Abstract

The quality of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in schools plays a crucial role in shaping the character and morals of Generation Z (Gen Z), who are growing up in the era of rapid digitalization. This article presents a critical review from an academic perspective on the quality of PAI, focusing on four main aspects: curriculum, management, supervision, and quality outcomes in the school environment. Digitalization offers significant opportunities and challenges, particularly in the relevance of teaching materials, the effectiveness of institutional management, professional supervision of teachers, and the achievement of educational goals. This analysis uses the framework of contemporary Islamic education and management figures to offer rational arguments and proactive solutions so that PAI can produce graduates who are not only digitally proficient but also strong in faith and noble character. The impact of quality PAI on Gen Z is discussed as key to preparing them to become adaptive and responsible agents of change. Keywords: Quality of Islamic Religious Education, Digital Era, Generation Z, Islamic Religious Education Curriculum, Islamic Education Management, Educational Supervision

Abstract

Curriculum is a fundamental component of the education system that determines the direction, content, and quality of learning in schools. This conceptual article aims to analyze the philosophical, juridical, conceptual, theoretical, and empirical foundations that underlie the development of the 2013 Curriculum in Indonesia. Using a library research approach, the study explores the relationship between national education goals and curriculum design principles. Findings indicate that the 2013 Curriculum is supported by philosophical foundations rooted in Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, juridical legitimacy through educational laws, conceptual frameworks emphasizing competence and scientific learning approaches, theoretical bases derived from modern learning theories, and empirical evidence from educational practice. The article concludes that the integration of these five foundations ensures that the 2013 Curriculum aligns with the vision of national education in shaping holistic, competent, and character-based learners. Keywords: Curriculum Development; Education Philosophy; Juridical Foundation; Learning Theory; 2013 Curriculum

Abstract

This article examines the intellectual and organizational transformation of Muhammadiyah from Islamic puritanism toward Islamic cosmopolitanism within the framework of contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia. Historically, Muhammadiyah emerged as a reformist movement (tajdid) emphasizing the purification of Islamic beliefs and practices through strict adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, in recent decades, Muhammadiyah has increasingly articulated a cosmopolitan orientation characterized by openness to religious and cultural pluralism, interfaith dialogue, and active engagement in global humanitarian issues. This study employs a descriptive-analytical literature review method, drawing on classical and contemporary scholarly works on Muhammadiyah, Islamic reformism, and Islamic cosmopolitanism. The findings indicate that the shift from puritanism to cosmopolitanism is driven by internal intellectual dynamics, the expansion of modern education and scientific discourse, as well as external factors such as globalization, democratic transformation, and societal pluralism. Empirical examples from the literature demonstrate how the concept of Islam Berkemajuan has been institutionalized through Muhammadiyah’s involvement in education, healthcare, disaster relief, and interfaith cooperation at national and international levels. This transformation does not signify the abandonment of purificatory principles but rather reflects a reorientation of Islamic reform toward inclusivity, ethical universalism, and civilizational engagement. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah’s evolving synthesis of puritanism and cosmopolitanism represents a distinctive model of progressive Islam capable of contributing to both national cohesion and global humanitarian discourse. Keywords: Muhammadiyah, Islamic puritanism, Islamic cosmopolitanism, Progressive Islam, Islam Berkemajuan

Abstract

The culturalist and puritanical movements are two important currents in the dynamics of Islamic religious thought and practice. Culturalism emphasizes a dialogical approach between religious teachings and local socio-cultural realities, while puritanism focuses on purifying religious teachings based on normative sources deemed authentic. The shift from culturalism to puritanism is a complex phenomenon that cannot be understood through a single discipline alone. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the basic concepts, historical background, characteristics, and socio-religious implications of this shift through a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing theological, sociological, anthropological, historical, political, and philosophical perspectives. This research employs qualitative methods with a literature review approach and descriptive-critical analysis. The results indicate that the shift from culturalism to puritanism is influenced by changes in religious understanding, social transformation, globalization, and the dynamics of authority and power within Muslim societies. This study emphasizes the importance of an integrative and contextual approach so that the dynamics of religiosity can develop moderately and constructively, avoiding tendencies toward extremism and cultural relativism.  Keywords: culturalism; puritanism; religious movements; Islam; multidisciplinary approach; contemporary Islam

