feed efficiency were comparable among 28:13-C0, 25:14-C2, 25:15-C1, and 25:15-C2 (final weight: 141.62–143.75 g; FCR: 1.16–1.19). Protein efficiency ratio was highest in 25:15-C1 and 25:15-C2, whereas protein retention peaked in 25:14-C2. The hepatosomatic index was elevated in 25:14-C1, 25:14-C2, and 25:15-C1. Body lipid content was highest in 25:15-C1, while muscle lipid content was lowest in 25:14-C2 and 25:15-C1. Reducing dietary protein from 28 % to 25 % did not compromise growth performance at the E:P ratio level of 15 with a supplementation of 1.2 g kg-1 CIN.

Abstract

Copper (Cu-O) is a micromineral required in small amounts in the body, yet it plays an important role in the metabolism and health of fish. This study aimed to evaluate the growth performance of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) fed diets supplemented with organic copper (Cu-O). Four treatments were tested: K (control, without Cu-O), Cu-O 1 (1 mg kg⁻¹ Cu-O), Cu-O 2 (2 mg kg⁻¹ Cu-O), and Cu-O 3 (3 mg kg⁻¹ Cu-O). Fifteen tilapia with an average initial weight of 8.75 ± 0.02 g were reared in aquaria (60 × 50 × 40 cm, water depth 30 cm) for 60 days. Fish were fed to satiation three times daily. The results showed that the growth parameters of tilapia fed Cu-O-supplemented diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of the control. The optimal dose of Cu-O supplementation was found to be 2 mg kg⁻¹ feed; subsequent studies should investigate interspecies variations and refine dosage recommendations accordingly.

Abstract

Siganid is better known as rabbit fish. In hatcheries, constraint that is still faced is the low survival, which was assumed to occur because of the timing for initial feeding is not solidly known. This research aimed to examine the best initial feeding time for siganus, based on evaluation on eyes and yolk reserves during the transition. The research was conducted from 24-29 March 2021 in IPUW Barru, South Sulawesi. Larvae were obtained from the second progeny (G2) of domesticated Siganus guttatus. Larvae were reared for 5-6 days without feeding. Evaluated parameters include eyes diameter and yolk reserves. Samples were observed with microscope and will be explained descriptively. Water quality parameters were measured, namely DO, salinity, pH and temperature. Eyes diameter at 6 Hour After Hatching (HAH) ranges between 81.5-128.9 m, 13 HAH= 125.5-167.7 m, 24 HAH= 138.2-213.9 m, two days after hatching 2 Day After Hatching (DAH) = 113.6-193.1 m, 3 DAH= 163.1-219.2 m, 4 DAH= 190.4-212.6 m. Yolk reserves diameter ranged between 137-194m (6 HAH), 13 HAH= 152-191m, 24 HAH= 94.0-185m, 2 DAH= 75.3-99.63m, 3 DAH= 42.33-87.58m, 4 DAH= 38.17-55.59m. After age 5 DAH, there are no larvae found alive (dead). Eyes developed at age 6 HAH and experienced pigmentation at age 24 HAH. Conversely, yolk reserves diameters were getting smaller since age 24 HAH and completely disappear at age 4 DAH. It indicates that eyes effectively see feeds at age 2 DAH. Therefore, initial feeding should be started. The water quality parameters measured were still in normal conditions according to the life of S. guttatus larvae. From this research, it can be concluded that eyes have been well functioned at age 2 DAH and yolk reserves was finished at age 4 DAH. Therefore, the initial feeding should be done at the age of 2 DAH.Keywords:Development, Siganus guttatus larvae,Transition

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the culture performance of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) that have been treated with 17-methyltestosterone (MT) and without MT (w-MT), feed with different protein levels (20, 24, and 28%) and recombinant Epinephelus lanceolatus growth hormone (rElGH)-diet. The research was conducted in 9 treatments and triplicate. Tilapia larvae were soaked twice, totaling 500 larvae, at the age of 10 days after hatching (DAH) and the age of 14 DAH was soaked for 4 hours using 1/l MT 2 mg/l solution. Fish maintenance was conducted in an aquarium of 1.0x0.5x0.5 m3 in the first month, and three months later in net cages (2.0x2.0x1.5 m3). Daily growth rate (DGR) and biomass gain (BG) were increased in line with increasing feed protein content and rElGH supplementation. The highest DGR and BG values were MT+28+rElGH (P 0.05) treatment. The highest feed consumption and the lowest feed conversion ratio were also obtained in the MT+28+rElGH treatment (P 0.05). Fish survival was ranged from 79.89 to 90.28% (P 0.05). The highest profit potential was found in the MT+28+rElGH treatment. The efficient aquaculture can be obtained by feeding sex-reversed tilapia at a protein level of 28% and a diet supplemented with rElGH.Keywords:Feed conversion ratioGrowth hormoneProtein retention17-methyltestosterone
