Abstract

A good speech is a speech that is easily understood by the audience. To achieve it, cohesion should be built among the clauses in the speech. This study aims to analyze the realization of theme and thematic progression in the speeches of senior high school students at the Erlangga English Speech Contest 2021. A systemic functional discourse analysis approach was employed by focusing on textual metafunction. A YouTube video entitled ‘National Grand Final Erlangga English Speech Contest 2021 Senior High School’ became the research data. The video was transcribed into written form. Four speeches were randomly chosen and labeled SHS 1, SHS 2, SHS 3, and SHS 4. The result showed that all themes were realized in the speeches. Topical and textual themes became the dominant theme. In terms of thematic development, constant theme, and multiple/ split rhyme were freely realized. This indicates that the speakers can build cohesion among the clauses. However, empty themes and failed thematic progression were still found in the speeches.

Abstract

Era globalisasi yang semakin pesat membawa dampak yang kompleks pada sistem pendidikan di Indonesia. Dalam rangka mencetak generasi yang cakap dan mampu berkompetisi secara global, maka membekali anak dengan keterampilan bahasa Inggris merupakan hal yang krusial. Oleh karenanya, pengajaran bahasa Inggris bagi anak atau Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) penting untuk dilakukan. Sebuah pre-survey diberikan kepada 50 responden guru PAUD di kota Salatiga. Hasil survey menunjukkan 100% responden mengenalkan bahasa Inggris dalam pembelajaran di sekolah. Sebanyak 40% responden menyatakan bahwa pengajaran bahasa Inggris masuk dalam kurikulum inti yang terintegrasi dengan tema pembelajaran di PAUD. Adapun sebanyak 60% responden menyatakan bahwa pengajaran bahasa Inggris hanya dilakukan sebagai kegiatan ekstrakurikuler yang terjadwal secara periodic. Berdasarkan hasil pre-survey ditemukan 2 akar permasalahan, yakni pertama, sebagian besar guru bahasa Inggris di PAUD bukanlah berkualifikasi dari English Department. Hanya 14% responden guru PAUD yang lulusan English Department. Kedua, seluruh responden menyatakan belum pernah mengikuti pelatihan teknik pembelajaran bahasa Inggris interaktif sehingga kompetensi mengajar bahasa Inggris mereka sangat perlu ditingkatkan. Meninjau permasalahan tersebut, tim pengabdian UNNES mengadakan pelatihan bagi guru PAUD bertajuk “Peningkatan Kompetensi Mengajar Bahasa Inggris Guru-guru PAUD Salatiga melalui Pelatihan Pembelajaran dan Sumber Belajar Interaktif”. Kegiatan PKM ini terbagi menjadi 3 sesi. Sesi pertama merupakan ceramah dan diskusi teori pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk Anak Usia Dini, integrasi 6 lingkup perkembangan anak, strategi mengajar interaktif dan penggunaan media yang kreatif dan inovatif dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk Anak Usia Dini. Sesi kedua adalah praktik micro teaching bagi peserta pelatihan. Sesi ketiga adalah review dan feedback dari tim pengabdian.

Abstract

For EFL learners, fillers can easily be found in conversation, especially in a spontaneous situation. Mostly, EFL learners found difficulty in expressing their idea by words, so they produced a sound such as “ehm”, or repeated their words and sometimes containing pauses which are called fillers. Fillers can indicate that the interlocutor is not competent, but on the other hand, they can be used as a strategy to create conversation. Although fillers are categorized as strategic competence, they have several functions to make conversation smooth; overproducing will make it challenging for the interlocutor to catch the meaning. The research focuses on fillers and parts produced by an English class of senior high school students in Semarang. Research in senior high school is necessary because high school is the final level in the nine years of compulsory education launched in Indonesia. So, the output of high school graduates will represent the majority of the ability of Indonesian English skills. Researchers took the data in the classroom by pointing students randomly to answer some questions to investigate the use of fillers and to analyze their functions. The data was collected by using audio recording and transcribing. This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative study. Rose’s (1998) theory is used in this study to reveal the types of fillers. To analyze the fillers function that students used, researchers will use the theory from Stenstrom (1994). The expected result of this research is that this can be an analytical material for educators in Indonesia to improve students’ abilities, especially in conversation.

Abstract

A journal article review is an academic writing that summarizes and assesses others’ research-based articles. For doctoral students, reviewing a journal article is usually to train them for building their argument and broadening their knowledge of an issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of article reviews written in English by one class consisting of twelve Indonesian EFL doctoral students in their first semester at a university in Semarang, Indonesia. Twelve reviews written by the students were collected. The evaluation of their writings is based on Systemic Functional Grammar, particularly the interpersonal metafunction analysis, that is, the analysis of generic structure and appraisal. Therefore, this study employs textual analyses. The analysis of generic structure refers to the template from the Writing Centre of Thompson Rivers University, and the analysis of appraisal follows Martin and White’s appraisal system (2005). The discussion of this article explains the generic structure and lexico-grammatical realizations of evaluative stances used by the students. The findings indicate that not all doctoral students can organize their review following the generic structure and optimize the use of appraisal items. This exploratory investigation provides some pedagogical implications for the teaching of academic writings in EFL contexts.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the English presentation self-efficacy of ESP undergraduate students through a longitudinal-experimental research design. Rooted in Bandura's social cognitive theory, it addresses two research problems: how Indonesian ESP undergraduate students' English presentation self-efficacy developed when they were exposed to mastery experience in the form of presentation tasks, and how individual and group presentation tasks affected the English presentation self-efficacy development. Three groups of ESP undergraduate students (n = 107) taking ESP English for Management were purposively selected as the participants for the study. Each group was exposed to one of the three forms of interventions: individual presentation tasks, homogeneous-group presentation tasks, and heterogeneous-group presentation tasks. A Likert-type presentation self-efficacy questionnaire validated by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was utilized to collect the data in Weeks 3, 8, 12, and 16 of the semester. The study found that the Indonesian ESP undergraduate students' English presentation self-efficacy developed significantly as they completed the presentation tasks. The homogeneous-group presentation task outperformed both the heterogeneous-group and individual presentation tasks in enhancing English presentation self-efficacy. Implications for the teaching practices, study limitations, and future research recommendations are presented.