Abstract

This study examines the construction of Muslim identity in Indonesian Islam by analyzing the historical and socioreligious dynamics between traditionalist and modernist Islamic orientations. The research employs a qualitative method with content analysis, drawing on classical and contemporary scholarly works, historical documents, and religious discourses related to Islamic movements in Indonesia. Data were analyzed through thematic and discourse analysis to identify patterns of religious authority, interpretation, and social practice. The findings indicate that traditionalist Islam in Indonesia is characterized by strong adherence to local traditions, Sufistic practices, Shafi‘i jurisprudence, and reliance on religious authority figures, particularly within rural communities. In contrast, modernist Islam emphasizes rational interpretation, scriptural purification (tajdid), rejection of blind taqlid, and the integration of Islamic values with modern education, social institutions, and organizational activism, as represented by movements such as Muhammadiyah, Persis, and Al-Irsyad. These orientations produce distinct yet interacting forms of Muslim identity shaped by historical experiences of colonialism, modernization, and global Islamic reformism. This study implies that the coexistence and contestation between traditionalist and modernist Islam constitute a foundational element of Indonesian Muslim identity. Understanding this dynamic contributes to the discourse on religious moderation, social transformation, and the sociology of Islam in plural societies.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the role of tests in formative and summative evaluation as key components of the Islamic Education learning process. Formative evaluation is carried out during the learning process to monitor students’ progress, provide feedback, and support teachers in adjusting instructional strategies so that learning objectives can be optimally achieved, whereas summative evaluation is conducted at the end of an instructional unit to assess overall learning outcomes and to serve as a basis for academic decision-making, such as graduation or promotion to the next grade. This study employed a literature review method through a theoretical examination of various relevant sources on formative evaluation, summative evaluation, and the use of tests in the context of Islamic Education. The findings indicate that formative and summative evaluation have complementary functions, whereby formative evaluation is oriented toward the learning process, while summative evaluation focuses on learning outcomes. The assessment techniques used also differ according to their respective purposes, including observation, discussion, and self-assessment in formative assessment, as well as written tests, portfolios, and projects in summative assessment. These findings affirm that the appropriate implementation of formative and summative evaluation can enhance the quality of learning, identify students’ strengths and weaknesses, and support more objective and sustainable instructional decision-making within the framework of Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze in depth Haedar Nashir's thoughts on the concept of Progressive Islam and its relevance to strengthening the Muhammadiyah movement and reforming Islamic education in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The research data is sourced from Haedar Nashir's primary works discussing Progressive Islam and Muhammadiyah, as well as secondary sources in the form of scientific journal articles, academic books, previous research results, and official Muhammadiyah documents. Data analysis was conducted using thematic content analysis techniques by classifying the data into main themes, such as the definition of Progressive Islam, its theological and philosophical foundations, basic principles, and its implementation in the Muhammadiyah movement, particularly in the field of education. The results of the study show that Progressive Islam in Haedar Nashir's perspective is a comprehensive and visionary Islamic paradigm, which positions Islam as a moral, intellectual, and social force in building a modern civilization. This concept not only functions as a theological framework, but also as an ideological and strategic foundation for Muhammadiyah in responding to global dynamics, technological disruption, and contemporary humanitarian challenges. In the context of Islamic education, Progressive Islam implies strengthening the integration between religious knowledge and modern science, transforming the orientation of education towards the formation of people who are faithful, knowledgeable, and have superior personalities, as well as developing an adaptive, inclusive, and civilized education system. Thus, Haedar Nashir's thoughts on Progressive Islam contribute significantly to the renewal of Islamic education and the strengthening of Muhammadiyah's role in the development of a just, progressive, and sustainable Indonesian civilization.

Abstract
