Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify students’ problem-solving skills in Newton’s laws through the implementation of the 5E learning cycle in the classroom. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. Data on problem-solving skills were collected from students’ pre-test and post-test responses to two essay questions. The indicator with the highest percentage of problem-solving skills was useful description (83% of students), while the indicator with the lowest percentage was specific application of physics (33% of students). Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, the Wilcoxon test was utilized. The results indicated a significant difference in students’ problem-solving abilities between the pretest and posttest, with a significance value less than 0.05. Consequently, normalized-gain scores were used to further evaluate the improvement in students’ problem-solving skills following the 5E learning cycle. The findings reveal an increase in problem-solving skills, with an N-Gain of 0.63, categorized as medium. This suggests that the 5E learning cycle effectively enhances students’ problem-solving abilities.DOI: 10.17977/jps.v12i42024p152

Abstract

Conceptual understanding is a crucial area in physics education research, focusing on students’ comprehension of fundamental principles. Force and motion, integral topics within this field, are inherently linked to students’ daily experiences. Numerous studies have identified the persistence of common sense knowledge among students. This research presents a literature review aimed at identifying such consistently held misconceptions. We analyzed 17 papers sourced from Publish or Perish 8, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Our analysis revealed that the concepts of impetus and active force are the most persistent forms of common sense knowledge, influenced by real-life experiences. Additionally, students’ difficulties with kinematics tend to diminish over time. With advancements in technology and educational methodologies, it is anticipated that these incorrect common sense understandings can be progressively reduced and eventually eliminated.DOI: https://doi.org/10.17977/jps.v11i42023p123

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Conceptual Problem Solving-based learning in improving student conceptual understanding of Newtonian mechanics. The quasi-experimental method with a nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest design was used to compare students conceptual in the experimental and control class. The subjects in this study were 69 first-year students of the Physics Education study program at one of the state universities in Yogyakarta. Force Concept inventories are used to assess students conceptual understanding of Newtonian mechanics. The findings revealed that there was significant difference in the increase in students conceptual understanding between the experimental and control groups. The increase in conceptual mismatch in experimental class students using CPS learning was higher (N-gain = 0.33) compared to control class students using direct instruction learning (N-gain = 0.11), although both groups experienced an increase. This study provides a real picture that the CPS technique can be used as a more successful strategy to improve the quality of physics learning, especially in improving knowledge of basic topics that are often difficult for students to understand, one of which is Newton's Law.
