Abstract

Third-year pre-service teachers in the English language education department in Indonesia may feel uncertain about their mental readiness to become English teachers. Although they have a high-intermediate level of English proficiency, they often fear facing the challenges of managing the class and showcasing mental readiness to become teachers. Therefore, this study explores the third-year Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers’ mental readiness to become teachers, and the need to emphasize mental readiness and grit to successful teaching practice. Twenty-three EFL pre-service teachers enrolled a microteaching course, as one of the teaching practice components in the English language education curriculum, participated in this study. They were asked to write structured reflections on their mental readiness, and their reflections were thoroughly examined using a narrative analysis. The results showed that the pre-service teachers expressed concern about their ability to manage the class and their students, which reflects their mental unreadiness to be the person in charge in the classroom. Moreover, the pre-service teachers highlighted the need to be more mentally aware of their attitude and grit in shaping their mental readiness to teach. This study contributes to a larger context-specific understanding of the roles of the English teacher education programs at the university level in assisting pre-service English teachers to achieve mental readiness and grit that can help them address the challenges.

Abstract

Improving the production of organic rice can be achieved by using certified superior seed varieties. The research aimed to test the adaptability of several superior rice varieties in organic farming systems to obtain varieties suitable for rice growth and yield in the Cipatujah District of Tasikmalaya Regency. A single-factor randomized complete block design was used in this study to test 3 superior varieties, namely Ciherang, Inpari 32, and Mekongga varieties. Each treatment was replicated 20 plots, resulting in a total of 60 experimental plots. The analysis results indicated that the soil at the demonstration plot location met land suitability and rice plant growth requirements with S1 (very suitable) criteria based on parameters such as pH, organic carbon content (C-organic), nutrient content of Nitrogen, Phosphor, and Potassium, bulk density, particle density, porosity, and soil texture. The superior variety treatments had a significant impact on plant height growth, although there were no significant differences observed in terms of tiller number, productive tiller number, grain yield per hill, filled grain per hill, grain weight per hill, and 1000-grain weight. The Ciherang variety showed the highest plant growth response and larger yield components compared to Mekongga and Inpari 32. The use of certified seeds in organic rice cultivation practices was proven to yield higher results compared to seeds from previous cultivation practices.

Abstract

This study, titled Inclusive Education and Papuan Literature for Diversity and Equality, aims to develop inclusive education teaching materials grounded in Papuan literary culture to foster values of equality and diversity in the educational context of Eastern Indonesia. Using a research and development (R&D) approach, the study adopts Plomp’s model, consisting of five systematic phases: initial investigation, design, realization, test-evaluation-revision, and implementation. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Sorong Regency, involving 21 Grade VII students. Data were gathered through expert validation—covering content, media, and language aspects—and teacher feedback on the practicality of the materials. The effectiveness test revealed an improvement in student learning outcomes, with a gain score of 0.46, categorized as moderate (0.3–0.7 range). Theoretically, this study contributes to the integration of local cultural narratives into inclusive literacy instruction, strengthening frameworks of multicultural and place-based learning. Its novelty lies in leveraging the literary richness of Papua to develop adaptive, inclusive literacy materials. Practically, the resulting product serves as a validated, practical, and effective model applicable in 3T (frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged) regions, promoting students' cultural identity, tolerance, and active engagement in learning.
