Abstract

This research is motivated by the insufficient oral English proficiency of educators and educational staff at SMP Kr. MDC Surabaya which is attributed to embarrassment and fear of making mistakes, the perception that English is difficult, and the previous English training ineffectiveness. This research aims to show that the use of eclectic methods and mentoring can enhance the oral English proficiency of educators and educational staff at that school. The eclectic method used in this research combined the behaviorist, cognitive, and constructivist theories. Additionally, to support these three theories, the researcher employed Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Language Learning. The researcher also incorporated mentoring to enhance the motivation and confidence of the subjects. This research utilized the School Action Research (SAR) method following the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The study was conducted over two cycles. The analysis results comparing the research subjects’ scores on the Initial Data Assessment Rubric, End of Cycle 1 and 2 Results demonstrate an improvement in the scores of the research subjects in which the score for Subject DE increased from 40 to 60, Subject NS increased from 40 to 63, Subject FK increased from 70 to 83, and Subject YF increased from 53 to 73. This indicates that the eclectic method and mentoring were effective in enhancing the scores of all four research subjects.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of Facebook social media on the social relationships of teenagers in Makassar City, along with the government's endeavors to mitigate the adverse effects of Facebook usage in this demographic. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes various data collection methods, including in-depth interviews with teenagers aged 18-22, discussions with the City's Communication and Information Office (Diskominfo), observation of teenage Facebook users, and document analysis related to the study's focus. The research findings undergo thorough analysis through stages of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that Facebook usage has both positive and negative impacts on teenagers in Makassar City. Positively, the platform facilitates the establishment and regulation of friendships, promoting positive communication through content sharing and constructive comments. Conversely, negative consequences arise as users feel offended by statuses, comments, and uploaded media touching on personal matters. Moreover, these negative impacts extend to teenagers displaying apathy towards social relationships, leading to procrastination and forgetfulness. Teenagers in Makassar predominantly use Facebook for gaming, entertainment, watching, and online selling. The government, as a key policymaker, encounters challenges in significantly minimizing the negative effects of Facebook usage among teenagers due to privacy concerns. Current governmental initiatives are confined to socialization campaigns and encouraging responsible and positive social media use among teenagers. Despite these efforts, more attention is required to effectively address the identified negative impacts.

Abstract

Abstract

Tensions between religious communities in a nation become one of the triggers of social conflicts that result in communal conflicts based on ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup. Communal conflict is a very crucial social issue because it can trigger a civil war that takes many victims. Communal conflict factors are generally preceded by social prejudice that makes a person or group of people deny the existence of equality and equal rights. Cases of social prejudice often arise more because of religious sentiment and sectarian politics, and or other identity politics. An understanding of religious moderation is a strong indicator for realizing social harmony in the life of pluralistic Indonesian society. Indonesia is a state of law that also embraces legal pluralism in certain legal rules. The level of understanding of religious moderation that is symmetrically related to legal pluralism becomes a problem in this paper. This research is based on quantitative research. Primary data is used to determine the level of understanding (perception) of religious moderation among religious leaders and officials in South Sumatra Province. Primary data were obtained through a questionnaire based on GoogleForm online. The focus and location of the research is Palembang City which represents the highest level of heterogeneity compared to other regions in South Sumatra Province. Based on data analysis, it was found that the level of understanding of religious moderation is very high, while the level of understanding of the manifestation of legal pluralism is below the level of high. It is recommended that there is a public policy in which there is a legal policy of the Regional Government through Regional Regulations to realize religious moderation by increasing public knowledge through religious moderation education and the ability to understand legal pluralism which is a necessity in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. For the Central Government, it can issue legal products in the form of laws or other regulations on religious moderation and legal pluralism.

Abstract

Abstract The policy of setting minimum wages within the current framework of wage protection still encounters many obstacles as a result of the non-availability of uniformity of wages, both regionally/provincially or districtly/municipally, and provincially or districtly/municipally sectorally, as well as nationally. In setting the minimum wage there are still differences based on the level of ability, nature and type of work in each company, the conditions are different, in each region. The problem in this paper is how legal sanctions are imposed on companies that pay wages below the minimum standard based on the concept of labor law. This study will use a normative juridical approach. The juridical (normative) approach is mainly aimed at obtaining theoretical matters, namely regarding legal sanctions for companies that pay employees wages below the minimum standard. The conclusion of this paper is the legal sanctions against companies that violate agreements the work is subject to civil law sanctions in which an agreement entered into by the parties in relation to a work agreement may not conflict with laws and regulations, namely in this case the Job Creation Law, PP Wages, and Ministerial Regulations/Decisions. Thus, promising wages below the minimum wage is null and void.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Determination of the right to wages for workers or laborers in Law no. 6 of 2023 concerning the Stipulation of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation into Law is determined on the basis of units of output and units of time. Wages are important because wages are the main goal for workers/laborers in carrying out their work. Therefore, the government is also involved in dealing with wage problems. Workers/laborers will work well if they get good wages, therefore, in order for workers to be more productive, there needs to be good wages, so the role of law is very important, namely ensuring protection, especially in terms of providing wages for workers. The research in this paper is normative juridical research. Normative legal research or normative juridical research is library legal research carried out by examining library materials or secondary data. The results of this discussion both support and criticize the government's efforts to establish wage policies as an effort to realize the rights of workers/laborers to a decent living for humanity and is involved in ensuring the provision of legal sanctions for entrepreneurs who violate the laws and regulations in employment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine if Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) affects the reading comprehension of grade ten students of SMK Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan. It used a quasi-experimental design with two groups called experimental and control groups, and involved 52 grade ten students as the samples. The paper-and-pencil method was used for data collection, with tests as the instrument. The pretest and posttest tests were administered to both groups. Data obtained from the tests were analyzed statistically to determine the sampled students’ reading comprehension before and after the treatment. The result showed that the reading comprehension of the experimental group improved significantly compared to the control one. Using a degree of freedom (df) of 50 and a significance level (ρ) of 0.05, it was found that the t-counted was 8.79, which was higher than the t-table of 1.677. Because the t-counted value was greater than the t-table value, the research hypothesis was accepted. Thus, using Collaborative Strategic Reading is effective for improving the reading comprehension of the sampled students of grade ten at SMK Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan.

Abstract

Developing communicative competence in under-resourced classrooms remains a persistent challenge for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. Grounded in Dual-Coding and Multimedia-Learning theories, this study investigated the impact of cue-card scaffolding on the speaking performance of Grade-8 students at a remote junior-high school in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design, 21 students completed a baseline oral test, participated in seven 80-minute lessons that progressed from image-only cards to situational grids, and sat for an equivalent post-test. Performances were rated with a four-category analytic rubric (fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation) by two trained raters (α = .89; r = .91). Mean scores improved from 46.14 to 59.14, yielding a mean gain of 13 points and a large practical effect (Cohen’s d = 1.40). A paired-samples t test showed the improvement was statistically significant (t = 9.92, df = 20, p < .001). Score dispersion narrowed, indicating benefits for both lower- and higher-proficiency learners. Classroom observations revealed increased lexical range and reduced hesitation, supporting theoretical claims that visual–verbal integration lowers cognitive load. The findings confirm cue cards as a cost-effective alternative to digital media for advancing oral proficiency in bandwidth-constrained contexts. Implications for lesson planning, teacher training, and equity-oriented language policy are discussed.
