Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of ethno-learning as a character education strategy through the integration of local Kacirebonan cultural values in government-based secondary schools in Cirebon City. Using a multi-site ethnographic approach, this study was conducted for one year in four schools that actively develop culture-based learning. The results of the study indicate that ethno-learning is implemented in two main forms, namely through the integration of local culture in intracurricular subjects and through extracurricular activities such as mask dance, gamelan, rebana, and the "Jelajah Budaya" program. One important finding is the role of teachers as cultural mediators who bridge traditional values with the formal education process. Teachers not only act as teachers, but also as value facilitators, art trainers, and cultural preservation agents in schools. The implementation of ethno-learning has been proven to strengthen students' positive dispositions towards local culture, form humanistic social attitudes, and foster reflective cultural identities. This study concludes that culture-based education should not be a complement, but rather the main foundation in the formation of students' character in a contextual and sustainable manner

Abstract

This study examines the development of Civic Education learning in Indonesia in recent years, focusing on analyzing trends in academic publications related to this topic. Through a literature study approach, data was collected from 200 relevant articles drawn from journals, proceedings, theses, and other documents obtained through observation and analysis of documents using the Publish or Perish and Scopus Premium applications. The study's findings show an increase in the number of publications by 2024, reflecting the growing interest in the importance of Civic Education in the context of democratization and diversity in Indonesia. Despite fluctuations, Indonesia shows rapid research growth, although it still lags behind countries with stronger academic traditions, such as the United States and China. Civic Education learning in Indonesia is shifting towards a more transformative and inclusive approach, emphasizing social and contextual relevance. This approach prepares the younger generation to participate actively in democratic life. Therefore, it is essential for Civic Education learning in Indonesia to continue to be adapted to local social and cultural needs to form critical, caring, and responsible citizens. This research contributes to understanding the development of Civic Education in Indonesia. It serves as a reference for developing a curriculum more adaptive to socio-cultural dynamics

Abstract

Publications on character education have become increasingly prevalent over the last ten years. However, there aren't many studies on the relationship between local wisdom, social capital, and character education. This article is sourced from research that explores the practice of badingsanakan, which is deeply embedded in the culture of the Banjar community. This paper aims to analyze the values in badingsanakan as a form of social capital that plays a role in character education. Using a qualitative approach to transcendental phenomenology, data was collected through in-depth interviews and participatory observations. The primary data source consisted of eight informants from various age, gender, and professional backgrounds. The results of the analysis revealed five main themes: empathy and solidarity, trust and openness, social responsibility, value learning, and strengthening social and cultural identity. These five elements are constructive social capital in the development of character education. The practice of badingsanakan reflects deeply rooted cultural values in social relations and serves as an authentic and contextually grounded approach to character formation. These findings recommend the integration of fraternal cultural values into character education strategies in both formal and non-formal settings to build a more meaningful and community-based education.
