Abstract

Abstract

Low psychological well-being and elevated help-seeking behaviors among students in Islamic boarding schools underscore the necessity for effective psychological support systems. This study assesses the effectiveness of a character strengths-based peer counseling intervention in enhancing students' psychological well-being within Islamic boarding school settings. Grounded in the principles of positive psychology and aligned with Islamic educational values, the intervention emphasizes five core character strengths (gratitude, hope, zest, curiosity, and love) delivered through a peer counseling framework. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 81 first-year students (ages 13-17) from three pesantren in Semarang, randomly assigned to experimental (n = 45) and control (n = 36) groups. The Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1989) was used to measure six dimensions of well-being. Data were analyzed via Two-Way ANOVA to evaluate the intervention's impact over time. Results indicated significant improvements in psychological well-being within the experimental group (p < .01), with a notable post-test mean score increase of 13.53 points, interaction effect with η²p = 0.049. This value approaches the moderate category. These findings substantiate that character strengths-based peer counseling is an effective and culturally appropriate intervention for promoting mental health in faith-based educational environments. The study contributes to applying positive psychology in non-Western contexts, emphasizing the potential of peer-led models to enhance adolescents' emotional resilience, interpersonal relationships, and religious character development. The study's limitations and potential directions for future research are also discussed to improve the generalizability and sustainability of the intervention.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of group guidance services using the problem-solving method in addressing interpersonal conflicts among 10th-grade students. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to synthesize empirical findings comprehensively, including stages such as formulating research questions, determining keywords, searching literature through Google Scholar, Portal Garuda, and accredited guidance and counseling journals, selecting articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, assessing study quality, extracting data, and conducting narrative synthesis analysis. The inclusion criteria consist of original research articles published within the last five to ten years focusing on group guidance, problem-solving methods, interpersonal conflicts, and secondary school students, while irrelevant studies, those lacking clear intervention procedures, or not focusing on secondary school students are excluded. The results indicate that group guidance with the problem-solving method is effective in enhancing students’ ability to identify root causes of problems, manage emotions, develop assertive communication, and formulate rational and cooperative solutions to peer conflicts, as well as improving self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, learning motivation, positive self-concept, and reducing aggressive behavior. Therefore, it is recommended that guidance and counseling teachers integrate the problem-solving method in a structured, continuous, and contextual manner within group services to support students’ social, emotional, and academic development.

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental phase vulnerable to various psychological problems due to complex emotional, social, and biological changes. Therefore, interventions are needed to help adolescents understand and manage their psychological conditions adaptively. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of psychoeducational services in addressing psychological problems in adolescents through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. The study was conducted following the Kitchenham protocol, which includes the stages of identification, selection, quality evaluation, and synthesis of article data. Literature searches were conducted through Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar databases with a publication range of 2016–2026. A total of 13 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis techniques to identify the form of intervention, type of psychological problem, implementation media, and the effectiveness of psychoeducational services. The results showed that psychoeducation is effective in reducing post-traumatic symptoms, addressing alexithymia, managing psychosomatic disorders, and preventing suicidal ideation in adolescents. In addition, school-based psychoeducation and digital platforms have been shown to increase the accessibility of mental health services. These findings confirm that psychoeducation is an important preventive and curative strategy in supporting the psychological well-being of adolescents.

Abstract

Anxiety and depression are global mental health challenges that require preventive and accessible interventions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of psychoeducational interventions for anxiety and depression. The method used was a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA protocol, analyzing 12 international empirical articles (2016–2026) obtained from the ScienceDirect, Sage, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley databases. The review results indicate that psychoeducation effectively reduces cognitive distortions, automatic thoughts, and improves depression literacy and psychological well-being, among clinical patients, students, and family caregivers. This intervention has proven to be flexible, capable of being delivered through both in-person formats and self-directed digital platforms with comparable outcomes. However, its effectiveness is influenced by the duration of the intervention, sociocultural barriers, societal stigma, and the complexity of the subjects’ conditions. The study’s conclusions affirm that psychoeducation is an adaptive and flexible method for improving mental health literacy and self-efficacy. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive synthesis of the transformation of digital psychoeducation as a solution for expanding access to integrated mental health services

Abstract

Objective: To analyze and compare the psychological well-being of adolescents in regular and boarding schools in Indonesia. The findings are expected to provide evidence-based guidance for school counselors to identify adolescents' most urgent psychological needs and to optimize counseling services tailored to the characteristics of each school setting. Method: A quantitative study employing a cross-sectional group-comparison survey design was conducted. The participants comprised 798 adolescents, including 399 students from regular schools and 399 from boarding schools at the junior and senior high school levels. Data were collected using the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS). The data were analyzed through normality testing and an independent-samples t-test to examine differences in psychological well-being between the two groups. Results: The findings revealed no significant difference in overall psychological well-being between adolescents in regular schools and those in boarding schools (p > .05). Although students in regular schools had a slightly higher mean score, the difference was not statistically significant. Descriptive analysis showed that self-acceptance was the weakest dimension among students in regular schools, whereas autonomy was the weakest dimension among students in boarding schools. Positive relationships with others represented the strongest dimension in both school types. Novelty: Extending previous research by directly comparing adolescents' psychological well-being across regular and boarding school contexts while identifying the most urgent psychological dimensions requiring intervention in each setting. The findings have practical implications for school counselors designing targeted interventions that focus on self-acceptance in regular schools and autonomy in boarding schools. These insights also offer important implications for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by informing school-based mental health strategies that support adolescents' psychological well-being and healthy development.