Abstract

Following the mandatory adoption of project-based learning (PjBL) in Indonesian vocational education, there has been a revival in popularity as a prevalent instructional approach in higher education. However, no research on students' attitudes toward mandatory PjBL in Indonesia has raised concerns about its acceptance. This article describes Indonesian vocational college students’ attitudes toward PjBL in English language courses. The study specifically focuses on cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes and how students perceive the advantages of PjBL for their English skills and career aspirations. This quantitative study included 336 Indonesian vocational students from twelve state and private colleges in Indonesia. The results of this study revealed that students had a positive attitude toward PjBL in their English courses. Students’ cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes indirectly influenced their career aspirations, with English skill benefits acting as mediators. This study proves that how students feel, think, and behave affects their future career goals by shaping how they perceive improvement in their English language skills.

Abstract

Numeracy is essential for students to achieve academic success and develop practical problem-solving abilities in their daily lives. This study aims to investigate the integration of numeracy into the teaching practices of different lessons by elementary school and kindergarten teachers in Semarang, Indonesia. The data of this qualitative research were acquired from 26 teachers using a qualitative technique, which involved an open-ended questionnaire and the analysis of lesson plans. The result of the study shows that only two of the four components of numeracy were known by the teachers. Domain I, which pertains to quantitative information, is the most prominent. Still, Domain II, which relates to spatial information, and Domain IV, which encompasses strategies, techniques, and tools, are noticeably lacking. The study emphasizes the need to provide well-rounded teacher training that covers all aspects of numeracy in order to improve the quality of numeracy instruction. The implications indicate the need for specific professional development programs to solve these gaps, thereby enhancing students’ numeracy skills and academic achievement. Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between student-teacher interaction, students' academic motivation, and the teacher's motivation in the eighth-grade English classroom.   Quantitative and qualitative data on student-teacher interaction and academic motivation in English learning were collected using a questionnaire, observation, and interview.   137 eighth-grade students at Semarang's Karangturi junior high school in the academic year 2022-2023 were the subjects of this study.  Using an observation sheet from Ottevanger (2001), it was determined to see to what extent the teacher uses student-teacher interaction to increase students' and teachers' academic motivation. A final interview is conducted with the English teacher to determine her perception of student-teacher interaction. The results demonstrate a correlation between student-teacher interaction and students’ academic motivation in English classes. The instructor utilizes these interactions by posing questions and issuing directives. Moreover, the instructor concurred that student-teacher interactions are highly beneficial for both students and instructors.

Abstract

English language skills in bilingual schools are critical. Teachers must teach students and help them communicate orally and in writing. This phenomenon is also seen in SD Tahfizhul Quran As-Sukarti Salatiga. Teachers must have good English communication skills since the school cooperates with NGOs from abroad. Currently, the number of human resources proficient in English is limited because only two teachers are proficient, and the others are not. The ability of teachers who can speak English varies, with most non-English teachers wanting to learn but lacking the confidence to speak. Although the school holds English courses every day, the lack of teachers' ability to communicate actively is still an issue. Two main problems were found from observations and interviews: the communication skills needed to support the bilingual classroom program and the lack of communication training for teachers. To overcome the problems at SD Tahfizul Quran As-Sukarti Salatiga, the service team created a program to improve real-life daily English communication skills for teachers at the school. The methods used in this training are lecture and discussion, practice, and role-play. Based on observations and questionnaires distributed after the training activities, teachers gave positive responses. They said this English training activity is essential for teachers to improve their competence and confidence. They also hoped there would be a sustainable program such as training that focuses on adding listening, speaking, and vocabulary skills.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of ProWritingAid, an AI-driven writing tool, on improving writing accuracy and increasing confidence among vocational high school students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia. The study examines the difficulties vocational students encounter in creating coherent and grammatically precise argumentation writings, highlighting the necessity for efficient technology assistance in their writing advancement. A qualitative case study methodology was employed to gather data using semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis involving 21 eleventh-grade students at SMK Al-Washliyah Sukra. Thematic analysis utilizing NVivo software was conducted to discern major trends in students' motivation, confidence, and challenges encountered while using ProWritingAid. The results indicate that ProWritingAid markedly improves students' motivation and self-assurance by delivering prompt, constructive feedback on grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, together with progress monitoring that cultivates a sense of accomplishment. Challenges include restricted access to premium capabilities, the intricacy of advanced ideas, internet connectivity problems, and device limits were recognized as impediments to optimal tool utilization. Notwithstanding these challenges, the tool significantly enhanced writing precision, assisting students in generating clearer and more logical arguing compositions. The study emphasizes the significance of including AI writing tools as supplementary resources in vocational education, while warning against excessive reliance and highlighting the necessity for instructional oversight. The study's limitations encompass its brief duration, cultural distinctiveness, and dependence on a singular version of the tool, potentially impacting generalizability. Subsequent study ought to investigate longitudinal impacts, cross-cultural relevance, and the incorporation of new AI technologies to enhance writing education in vocational EFL settings.
