Abstract

AbstractThis research discussed the students’ reading comprehension on recount text. The problem was on comprehending the specific information of recount text. The 39 students of class VIIIB participated in this research. The researcher observed the students’ improvement in reading comprehension by collecting data through observation checklist, field notes and reading test. The students’ attitude towards the learning process was gathered by observation checklist and field note. The data of reading recount text was obtained by reading test which was administered through scoring rubric. Based on the data, the students showed improvement in the process of reading recount text. In cycle I, they could explore the generic structure and language features of the story through jigsaw puzzle game, but less in organizing the time. They took very long time to finish the puzzle and the test. The researcher conducted the cycle II which resulted that, the students could answer the questions and do jigsaw puzzle to comprehend the reading text. The students also got motivation during learning through the game. From all of the result, it can be inferred that jigsaw puzzle can improve students’ reading comprehension on recount text. Key words: Reading Comprehension, Recount Text, Jigsaw Puzzle Game

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to design E-PON; an electronic presentation as a teaching and learning media of narrative text. The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not E-PON as the supplementary teaching media is useable to teach narrative text in twelfth grade students of senior high school. The form of this research is developmental research. This developmental research was conducted to produce innovate teaching material. The method of this research consists of four phases namely analyzing, designing, developing, and implementing or called ADDI. The designed product was completed by combining West Kalimantan’s local story with the electronic presentation to teach narrative text. The E-PON was designed for about 45 minutes. The completed research was implemented in the first semester of twelfth grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Sambas. There were 35 students who actively involved in this research. To sum up, it is found that E-PON is usable for teaching narrative text in twelfth grade students of senior high school.Keywords: Development Research, E-PON, Narrative Text

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to find out whether the firing line strategy is effective to teach reading comprehension. The researcher conducts a pre-experimental study entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Firing Line Strategy to Teach Reading Comprehension”. The participicants of this research were the eight grade students of SMP Islam Tazkiyah Pontianak. In the research, the researcher use a pre-experimental study (one group pre-test post-test design). The data in this research were gathered by using measurement technique and statistical analysis. As a result, there were differences in the average post-test results. It was proven by the results of TTable TArithmatic = 2,042 and 9,406 (9,406 > 2,042). It was found out that the reading comprehension of students after using firing line strategy was higher than before using it, and the effect size proved the results by 1,59. In conclusion, the firing line strategy is effective to teach reading comprehension to the eight grade students of SMP Islam Tazkiyah Pontianak.  Keywords: Firing Line Strategy, Pre-Exprimental Study, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted based on the problems found from observation on teaching and learning process. This research aimed to investigate how Wordless Picture Book improved students’ writing skill on recount text to the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang in academic year 2017/2018. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research and the subject was the eighth grade students in class VIII D. In collecting the data, the writer used observation checklist table, field note and writing test. The result showed that students’ problems in writing recount text such as organization of the text, using simple past tense and students’ interest in writing recount text had been solved by using Wordless Picture Book as the teaching medium. The students’ ability to organize the text improved through the chronological pictures, students’ ability in using simple past tense improved through events within pictures and students’ interest in writing recount text improved through cartoon pictures within Wordless Picture Book. It can be concluded that Wordless Picture Book can be used as a medium to improve students’ writing skill on recount text such as organization of the text, using simple past tense sentence and students’ interest in learning writing recount text. Keywords: Wordless Picture Book, Recount Text, Writing Skill.

