Abstract

Gum benzoin (Styrax benzoin) is one of nontimber forest product classified into the resin group. The aim of the study was to determine the component from gum benzoin as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. Indonesian gum benzoin was obtained from North Sumatra and has antibacterial activity against S. aureus with the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentrationo) values of its ethyl acetic extract of 1.00 mg/mL and 2.00 mg/mL, respectively. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used in purification of ethyl acetate extract of the gum benzoin. The active component was detected by TLC contact bioautography. The bands with Rf of 0.21, 0.77, and 0.87 had growth inhibition activity to the S. aureus. The active antibacterial band with Rf of 0.21 was isolated and it could be an alkaloid component.

Abstract

Plants produce primary and secondary metabolite compounds depending on their growth conditions. The tea plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze that hosts Loranthus produces different metabolites compared to those not hosting. This study aims to determine the change in the thin layer chromatography pattern (TLC) of leaf and stem tea extract that is the host 3 types of Loranthus tea namely Loranthus atropurpureus, Loranthus cochinchinensis, and Loranthus pentandrus. Leaf and stem tea extracts that host 3 types of Loranthus were separated using TLC with stationary phase of silica gel 60 F254 and the mobile phase of DCM: MeOH: n-hex (48:1:1). Separation results was detected using UV lamps 254 and 366 nm. The changes of the band's area of each extract were determined using software ImageJ. The results showed a change in TLC patterns. The declining band's area was found in bands detected at 366 nm for the host's stem and tea leaves. The increasing band's areawere found on bands detected at 254 nm especially on tea leaves that host. In conclusion, the change in TLC pattern can be used to determine the compounds that change due to tea plants to host and can be alternative utilization.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is an acute inflammation of the upper or lower respiratory tract caused by bacterial, viral, fungal and other parasitic infections. Lemon peels have been reported to contain beneficial compounds such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Flavonoids have been reported to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anticancer activities. The review was conducted to select the orange peel from the best type of orange that can be used as an inhaler for people with ARI. National and international journals were selected based on the keywords citrus peel, antibacterial and antiviral. The chemical components reported in the essential oils of various citrus peels were determined and correlated with their related activity as antibacterial and antiviral. This systematic review shows that compounds that have the potential as antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral are flavonoids and limonina, these compounds are widely contained in the essential oil of lemon peel. The conclusion of the review shows that lemon peel essential oil has the potential as a raw material for anti-ARI drugs.

Abstract

Sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack) leaves are empirically used for various treatments, and their efficacy can be enhanced using nanoparticle technology, especially nanoemulsions. The purpose was to find the best nanoemulsion formula (NES) containing sungkai leaf extract (EDS). Sungkai leaves were extracted with 70% ethanol, and the compounds were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. NES was formed by mixing EDS (260, 400, and 530 mg), VCO, tween80, PEG400, soy lecithin, sodium alginate, and deionized water. The NES formed were characterized by particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, pH, viscosity, percent transmittance, and physical stability test. The results showed that EDS contains at least seven compounds, with eupatilin as a dominant compound. The characterization results obtained NES with a particle size range of 270–520 nm with a PDI value of 0.413–0.608. NES was categorized as stable with a zeta potential value of -45.9 to -48.7 mV and no phase separation based on the centrifugation test. NES has a viscosity of about 1.90–2.03 cP, pH 7, and a percent transmittance of 93–98%. The best formula is the formula with EDS F1 (260 mg). Thus, NES has the potential for the development of multiple treatment targets.

Abstract

The appearance of brown spots and wrinkles can be a sign of aging which can increase the risk of cancer. Compounds in broadleaf mahogany seeds (Swietenia macrophylla) contains many compounds and is known to have anticancer activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the compounds in the seeds of these plants have the potential to antiaging by analyzing their molecular docking interaction on the MMP-1 enzyme (matrix metalloproteinase), NEP (neprilysin), PPO3 (polyphenol oxidase), and as a support for the search for anticancer compounds. Two compounds that have the potential as strong inhibitors towards MMP-1 and PPO3 enzymes, namely β-cytostenone and 3β-hydroxystigmast-5-en-7-on which is a steroid group, as well as germacrena A and germacrena D which are terpenoids. Only compound 3β-hydroxystigmast-5-en-7-on which has the potential as a strong inhibitor of the NEP enzyme. All compounds have the potential to be strong inhibitors according to the Lipinski rule. Only compounds which binds to the PPO3 enzyme which has better activity than natural ligand based on ΔG and Binding Site Similarity (BSS) values.