Abstract

Abstract This research was done to investigate the use of comic strips to improve the students? vocabulary in teaching narrative text. The form of this research is a classroom action research, in which the subject is the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Putussibau in academic year 2017/2018. The subjects of this research were 24 students in VIII B. The data were collected from the students? score in test, observation checklist, and field notes. The students? achievement towards the learning process was gathered by observation checklist and field note. The data of vocabulary mastery was obtained by the test. Based on data, the students showed improvement in the teaching process. There were two cycles in conducting this research. In the first cycle, the students? mean score was 59,79. The result were classified as ?poor? level. In the second cycle, the students? mean score was 78, 75. The result was classified as ?Average? level. The students were easier in understanding the meaning of the new vocabulary, and also the students are easier in understanding the text. The students? vocabulary of the eighth grade students of class VIII B of SMPN 2 Putussibau in academic year 2017/2018 improved by using comic strips in teaching narrative text.Keywords : Improving, Vocabulary, Comic Strips.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to determine whether students’ abilities in using present perfect continuous tense can be improved through contextual teaching and learning and to explain the implementation of contextual teaching and learning in teaching present perfect continuous tense sentences to tenth grade students of Social Science at Sekolah Kristen AbdiWacana Pontianak. This research is based on a preliminary study which shows that the students still have lack of understanding of grammar patterns, especially in present perfect continuous tense sentences.This study implemented Classroom Action Research applied to address students’ problem in understanding and using present perfect continuous tense sentences. This study follows the basic pattern of Kurt Lewin and it is carried out in two cycles. The subjects in this study were students of class X IPS in SMA Kristen AbdiWacana Pontianak. The techniques used in collecting data were observation notes, interviews, questionnaires and tests. The result of this study indicates that the implementation of contextual teaching and learning was declared successful according to the achievement of criteria of success. The first criterion is that majority of students can reach a score ≥70, the second criterion is that the students were more active in learning activities.  Key Words: Classroom Action Research, Contextual Teaching and Learning, Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Abstract

AbstractThis thesis aimed to know the use of picture series in power point presentation in improving students’ writing in narrative text to the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak. This study was conducted through classroom action research. The subject of this research was 40 students of class X A. The writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. The writer did three cycles in this research. The data collected through qualitative and quantitative approach. The result of this study showed that the use of picture series in power point presentation can improve the students’ writing in narrative text. Based on the qualitative data, the use of picture series in power point presentation as the media in teaching and learning process helped the students to enjoy and get more attention to follow the lesson. Through picture series the students became more active and involved in teaching learning process. By looking at the order of the picture series in power point presentation the students were able to generate and develop their ideas. Based on quantitative data, the students also gained significant improvement in their writing performance. It could be seen that the students’ writing ability improve from first cycle to the third cycle. It can be concluded that picture series in power point presentation proved the students’ writing ability of tenth A grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak. Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to measure the correlation between students’ frequency of watching Attack on Titan with their reading comprehension of third-semester Student of English Language Education Study Program Tanjungpura University Academic Year 2018/2019. The problem of this research was design to investigate the correlation between two variables. This research applied correlation method. The sample was 30 students of three semesters. The technique to collect the data was measurement technique. The form of test was multiple choices consist of 30 items of reading comprehension. The hypothesis was tested by using t-test formula. The result of this calculation shows that t-observed was 7.08, it is higher than t-table 2.46 with df= n-2 (28) in level of significance 0.01. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Finally, The result of the calculation showed that the value of coefficient correlation between students’ frequency of watching Attack on Titan and their reading comprehension was 0.80. In conclusion, the students' frequency of watching Attack on Titan has positive correlation with their reading comprehension.000Key words: Classroom Action Research, Reading Comprehension, Recount                                 Texts, Reciprocal Teaching Technique

Abstract

AbstractMany types of learning strategies can be used by the language learners to make the learning process running well. However, in doing the practice the learners are identified limited types of learning strategies and it makes them face many problems in learning. The aims of the study is to find the typical learning strategies used by the Alumnus of English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty Tanjungpura University in speaking English. The result of the study showed that the alumnus of English Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty Tanjungpura University used singing english song, exploring a book, and  watching western movies as the activities to employ her speaking skill and from that activity she can develop her speaking skill. Thus, the learner of English Department are suggested to ap  ply many strategies. For this reasearch the socio- affective strategies should be the most suitable strategy practiced by the alumni. Keywords: Learning strategies, Post formal study, Speaking Performance

Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed to find out whether Relay on Message Game could affectstudents’ listening comprehension of descriptive texts or not and how the effect of Relayon Message Game to the students’ listening comprehension of descriptive texts is.This research was a pre-experimental research consisting of 2 treatments.The test was applied twice at the beginning (pre-test) and at the end (post-test).The treatments were given two times.The sample of this research was 35 students of class VII I selected by using cluster random sampling.The tests were analyzed by using SPSS and effect size formula.The result of this research was analyzed by t-test.The result of t-test shows that t-ratio 8.56 is higher than t-critical 2.032 on table distribution with α = 0.05. The research findings show that teaching using Relay on Message Game affected the students’ listening comprehension of descriptive texts significantly.It is recommended to use Relay on Message Game to teach listening comprehension especially on descriptive texts.Key Words:Relay on Message, Games, Listening comprehension
